Must have lenses

Cinevised Nikon Primes:

All of my Canon L glass whenever Birger decides to put out a mount.

The Howitzer, aka 50-300mm Nikon AIS of course:

And I just got a screaming deal on a Red Pro Zoom 17-50mm and a 50-150mm, so as soon as I get my Hot Rod PL mount I will be in business with those.

Where did you get those nikons cinevized?

Thanks

Wow... I love how they do those "Cinevised Nikon Primes". (Green with envy)

I have a great set and range of Nikkors standards but am seriously considering selling them and getting me a set ASAP.

Any chance of a comparative screen grab from each in your set?

Don't have screen grabs of each one to compare, but here are a few from a RED shoot I used them on:

So if they are good enough in 4k, I'm pretty sure they be fine in 1080p.

Thanx. Those shots look great. (and excellent framing BTW)

Will be testing my Nikkors next week hopefully... and maybe prepping them up for sale so I can get some cinevised ones.

It really is painfull using stills lenses for film work!

I have a set of contax zeiss. 28/2.0, 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 100/2.0 + tokina 11-16

After seeing all the footage, I think a great set of lens would be some vintage low contrast primes to help with specular roll off and the digitality of the camera. Maybe some old russian LOMOs or a set of Canon FD's or Olympus OM lenses.

New Zeiss lens is too contrasty for my taste.

Interesting perspective. Glad to hear that someone else even recognises and notes that lenses have different contrast.

I have always liked the contrast in a quality lens and how it brings apparent sharpness and quality to the image.

The contrast is because of the "purity" of the glass and the design of the elements.

I would prefer to have a contrasty lens and then adjust for it in my lighting. This is preferable and easier for me to do rather than the other way around ie using more contrasty lighting to correct a flat lens look.

Just curious, what do they change on the nikon lenses when they cinevize them? I am not familiar with the company, but would love to find more about the advantages.

Thanks!

I'm still pissed I let a set of 6 LOMO's get bought out from under me on ebay last month! And to think i was fretting over weather they were worth $2800! Guess i'll never know!

What are your thoughts between the Nikon and zeiss ZF cinemized set? Do you think the zeiss would be worth the extra cash to get? Would i realistically see the price difference on the AF100?

I have seen and used both.

It really depends on your budget.

IMO the Zeiss, being newer, have better contrast and are built tighter, but I have had some of these Nikons since the 70s and they really look fantastic on the 100 and you can still pick up some nice ones for a song.

For those who own "cinevized" lenses...are they worth the extra money? They look pretty, but I'm just trying to determine if the extra cost is justified.

So would you think if i'm trying to get in at a decent cost with the AF100 the Nikon's would be a good idea? I'm really trying to get the most bang for my buck. I'm looking hard at these Nikon cinevised lenses and the Zeiss set too.

How can I do a search on older Nikon lenses, and know if they are the ones to use? And which adapter is necessary for those lenses?

You generally want nikon ai or ais lenses, typically if you type in nikon ai and the focal length and f-stop you're looking for you should be able to find exactly what you want. Here's what I have for nikons in case it helps you. 24mm f2.0, 35mm f1.4, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 2, 105mm 1.8, and 135 2.8. Those are all fairly fast lenses, but if you can get your hands on the 85 1.4 for cheap that would be one I would switch. I would try to get as fast as you can afford on the af-100 since to get very shallow dof (if you want it) you will need to be able to open up the lens. I got the voightlander adapter for mine, but here's one by novoflex and one by metabones as well, all of which work well.

Hope this helps
