C100: Miss Universe, is it possible to get footage this clear using a Canon C100?

I'm sure you've all seen the Miss Universe video. Here it is if you haven't. I love the clarity of the images and would like to know if this is possible using a Canon C100? If not, what would I need to get such nice looking shots? Is it the lighting or the camera? Combination of both? I'm guessing the footage was filmed at 60p? Does that make a difference?

First of, it's Miss Universe, not Miss America.

This was shot with regular 2/3" broadcast cameras, shooting at 1080i60 (not 60p). The cameras are worth 5 times the price of the C100 and some of the box lenses for the back of the house could easily be 10 times. The lighting was quite bright and high contrast, adding to the appearance of "clarity" as you put it. The smaller sensor size of 2/3" generally has greater apparent depth of field, they were working at what was likely a decently deep stop and certainly the Steadicam shots were wide angle, so pretty much everything looked in focus. It looked like any well-produced broadcast event show to me. You're not particularly going to get that look on the C100.

I just feel sorry for Miss Colombia. She apparently doesn't speak English so she had to be so confused. And Miss USA could hide her feelings -- seething when she came in 3rd and then laughing with glee when she found out the top prize when to the wrong person. Can't wait to see what Saturday Night Live does with this.

I think Miss Colombia would look great filmed on an iPhone...

This is just regulation interlaced video. Nothing special. To my eye, it looks very dated, technically and creatively.

There's an option to watch that clip in 60p on YouTube. When I first clicked on the link, that's what played automatically for me. I suspect that's what the OP is referring to, the 60p motion. That's definitely more of a video look than a cinematic look. Yes, you can do it with the C100 MKII, but it's not really the point or the strength of the camera.

To borrow from what Mitch (aside of the SNL bit) said - if you have C100, you'd be shooting with a wide angle lens, at F11-F16, 1080 60 fps. A high end studio cameras run $250,000 (+$150,000 for the lens) but you won't need the versatility for the Steadicam type shot up close and personal. An external monitor/recorder for a high bit rate ProRes would be helpful.

Of course, you want "sharper", you can always shoot in 4K. Not with C100, obviously.

Sent you a private message with a private link to a snippet from a concert I directed and my production company was hired to cover live. (I can not post it publicly unfortunately). We used three C100's and shot 1080p 24p, and a 4th camera (5d mark iii for select audience shots). The results were absolutely fantastic.

The lighting was a mixture of LED colored stage lights, tungsten spot lights (probably something to the effect of source 4's not sure), and there was a large screen projection at the back of the stage which would play videos or sometimes just as special graphics, effects, etc..

We mostly used 70-200mm lenses and were set to 1250 ISO, and we shot with the CP8 profile which didn't need too much grading other than a bit of color correction take out some red.

The lighting was not as extravagant as the Miss Universe show (360 lighting basically) but at least from what I sent you, you'll get an idea of what you can expect with C100's. I would have no hesitation using them again.

cheers,

But here are some frame grabs I am able to post.

These are slightly colored in photoshop for the purposes of posting still images but on the video the original CP8 profile was virtually left untouched:

Hey Starcentral,

Thanks for sharing the frames and info, it does look good!

I'm considering the Mark 2 of this camera and would love to see the snippet too if it's possible to send it to me.
