mkh60 = delicious

Oh, I was thinking the MKH60 was longer than the CS-3e. Is the CS-3e or the MKH60 really worth twice the money than the CS-1 or the AT4073a?

If it is only 10% more quality, why spend twice the amount of money?

Jeremy

To my ear, the CS-3e sounds more than 10% better than the CS-1. I liked the overall sound of the CS-1 but it did present with what I felt was a little too much sibilance. The CS-3e did almost everything right and is very versatile.

MKH Sennheisers are solid as well. I would be happy with the MKH-50 or 60.

The mkh50 was my other last purchase and it is also nice sounding!

Based upon Dan's samples, that mkh50 really sounded impressive. I'm envious.
As far as shotguns go, that KMR81 seems to me to be the king of the hill--instant sound booth on a stick. Bass response blew me away although it is probably too selective for my application. I actually want some but not too much air tone so will probably go for the CS3e when I can afford to move up from the 4073.

Shawneous:

We have talked about this before when you bought your RED. You either had rich parents or rob banks at night? An MKH-50 and 60 and a RED, I am envious ;-)

I'm scraping just buy a Carrion and an HPX-170 when they hit. Oh yeah, then there is that Nikon D300 that I want to upgrade to from my D80...Home repairs are really eating into my gear budget this year. Damn house!

Lol, I wish! No to both. The Red my dad split with me, and of my half I've only paid for half, the other half is riding on massive debt! As for my audio, I am an eBay ninja. Both my mkh50 and my mkh60 were picked up around $850 apiece. I then picked up two 2xx Lectrosonics systems on eBay for about $1000 apiece but then sucked it up and paid full price for a B6 and Cos11. If I had paid full price for everything, my audio kit would be worth about $15k, damn this forum! :-). I still have debt, plus I'm one of the only guys at my day job (software engineering) that lives in an apartment and drives a crummy car. I've sacrificed big time, because to me, these aren't 'toys', these are the necessary tools in order for me to build my skills and make movies that get noticed.

Hi Shawneous:

Ughh, debt. You do realize that I was just kidding around, right? Good for you that you are willing to put it all on the line to realize your filmmaking dreams, very admirable. You have the best tools, now you need to get your films together and make them happen.

Nothing wrong with driving a crummy car as long as it is reliable. Cars are the dumbest place to waste money at anyway, they are just a money drain. At least your camera has the possibility of making you money, I think as long as you have a viable business plan, what you are doing is smart.

Apartments, while kind of a financial waste, are not bad if you are young and not on your ultimate path. Buying a condo or house is obviously a good investment but I will tell you, when you are hit for $25,000.00 in home upkeep all at once, sometimes letting the landlord worry about all of that is nice too. Just had fumigation for termites ($2.5k), need wood repair for dry rot and termite damage ($6k), paint house ($5k), New front door ($1.5k), new patio cover ($6k), new garage door ($2k), new french doors in back ($2.5k). So that's where my RED went ;-( Oh yeah, let's not forget, daughters new private school (not being snobby, local high school is scary bad) another $10k.

Someday I can move past 1/3"/1/2" cameras and get that dolly to go with the jib and get that grip truck I have always needed.

Have a good weekend.

Wish we had mass transit that could work for me, but I live 60 miles from our office, work weird and inconsistent hours and have to load tons of gear into the car for shoots that would difficult to carry on a bus or train.

I agree, cars are a pain and $$$.

Dan

mkh-70 is a very specialized mic. It is a very long shotgun and is best used for interviews outdoors when you cannot get the mic close enough to the talent. Long shotgun is an "exotic", not a good all around mic at all. The NKH-60 and 50 are much more usable in more types of situations.

Dan

I'm sorry guys I do agree that mkh60 is a good mic but for television or interviews. 416 in my opinion sounds much warmer and it is better for narratives. I own both and love both of them but I must say i prefer 416 little more.
