More Nikon D800 1080P video tests

New to thread

Hi,

I just discovered this thread. I am the cinematographer that posted his test on Youtube and got grief for not posting on Vimeo. I'm happy to post on Vimeo however it may not be necessary anymore because there are so many great codec comparison tests out there. My question to all is what is the advantage of posting on Vimeo if you can only upload an H.264 file? Am I missing something? What's the point of being able to download the file if it's not the original ProRes file? if there is a way to upload a ProRes file to Vimeo please instruct me and i will happily post my test. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Charles Schner

Card in or out

Card in or out

Hi,

I keep reading and seeing on posted videos that you need to remove the card from the D800 in order to get 1080p out of the HDMI. The claim is that you only get 1080i if a card is in the camera (even a Nikon rep said this in one NAB video). I have not found this to be the case with my camera. Of course if you record within the camera the HDMI drops down to 720 but I find no difference in output with a card in or out when recording externally. Anyone else find this to be the case? Thanks.

Charles

Hey Charles- Welcome! I'm the one who posted your clip in this thread when you put it up many weeks ago. Please put your test on vimeo with the girl in front of the test charts. If you can, make the 1080P so it can be downloaded for analysis too. I'll add your test/tests to the the opening front page too.

well this is something very cool i found in Nikonrumors , its more about the lens than the camera - D800 but still very cool , have a look

Here's another D800E from that same guy 'atmikes'. Using just the lens I want to get, so this is actually a great test for my needs (Landscape, HDR, Filmmaking):

Moire is quite visible on some shots...

<Moire is quite visible on some shots> I am good friends with my Nikon Rep and Member Of NPS. My reps biggest fear is that someone would order the E to do video, so much in fact that in his district he called everyone that ordered an E and tried to talk them out of it. It is made for landscape still photography NOT anything that will show Moire: shutters, bricks, tweed, silk fabric: especially not for video. P Bloom article says the same thing. The D800 is not moire free but the E is very prone towards it and Nikon has said as much. In my experence it..the plain jane 800..has about the same as my hacked GH2 and Canon XH A1.

Just got some footage with my new D800.

Neutral
-2 sharpening
-1 contrast
-1 saturation

I'm pretty impressed

For Video the D800E and D800 will produce the same results due to how it downsamples to 1080. I have the 800E and for stills I haven't run into moire yet. In fact for stills, neither have most other folks.
