More Nikon D800 1080P video tests

Nikon first time at nab. That is interesting because it shows that they are interested in video. The d800 that I am getting is a good product, with the mosaic filter perhaps a great one. But with the advent of the blackmagic cine cam it is not going to get a lot of momentum I think. Unfortunately they did not go more aggressive. They should have been disruptive. The no moire/aliasing in a 36 megapixel camera would always be difficult but why for example not simple things like 10 bit hdmi out, a true log output with such a high DR sensor camera? The DR seems nice and the 8 bit image nice also, but these two thing would have put it in another league.

The reshot fstoppers (test) subject matter hardly stresses the camera's codec. I suspect there will be more gained with the Ninja than is given credit for in these types of tests.

100% agreed, and the fstoppers folks have already heard such comments. A thorough codec test takes a great deal of effort, and I think they (fstoppers) have already spent much more time on these videos than they originally anticipated and were originally willing to donate to the video community. I don't expect any followups to this subject from fstoppers in the near future.

What they have provided is, simply, a verification that the D800 codec and Ninja (using ProRes) can provide similar results with (mostly) static subjects.

They have provided screen grabs, have anybody downloaded them and see some channel etc. For me rapishare is going slow slow... like 9 hours to download 27 megabyte!!!!

found a serious comparison with d800 and d4 in

Thanks t.p.! The D800 is doing a great job here compared with the 5D III and D4. Can see a couple of issues you will need to be aware of with the D800, but overall I am so glad I have a D800 in order and not to far away either.

actually in my view d4 shines in this test the d800 shows unacceptable noise
but i guess every man with his view and conclusions
here is another two tests ive found with the d800 :

You misunderstand me! I meant that it compares well, given that it is standing against a camera that is almost twice it's price. I don't think that anyone would believe that a D800 is on the same level as a D4. But I'm impressed with the overall quality of the D800. Appreciate the links though

Re video mode, the D800 seems well past the D4 from what I've seen. Very impressive with the external recorder.

one thing they didn't look at was CX vs. FX on the D4. As long as you're using ISO 3200 and below on CX I think it would be as sharp as D800 and just as clean. so I'm happy with D4 over the D800.

It certainly looks sharper on the D800, but I can see moire on the stockings. In fact all except the D4 show some, but very hard to workout whether it is from compression for vimeo/YouTube or not. You mention external recorder. How are you capturing the HDMI output, uncompressed or Avid DNxHD/ProRes and what recorder.

Allow me to say this, the video quality does not seem to be great at all. It is mediocre at best. I only wanted to provide you a quick reference to compare to, below is a still image taken with a 250 dollar Lumix GF1 and a 60 dollar Minolta MC 35 mm lens and the image scaled down to HD size and saved as 8-bit image:

If the image started moving, that is how HD video should look like this year. There are few excuses for much less definition these days. Link to HD size image: http://www.fourseasonshd.com/blueLightRaw2.png

In 2008 this video quality would have competed with Canon HV30 HDV camera, but in 2009 Lumix GH1 full HD would have blown these cameras out of the water. This is absurd. Demand a good quality video from Nikon. These are not meant to be cheap hobby cameras.

i completely disagree but i wont go into this argument again , ill just say ( sharpness is not the only measure for high quality video )

anyhow here is another D4 video
