The Nikon D800 Camera Info & Footage Tests

THE NIKON D800
Filmmakers, multimedia professionals and event photographers—record Full HD 1080p at 30/25/24p or 720p at 60/50p in AVC format. Produce to your exacting vision when working in manual mode, controlling aperture, ISO, AF and shutter speed. Record uncompressed files via HDMI to an external recording device. via HDMI. Widen production perspective using either Nikon FX or DX lens formats at Full HD 1080p and 16:9 aspect ratio. Attach headphones and check audio levels or monitor input via peak audio meters as displayed on the camera's LCD monitor. Microphone sensitivity can be adjusted in up to 20 steps. Remotely start and stop video. Simultaneous Live View on the camera's LCD monitor and external monitor during recording are possible.

Nikon FX-format CMOS Sensor with 36.3 Effective Megapixels
The D800 renders levels of texture, nuance and detail to your photography that, until now, have been the exclusive domain
of the complicated medium-format system. Define every eyelash, every line in tree bark, and every shimmer of light.
Savor the exceptional depth in your still images — with the astounding 36.3 effective megapixels, you can. Enlarge them
as big as A1 poster-sized prints (59.4 x 84.1 cm/23.4 x 33.1 in.) at 200 dpi, or crop aggressively to reach the composition you
desire, all without sacrificing the detail and tonal range of the original. In order to maintain clean, high-resolution images,
14-bit A/D conversion within the sensor and a high signal-to-noise ratio deliver phenomenal images in a diverse array of
situations. The image sensor’s incredible potential does not stop with photography, either. For cinematographers ready to
put their exceptionally sharp NIKKOR lenses into action, the D800’s 36.3 effective megapixel data is efficiently processed
for exquisite 1080p broadcast quality video at 30p.

NikonD800-PappasArts-MichaelPappas.jpg

14-bit A/D conversion and 16-bit image processing for rich tones and natural colors
Tonal gradation is where an image transforms from simply representing life to taking on a life of its own. The D800 does
exactly that, with cutting-edge image processing that injects vital energy into your images. Black is rendered as pitch
black, and shadow details are subtle and rich. Even under harsh, high-contrast light, where some cameras can fail, the
D800’s gradation remains smooth with abundant detail and tone all the way up the scale to pure white.

View simultaneous live view output on external monitors and record uncompressed video via HDMI
During movie shooting, you can now simultaneously check videos on an external monitor* using an HDMI connection,
in addition to the camera’s TFT monitor. And for those who need the purest video output for professional quality editing,
you can now record uncompressed movie live view footage directly to an external storage device via HDMI interface.

I did a really basic color correction- here's a frame grab. The D800 files grade well.

Here's a split screen of two resolution charts posted from two different people of the 5D Mark III and the Nikon D800. It's absolutely not scientific, so until these cameras can get in good testing situations, take it for what it is.

So far it looks like a very gradable image coming for the Nikon D800. I'll check out the video you linked to. Agreed, it's best to turn all those profiles to the lowest settings so there not baked in- should improve aliasing as well. I'd like to see more of that too.

Did you see this video : https://vimeo.com/39274584
The telephoto shots in this footage on most DSLR's would have a lot of rolling shutter, however the d800 exhibits very minimum compared.

I was curious how the D800's codec handled in the shadows- whether it got blocky and noisy. This frame grab was from the 640iso footage.

Here's a Nikon D800 video with fabrics. Not much aliasing at all in these. No download for this video. Looks go though.

This was a screen capture from the Vimeo of one of the fabric shots in the footage.

Some nice new footage from vimeo. http://vimeo.com/39475988

Here the in camera sharpness is dialed way down, and I personally prefer this look. Looks like it helps with the aliasing as well.

Long lens shots on DSLR's can be risky, however the rolling shutter is really under control on the D800. Aliasing and Moire look under control. Reduction in detail is a must no matter what.

A comparison of the internal H2.64 codec to recording externally to ProRes422 and ProRes 422 LT. Be sure to switch quality to 1080P.

When I play this clip, notice very annoying artifacts in black screen below cyan colour square, with all 3 sections of the clip. Is this the doing of Youtube, or is this in the original source material?

Hi Bob, yeah I saw that. It's youtube compression. The cinematographer who shot this posted his findings on a private list for DP's along with this public youtube. He said that the HDMI looked amazing, and the internal codec was very good. I'm going to ask him if he might consider uploading to Vimeo and post his findings along with it. Since it's a private list, I can't post his findings. However there all positive, as it's no surprise with many of the videos that have already showed this past week its showing the D800 is performing quite well.

Okay. Memo to self:

Youtube videos are absolutely useless for evaluating or comparing video image quality, excepting outrageously horrific problems for which even youtube compression cannot be blamed.

Youtube is useless for comparison. Vimeo is with download original is the way to go.

Wow, great find! Thanks for posting that.

Youtube is useless for comparison. Vimeo is with download original is the way to go.
Then why do we see so many links to youtube videos for "test" clips posted in these forums?
And why do we bother commenting on youtube-posted clips?

YEs. fabulous test and to concur with you and bob, YouTube either mangled the file or the compression on the author's side was not optimized. In general, I find vimeo to be far sweeter CODEC and have a compressor droplet that is my 'go to' for empirical comparisons. So yes, Vimeo and or full res file for download from a host would be grand. My takeaway (looking at on a Macbook ) is they all three looked just fine and almost equal though the internal codec was noticeably less gutsy than either flavor of ProRes.

Bob? Who Knows? Why did millions of sheeples flock to AOL even after it stopped being relevant? Force of habit and lack of better information. From YouTube/Google's point of view it's, we could give a damn as long as the volume stays up where we want it.
