Are you entering M/P in any other festivals? Or are you leaving it alone because of Eloquent Graffiti? Just wondering about your marketing strategy here.

BTW, looks great in HD.
 
i'm not going to tour it at smaller fests the way i did with IFHY. i'll throw it at some top tier fests and see if it sticks. if not, it will serve a purpose raising awareness for the feature so i'll keep it online.
 
Congrats on the top 3, Zak! You were my number one, but I see why it can't be everyone's cup 'o tea. :( What would you do with a Movietube anyway? Ha ha.

thanks tim! i would have passed on the movietube anyway. :) but I did get my first choice despite picking third, which was nice. and based on the most common criticism here and on IFHY, i think the community will think I made the perfect choice.

Just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed this piece and actually watched it about 4 or 5 times...which is unusual for me. Normally I don't enjoy watching a piece more than once or twice. And to be completely honest I tend to enjoy more of the Hollywood fluff (Bourne Identity, etc.), but there is something about your work that is intriguing to me...

I really hope I can eventually make films that are as engaging and as subtle as yours are!

Congratulations man and good luck with your future endeavors! If you are ever in Texas again let me know...I would love to sit down and pick your brain!

thought I'd share my "script" / "shooting schedule". don't laugh. i'm not a writer. i don't like writing. my "scripts" are more like notes on a blueprint. this is what i was working from.

the one labelled THURSDAY I wrote then went out and shot the footage of John driving to and from the studio location including him knocking on the door and anticipating its opening.

the pdf labelled FRIDAY was my "rewrite" if you can call it that, that I did the night before.

check them out. you'll see we departed from what was written, opting to chase what was working organically in front of the cameras. and then Jamie stepped in as editor and made further choices that departed from what we had shot to craft the final film.
 
Zak, I just wanted to say that the single most exciting part of this film, even with the beautiful images, was the acting.

I was wondering your process of sitting down with your actors.

My question is when you sit down for meetings with your cast do you have them establish possibly a personal past history and then maybe a relationship history and have them sort of build these scenes out of their mutual histories while just sort of guiding them along the way? Or do you have these ideas fleshed out prior to meeting them and more or less coach the performances out of them?

Both performances were jaw-dropping and literally convinced me to care at that doorway sequence. Woods' prepubescent excitement and the girls hesitance were more than enough to kind of explain their history/standing in the relationship.

In the end I just thoroughly enjoyed it and rarely find acting like this in nanobudget cinema.

ps I stopped following this thread in January and was honestly extremely disappointed the dj sequence wasn't involved. That is what I do for a living and was really excited to see if someone could get it right.
 
wow, I agree totally with matthewbones. The acting gave this piece a depth that I have rarely seen in short films :) I especially liked the photographer's facial expressions at the door. Mesmorising stuff :D

Are you entering in Questfest? It would be awesome to see what else you can do. Plus I want to see more of what that camera is capable of in the right hands.
 
Haha, that's my buddy Jeff on the dolly there shooting Searching for Sonny. He also shot our feature The Echo Game. Sometimes it does pay to be an early adopter! Thumbs up on the article.

Someone thought enough of this short film to re-conceptualize it as a music video. I think that’s pretty flattering to say the least. Don't know who this is though. Anyone here maybe?

nice^^...So any updates on Eloquent Graffiti? Still shooting with the d90 or switching over to something else?
