Monitor HD thru SD firewire?

I suppose that this has been covered ad nauseum. I'm not sure how to search for this. I'm able to import and edit P2 720pn material on FCP/Mac G5 2x3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon yadda yadda...

Previously, I have been importing DVCPRO50 thru Firewire and monitoring FCP through the Firewire connection. I also have been changing the playback settings in Audio/Video Settings to allow playback through a DVD recorder which worked great for the client monitor.

This apparently doesn't work with DVCPROHD 720pn. I can edit just fine on my Cinema displays, but the Firewire connection will only display a still frame. The audio passes fine but not the video. Any thoughts?

To monitor DVCPRO HD you have only a couple options...well, a few.

1) get a DVCPRO HD deck (spendy) and route via firewire thru then component or SDI to an HDTV or HD Production monitor.

2) get a P2 Gear and route thru that via firewire, then Component or SDI to monitor (also need HD monitor)

3) HD capture card like the AJA or Decklink series...via component or SDi to HD monitor. These will also downconvert HD to SD for viewing on SD monitor. Or Decklink Intensity Pro via HDMI to HDTV.

4) Matrox MXO to HD monitor, or TV, or to computer monitor. This will get a broadcast image onto an Apple 23"or Dell 24" monitor

The HVX-200 doesn't allow for this...that's why Barry didn't mention it. But it can be used as a card reader. Just lose use of the camera while you do that.

The HPX170 has the ability to pass an HD firewire input signal out its component and HD-SDI outputs, just like a P2 Gear does. So you just plug in the firewire to the HPX170, and plug the component or HD-SDI outputs into your monitor. Put it in MCR mode, turn off the thumbnails, and it'll act as a pass-thru device to convert firewire DVCPRO-HD signals into video signals displayed on your monitor.
