Not sure what Genelecs are going for these days but they were always some of my favorites. KRK should have something for you. I have Tannoy near field monitors but haven't done any projects where I really need anything other than a good pair of headphones.

I use the K+H O110D (O110 does not have the digital in).

The Harbeth Monitor 20 are also excellent, but are passive only - these are excellent and very revealing, especially with speech.

Both these are BBC LS3/5a size (and these are also excellent but not quite as good as the above).

I have the JBL PRO LSR4328 that I'm very happy with. Love the computerized automatic room correction.

I second the recommendation for JBL. I have 4326 and love them. May want to go for 4326 + JBL sub if you want to really hit those lows.

Remember, that no matter how good your monitors are they won't help unless the room is properly laid out and treated.

I've also tried the JBL's 4326 for a month or two and liked it a lot. Then I got a chance to demo the Adam A7 for 3 months, kept it and swapped it out with the JBL's. Both are really great monitors. Had the Genelec 8020A little monitors, but wasn't what I was looking for. Kept the Samson Rubicon 6A that was originally recommended from couple of friends. Kept the Blue Sky as well.

For the intended budget of $1K-$2K, I'll say JBL or Adams are sweet. Add a sub and it's almost in the $2K range.

ADAM A7 + sub, comes to about 2 to 2.5k$. I compared A7 to similar size Genelecs and liked A7 stereo image and highs better, silky smooth but revealing, a steal for the price. Every time I start monitoring I have a feeling I have the main system connected to my Mac.

The outcome of this was that I also replaced my 11 year old main system (large custom made floor standing monitors & 2x250W NAD amp) with ADAM S3A + Genelec 7071A. Good enough for Abbey Road Studios reference system, good enough for me...

Hey, all. This is my first post here, though I've been lurking for a little while and have really enjoyed and learned a lot in these discussions.

Personally, I have a pair of the Adam A5s, which just came out in the past few months. A friend of mine has the A7s, which got me interested in the Adam line, though the A5s are a new lower price point for the same technology. The A5s are smaller and do not put out as much volume as the A7s, but for me they've been working out beautifully and are more than loud enough. The A5s bottom out at 55hz, though there's also a sub to accompany them which'll come out pretty soon, called the Sub7. I probably won't end up doing it myself, though when I got the A5s I had the idea that I could get more than a stereo pair to do surround mixing, which could potentially still be within the $3k range.

Looking again at the prices, it looks like Adam monitors went up across the board in the past few weeks, probably because of this financial mess we're in now.. Seriously, though, if you get a chance to hear the Adam monitors it's definitely worth checking out. I listened to a number of different models, and I really like the sound they put out the best over other brands.

thanks for all the replies.

I have a pair of older Krk V6's with the Sub. But I question why would you get such expensive monitors for documentary work? If you were creating musical scores using a lot of synths and orchestral samples then a good set of monitors would be a necessity in a corrected room. Unless you have a unlimited budget and have all your other equipment and have money to blow then JBL's, Genelecs, Adams, Krks or even ProAc would be my recommendation. In addition...even though people hate yamahas ns10s...I find it still a useful thing to have when creating music. My 2 Cents.

I edit on headphones mix on speakers.

I'm using Adam A7s, I agree they're great, did comparisons with most of the others. Got mine before the A5s appeared, now think I'd have gotten those for closer desktop mixing.

Cheers.
