I believe this is a customized template.

No shame in that. Looks fantastic...as does the short. I for one will be ordering.

Broken2005,
Just curious on the "content" of this short. I'm assuming it's full of language and violence. What would you consider it to be "rated" if you had to guess? Looks very cool, but is this something I want to watch with my wife, know what I'm sayin'!

Hey Joe,

We would concider BROKEN to be a strong PG-13. There is no language. An the action only has a few bloody scenes but other than that you should be cool!

Thanks,
Alex

Alex,

Your work is stunningly phenomenal! But that's old news for you. Great to see all the priceless publicity you are getting in magazines and on web sites.

In your upcoming Special Features DVD, in what level of detail do you describe your color correction? Do you show what kinds of SPECIFIC filters were used to create the different looks? You mentioned Magic Bullet and the FCP color corrector ... will you be showing us which MB and FCP filters were used to achieve the cc results you have done so well? Are there any other sites/links you would recommend on how to attain killer cc effects?

Also, which tripod and heads did you use for the DVX? Did you use a follow-focus system as well? Any other hardware to create the magic?

Thanks for creating a fantastic and inspiring piece.

The trailer was great but the scene in the storyboard comparison was even better, looks promising
This DVD sounds like a good learning material with all those special features, I was gonna buy it anyway, but now I can't wait...

I'm new to this site and just saw the trailer and have skimmed over the website. I have yet to lift my jaw off the ground. The quality of this trailer is amazing. I still cant' believe you used a DVX100A. I've seen film that doesn't look that good. Of course I understand you did a lot color correcting, but oh my god!!! I've done quite a bit of color correcting on FCP, but never got that creative and that good before. Whoa!

I'm saving up my pennies to buy the camera, but now I think I'll just give up my whole entire savings for it!. This trailer was truly inspiring (even though I'm interested in docs.).

Quick question. What type of mac did you use, given the intense and demanding work you did for the final output I was curious. Was it a Dual G5 or G4 and how much ram of memory.

thnx,

oh and by the way, I will be the first in line for a copy of the DVD! thank you for sharing your work.

I thought i'd throw in my two cents. Let me just add that I concur, they're real, and they're spectacular.

Can't wait for the DVD. I hope I can beat the rush. This thing looks like it will be really popular.

Great job.

i hope i don't rain on the love fest too much here...granted the filmmakers should be commended on technical effort and pr skills alone, but I still hold out giving this one the giant thums up everyone else seems quick to throw out until I have seen the final film in its entirety. it would be great for a low budget indie to succeed in the action genre, but it is really tough to sell an action scene with any kind of believibility. lots of quick in your face special effects, while great attention getters, have been used to hide many a turd in recent cinematic history. this trailor is good but not great. it doesnt seem as tight as it needs to be for me to think its possibly real or that any of it carries any weight. for some reason it reminds me of the flashy trailors for "saw". i remember seeing the trailors for "saw" and thinking - "wow lots of cool editing effects" (among other things) well in that movie most of those effects of a similar music video type and when it all came down to it they were annoying and hurt the film in (not that it was perfect otherwise). these filmmakers have proven themselves as an indie force visually, no doubt about it. i wish i knew how to do these effects. but i am curious if they can tell a story and use these skills in a believeable fashion. there are plenty of high gloss empty efforts in hollywood, i am hoping we dont have the same here. again sorry to be the only man not on the bandwagon yet but every thread i see around the internet about "broken" talks about the budget and number of effects shots, and not about much else which seems significatn to me. if nothing else you guys definitely have futures in music videos. when i see the movie i will post more.

LDP,

I think your comments are well thought out and you are right a great or impressive trailer does not equal a great movie. At least for me, and I would speculate for many more, what is astounding is the cinematography. These are what my comments were based on and given the interest of this forum I think many of us are excited about pushing the limits of what can be accomplished with a dvx. Completing a film with such equipment, budget, and doing all the post on a desktop is just amazing.

Lets say the film is not great or a complete bomb (in terms of story, acting, or whatever else), what was accomplished is still significant. Do they have a future in Hollywood if their film is bad? Well, look at what Lucas put together most recently. The screenplay was horrible and the acting was lazy and lacked talent in some parts (Anakin). Sure, Lucas has weight, leverage, and $ to pull it off. But lets face it, Hollywood does not produce quality films (for the most part).

