mpeg streamclip not recognizing avid codec

That's where Media Composer 5 comes in. Using Quicktime AMA you don't have to convert at all.

But even if you covert your footage to say DnxHD or pro rez - using AMA you wouldn't have to reconvert it to MXF. Just link to it and start editing.

While I am VERY much looking forward to MC5, it's performance using H.264 through AMA is yet to be proven. additionally, though you CAN edit via AMA, I would not recommend that long term. If you're in a hurry, then it's great. But I rest a LOT easier putting the footage into native format, inside the Avid database where it's:

1. Searchable
2. Backed up
3. Native

But that's just me.

I agree Perrone - but admittedly there are those times where it would be convenient to at least first view the footage, give it a proper name (and other meaningful metadata like scene and take) then let AVID do the conversion while you're off doing something else.

I saw it in action at NAB and was thoroughly impressed.

No doubt. When I watched what MC4 did with my EX1 SxS cards, I was floored. Fastest workflow I'd ever seen. And the ability to bring that into the database later, at my leisure, was incredibly convenient.

When you were at NAB, did they have a demo showing AMA access to 5D/7D files? If so, how was the preview speed inside Avid? Was the exceptional timeline performance still there or was it more laggy? And were they demoing on software only MC5 or were they using one of the boosting boxes.

premiere pro cs4 has full playback on ex1 mxf files also...it seems premiere just doesnt hold up to .mov files...

We aren't talking about playback performance of EX1 files. We are talking about getting those files into the timeline for editing.

They basically showed how MC5 easily accessed multiple file types like H.264, Red Native and Pro Rez. I couldn't get a real feel for timeline performance other than it was working along side pro rez and red files all on the same timeline. He even imported some DV footage to show how it did a realtime scaling (your choice between letterbox, center and something else).

He said he was using the Matrox box early in the demo sing MC5 supports it.

Very impressive stuff.

I hope so. I just got approval for purchase of MC5, Matrox Mini, and 8TB of RAID. Along with an HDMI monitor. Let's hope it works as advertised!
