Music Videos and Commercial for The Black Keys on Canon 7D

Dont take me the wrong way

but say the opening shot and the bench shot (fivth in) for starters have small amounts of shake

shake that obviously you have the competence and budget to avoid

I therefore assume it is there with intent

The second shot dolly along the fence the horizon is off

In my eye such makes the viewer aware of the camera operator as kind of part of the cast

as opposed to the way that big smooth dollies and steadicams have an impassionate unseen eye spying on a scene

ergo we know there is some there making a film

Thats what I meant by home video - maybe a poor choice of phrase - the camera and operator as sort of part of the cast

Not a bad look - I like it - but a look for sure

edit
As for Next Girl that even has the grade and flicker of a home movie camera (8mm from the 70s kinda look) the the composition, cutting, content, and client bely that simplicity, incedentaly the grade, flare and backlighting have are more of the insignia that I would call organic

Both are way cool - dont get me wrong on that one

i'm still gonna disagree that camera shake means home video... it's just a different style... bourne films, saving private ryan... shake... is just a style... not that this music video is in that vain at all, but just saying that i don't think shake = home video...

but you totally have the right to your opinion, so it's all good...

this is a good forum for discussion, but one problem i find with any film forum is approaching the discussion of some decisions when they weren't perhaps your own doing... i'll be honest, i would have preferred that dolly shot to be better and the shake not to be there, but i don't think it hinders the overall satisfaction of the video... and from your comments, i don't think you're inferring that, either... i enjoy handheld, and do a lot of handheld work... that particular shot got more shake than it should have, but does it make the operator a part of the cast? i don't think so, but apparently to you it does... to each his own... all good, buddy...

in regards to Next Girl... again, not home video... it has a vintage 16mm 70s vibe/look to it, though, for sure... but home video? i dunno man... i guess you just have some rad home videos...

Let me be clear

I think these works are excellent

I am interested in the creative decisions made in thier construction - and I think they are creative decisions not happenstance - I want to know more about those decisions so I can learn from them and am lucky to be on a board where people post such work :) no more no less

S

i appreciate it... and no worries... it's healthy to post opinions and ask questions... like i said above, it was a decision to have it be handheld, but would have preferred less shake... and sometimes shots just aren't perfect... i see quirks in my favorite work done by my favorite directors that are some of the best... it happens... you can see camera operators in reflections all the time among other imperfections... i dunno, speaking for myself, i like imperfections... but that's just me...

nonetheless, the main objective of those videos was to tell an entertaining engaging story and if that was achieved than i'm stoked, so thanks for digging them... and feel free to throw any more questions or comments at me, buddy... appreciate you watching it and investing the time to converse about it...

I think shake tends to go with someones POV, an unseen soldier in Ryan, an unseen news reporter in District 9 maybe

I guess its mainly moms making home videos who video kids in the playground - I certainly dont - thats kind of a reason for the camera to be there at all

Maybe the slider and sticks should have been binned completely

I think its the mismatch that interests me - maybe that makes it even cooler

The thing Im working on at the mo (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=216235) we have gone with one support method and look for each sequence going with handheld for the scenes that involve intoxication or violence - maybe thats cliche

The thing that really impresses me on these is the direction and control of multiple characters through the location and timeline - those are the elements that hang it all together over mere camera work

..and the videos are cool :)

Very Good work Chris. Tighten up was so cool. I think it took some big balls to shoot Next Girl. ha ha ha, without the band members. If was funny!

Some us t2i owners are new using different lens. I looked up the prices of the lens you used. All are out of my price range today. I see that they are inexpensive to rent. Can you explain to us rookies, why and when to use the wide, medium and telephoto lens?

awesome, great work. both are executed perfectly, especially the little kid one (getting it to look like they are realistically fighting two adults - wonderful), keep up the good work!

Thanks Kenny... glad ya dug the vids! Yeah they are totally inexpensive to rent and well worth doing so... Well when you use the wide lens you're obviously going to get more in the frame and it's easier to have more elements in focus where as the telephoto will create more shallow focus. Especially since they are so cheap it would be a great idea to just rent them for a weekend and shoot like crazy to familiarize yourself with them...

Thanks Adam! That was a really fun scene to shoot... stoked it played out well...

Chris of all the talk on filmmaking I have yet to on this site a detailed explanation of how, when and why to use different lens?

Ha ha ha, anyway you did a great job using them!

well poop... ha, sorry my brief moment of wisdom didn't suffice... ha... rent those suckers and start using them, and i'm sure there's some kickass dp's on here that could talk to you for days about lenses... thanks again for digging them, buddy!

Great videos Chris. Had fun watching them all...

right on... thanks, luis!

Both music videos are seriously awesome. That's so cool you are shooting videos for the Black Keys. The really dig the concept of the first one. Listening to the Black Keys the last thing I think I would ever think of is kids on a playground. Really creative! And the second one just had a really cool style and mood. Great color correction!

Keep up the good work!