I agree with your comments in terms of what has yet to be seen. But what is available (the trailer) is amazing, inspiring, and exicting for those of us who are interested in working with the dvx and desktop computers.

style WAY over substance?

style WAY over substance?

Obviously this team of professionals (Cregan & co. should be getting more praise), have serious vfx talent and more than the toted $8K in experience and facilities I would assume. They knew what to show in terms of a trailer as it's definitely working for most of us here.

But to me the trailer is too quick (besides titles, it's like 30-40 seconds of 100 or so shots  ) and in order to really get a feel for any of the imagery I had to advance the entire 2nd half frame by frame for my brain to even register what I was seeing. Seems to have some good shots in it, that's promising, but at less than a minute long I would argue you can show dozens of tenth of a second clips of anything (maybe even "pookie"s pics in the Cafe) to fast music and it can look decent.

The BROKEN trailer plays more as an effects reel than a movie...

Good:
The titles are killer! I would love to have someone pull together titles like this for me, good stuff! The effects on the girl sitting in the wheelchair look cool too. The girl with the red top and leathers looks badass and convincing. And the hulk dragging the body looks convincingly hulky and someone you dont want to mess with. Some shots have good composition and DOF, any of those 100 shots employed to get some of that DOF? Also good lighting in the assumingly dark location that was used.

Bad:
I don't particularly like the acting from what I can make out. The wheelchair girl seems fine but the guy who says "I look familiar" and "I love this part" as well as other voiceovers didn't do it for me. Doesn't seem scary or evil at all. The costumes look cheesy. I assume this isn't a comic book movie. But if it is, everyone except the SWAT guys look like they are a cartoon character. None of these action badasses really look very badass except for those mentioned above and since they don't speak I contribute that to their outfits.

I see this movie posted in every indie forum: "$8000 spent!....100 VFX shots!". So I have to 2nd the comment above about PR. Great job. I am not sure why those are even buzz words, but hey, whatever works.

A couple things I wanted to ask the filmmakers after reading over at IMDB.com (trying to find how much experience and people were involved as well as reviews on the finished film). A press post said the movie "hit Sundance". The film didn't make Sundance, did it? I tried finding reviews on your site and IMDB but everything I clicked on and read was a review on the trailer. Have any come in for the actual film yet?

Although the style of the trailer is unique and inspirational to DVXuser-made material I feel it's overdone in the MTV and Hollywood world and as a forum we still need to give some kind of critique on it. I need to see a 1-2 minute scene. An actual scene without all the hype and then I can say if this is something I would want on my shelf.

LDP-Llyons, I agree this film does looks amazing but its only a trailer. Lets wait and see. Its good that members like yourselves are open to frank discussion. Tech wise this film hits the spot...storywise...who knows???

From what I see it looks like great quality and creativity ....and a good effort to put together a film on a tight budget.....I'll take a copy when it's available.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the comments back and forth. It's cool to see people being critical of others work in a constructive way. Just for the record, we have over 50 reviews on IMDB.com and on our press page: http://www.whatisbroken.com/press.html of critics that have actually seen and reviewed the short.

Much of the press we have received is very surprising to both Jorge and I. We just wanted to put together a little short to show off our ideas and to show Hollywood that we could make a viable action/thiller with little or no $$$.

Also, BROKEN did hit Sundance (http://www.whatisbroken.com/sundance.html). We were there to promote the short, but we were not in the festival (didn't meet the deadline to submit). We did meet some producers in Sundance and we are developing BROKEN into a feature...wish us luck ; )

BTW, here is a link to the BROKEN DVD: The "BOOTLEG" Preview Trailer:

http://www.whatisbroken.com/broken_dvd.html

Let me know what you think. The DVD should be available in three weeks, according to the distributor. I wish you all the best of luck in the future with all your projects.

Cheers and thanks for ALL the support and kind words!

Alex,
Man the DVD looks killer, I will deff have to pick one up. Hey in fact I am going to be down in Miami mid Aug. and going to go hang with the Rhino crew. Maybe if you arent to busy we could get togethere. But Broken is killer (you should have heard Lennt and Alex at Rhino rave about it!) and It is very deserving of getting afeature version made. Big things for you my friend and much deserved.
