Monsters the Movie

I remember reading that there wasn't a script at all, actually. Just an idea, some great opportunities for locations and know-how.

Which is more than what half of what Hollywood puts out with an actual screenplay, imo.

LoL Gottshalk. In defense of the Hollywood Machine, they do the best they can with what they have. After spending the last six or more months trying to really do this thing, I've re-evaluated my outlook on "the system" and how things work.

Making a movie that people want to pay to see is no easy task. With several hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line, that money needs to be insured... the safest way to insure it would be conventions and names.

Business is business.

MONSTERS is actually right in line with those conventions, hence why it's been a monetary success.

Gareth Edwards just got pinned as the director for the New Godzilla remake.

Now that's success!

Not sure how I feel about this. Great for Gareth but, they already made Cloverfield, which I fear is the direction they will go. I don't want another film where Godzilla has no personality like the Emmerich version, or like the monster in Cloverfield. At that point it isn't Godzilla anymore.

Good thoughts. I must admit that I have no interest in a new Godzilla anything. Not unless it's a comedy, then I'm down. Haha.

I am very inspired to see Gareth immediately being inducted into the system, where he may be able to secure larger budgets to create great and refreshing content of his own. Say, after Godzilla.

This is concept art from the Lionsgate Godzilla. I think they learned a lot about what not to do from Emerich's movie and choosing Gareth Edwards also points in that direction. Monsters is about as far away from Independence Day as you can get with the same basic subgenre.

it'll be interesting to see how Gareth handles making a film in the studio system, especially something this big. I was speaking with an old work mate of his who said that Gareth has a hard time working with others and has always been a one-man band.

I would like to eventually work in the studio system. I wouldn't want to try and make some really unique personal film idea, or something slightly unconventional as it would probably get me fired so that they could butcher it to make it marketable. Unless I were to attain some clout like Cameron or Nolan got and wanted to do something that was unconventional and still needed a huge budget (Avatar and Inception both fit this mold).

A movie like Godzilla though, that would be a lot of fun I would imagine. It's not like I would go into a project like Godzilla and expect to rewrite cinema history.

I wouldn't mind working for studios either. Hopefully, they could even help me make my films more mainstream. That could be a good thing too.

I wished it did but it did not work for me !
I was expecting something better than Cloverfield ,maybe to high ?
and it look very videoish to me honestly .

Looking forward to Godzilla though !

Watched this for the first time this evening. I agree with some of the comments around the dialog. On occasions it worked well and felt natural, but there were some lines that curled the toes. What mostly annoyed me about the movie was the overdoing of wide aperture shots. Felt a bit like a lot of the clips we see on Vimeo etc where f/1.2 somehow equals cinematography. Quite distracting. Overall though, it was a good ride and was certainly a breath of fresh air compared to the usual Hollywood antiseptic perfectionism (think Transformers, and X other disaster movies). I'll look forward to seeing what else this guy comes up with.

Do you mean the heavy-handed DOF shots? Those were because of budget. They had no permits and so everyone in the background was always walking around stopping and staring at what was happening. Had they not taken extreme measures to blur the backgrounds (even going to post for some, I think), it would have looked pretty silly and would have been much more distracting than any aperture choice.

Ah, I wondered if there was some post blurring of the background in parts. Hopefully his next movie will have a bigger budget so he can control what's happening in the background a bit more :).
