Hi Guys
I occasionally see a movie with the corners of the screen Black like its fogged up, like its a old movie....is it a filter..or am i a bit vague??

cheers

I did one recently in PremPro2

It was designed as a vignette shaped as an offset film frame.

I created a round cornered rectangle in the titler window. Turned off the fill and applied a shadow to it. I used the widest spread I could on the shadow to blur the edges and applied 85% opacity to the shadow.

I laid that title on the timeline above the clip then I applied a Trackmatte filter to the clip and used the Title (Video 2) as the matte.

I then used some motion and scale to position the matte as I wanted (slightly offset from centre).

Simple and easy.

It would also be easy to add some gate weave or jitter to this with key frames if desired.

(BTW: When I had a Matrox RTX100 this effect was built in as a preset of Aged film.)

Your link - That is what I did and as I described. (In PremPro 2)

What NLE are you using?

If you have After Effects its easy as well. Make a mask , invert it, blur/feather the edges and position/scale it.

Im using FCP,Shake,Motion I hate AfterEffects Big time....

It's really easy in FCP. It's super easy and fast. Here's two methods you can use in FCP, each will produce the same effect, each with it's own unique characteristics:

1- Go to the Video Filters bin, then to Mattes, then use the Soft Edges filter on your clip. You can adjust it to make the effect you want. Very easy to do.

2- For more control of the same effect, instead of the Soft Edges filter, try applying the Mask Shape first, adjust, then use the Mask Feather after that to soften up the edges. This gives the same effect, just with some more detailed control.

Super easy, super fast, super nice.
