Mounting P2 via HPX 170 On an Intel/Mac

I realize that this topic has been covered to some extent elsewhere but the explanations and solutions provided do not seem to resolve my issue.

I am trying to mount a camera (HPX 170 w/latest firmware) installed P2 card on an 8 core intel/mac runnning OSX 10.5.8. I have followed the instructions in the manual, placed the camera into firewire mode as as well as PC mode but when I do so, rather than the "1394" message that should appear, the thumbnails show up on the viewfinder and the card does not mount to the desktop.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

once you see the thumbnails you have to hold down the button you just pressed and then you'll see the 1394 message and your computer will recognize the cards.

Thank you, tried that but apparently one has to release the button once the thumbnails appear and the press it again to enter PC mode. Must have missed that statement in the manual or... it wasn't there (so much for Japanese to English translations). Anyway, thanks again for your reply, it has been resolved.

in nearly 3 years i have NEVER once touched the write protect feature. and ive never had a lick of trouble...

Always write protect cards.

It's a small procedure, take less than a second, and prevents the Mac from write to the card. Others have reported this.

Some people have no issues, but I'm conservative on this.

Some people have indeed never had an issue. But others used to report glitches and other anomalies, and when they were told to write-protect their cards, the reports of glitches stopped coming in.

I liken it to cirrhosis of the liver... just because I have never, in my life, ever had it, doesn't stop me from recognizing that other folks certainly do get it, and so we recommend that everyone take appropriate preventative measures that seem to help. Write-protecting cards may be a placebo, or it may actually make a difference, but in the years of recommending it we've seen a marked drop in the number of reports of glitched file transfers, so I say it can't hurt and it might even help, so definitely do it.

You could have a problem without write-protecting if you ever mount a P2 card that's very full. Because if you don't write-protect, the OS may write a few invisible files as part of normal indexing when you mount the card. And if those files put the P2 card over capacity it may become unreadable. Again- low possibility but it happens and the one super simple easy way to prevent it 100% is the slide that little tab over before mounting the card.
