rur said:Did you shoot with normal 4:3 aspect ratio or did you guys use squeeze mode, or perhaps the 16:9 lense? Thanks.

BROKEN2005 said:We shot 4x3 and then letterboxed the image. It gave me freedom to recompose the shot in post. We go over it on the DVD
Thanks,
rur said:Sorry, so you put black bars (top and bottem)? Is that what you meant by letterboxed?
I must apologize I am not completely familiar with the DVX and in the process of buying one.
I ordered a DVD from you too, that should explain it. Thanks for your time and sharing your knowledge with myself and everyone.
rur said:So lastly,
They used the anamorphic lense, as well as letterboxing the image in post.
The final footage looked great. I realize the lighting while shooting as well as the image touch ups in post was a big factor in achieving the end result. I just need to know if I have to purchase the anamorphic adaptor as well to achieve the highest quality image I can with the DVX.
jdanstan said:No. They didn't use it.
You should searc the forum for "anamorphic" and /or "16X9", there are lots of threads that discuss the pro/cons of all the above, and that's not what this thread is for, especially since they didn't use it as they have said earlier in this thread.
Anamoprhic makes a 16X9 image.
Letter boxing creates a 16X9 image in a 4:3 frame.
If you use them together yuo get cinescope or 2.35:1 which is what epic hollywood films use.
No they didn't use the anamoprhic.
They shot 4:3 and letterboxed in post. They used a wide ANGLE lens often, which is different from wideSCREEN or a 16X9 adaptor. A wide angle lense just shows more of the image in the same aspect ratio.
Neither did "November" use the anamorphic, the film that won the cinematography award at sundance this year. You can see it on the big screen now if you are on either coast or in Texas.
But technically the anamorphic will give you 500 lines of resolutioon because it optically blows up the image before it gets to the chips so it uses all of the power of teh 3 CCD's. 4:3 is 500 lines I think, but any other widescreen solution gives you a total of 300 - 350 lines. Squeeze and uprezzing in post can damage the image some, though most say it is negligable. Letterboxing either in camera or in post does NOT "hurt" the image, however - along that shorter widescreen strip it will be the same quality as if you hadn't letterboxed, you are just throwing away the top and bottom 25% of the image. When you use the anamorphic, you get EXTRA resolution over the same area.
... but you can't use any other lense attachements and filter boxes for it are hard to find and expensive. But also the adaptor pust the horizontal and vertical planes at different points which means you can't get critical focus by eye and the camera won't focus at all aperture, distance, and zoom combinations. I did a test and a three shots that would have taken 15 minuts to shoot without the adaptor took over an hour.
Lots of great stuff is shot without the anamorphic.

The Deadlkidz use the anamorphic and it is quite clear.
The rest of the examples there includiung Broken do not.
