What are the bare neccesities for starting out with the 7D?

Body (comes with battery)
Lens
Card

Anything else?

I got the 38-135mm kit lens. I'm not really suggesting it...I got a few other lenses too...but if you're looking for the quickest way to start shooting, this lens has IS (isn't very fast though) and has a good zoom range. I felt it was a steal at + $200 over the body only.

I'd suggest, instead of getting the kit lens since it doesn't go very wide, buy just the body for $1700 and get something like the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (constant zoom throughout the range -- very useful) for about $450.

Then all you have to do is start shooting stuff.

Yeah, the constant zoom is very useful in the Tamron. With the kit lens, you'll get little flickers when you zoom. I've only have 1 Sandisk Extreme 3 so far, but am planning on trying the SanDisk Ultra 2. They're way cheaper, and people on here say they work fine.

The Kingstons are cheap, but after reading a bunch of user reviews on Amazon and BH, I'm a little scared to use them because of corruption issues. Sandisk user reviews are generally really good.

I like the kit with the 18-135. Because of the crop sensor, the 18 gives you a nice wide image. This kit comes with an extra battery and UV filter. It's $300 over the body only, but I think it's a good deal.

Yeah, I recommend the 18-135 kit as well. It has the extra battery, UV filter and Lens hood with it. Everything but a CF card to get started.

cards - stuff

cards - stuff

I recommend any card rated x133 or above, i got 16GB for $40, Kingston brand. you don't need faster unless you want to shoot raw stills at 8fs.

The kit lens is nice for pictures, Ive never used it for video.

I think the $99 50mm 1.8 is also a great first purchase. It gets you into the world of prime lenses and you will smile at the warm glow of pictures taken in lowlight with a shutter speed of 1/40-1/80th of a second.

I bought a lens hood for my 50mm, and a UV filter for my kit lens. That was my starting kit.

Since then I have spent $500 on the 28mm 1.8 canon, and $330 for a used 85mm 1.8. These are my two main video lenses. Im buying the z-finder soon.

For filming im having great success (on my d90) with just a 50mm 1.8, and a 28mm 2.8. (neither of which cost me over $100)

just saying if your looking to go bare bones.

jon!

Stabilization? just as important. Most important with these camera's if you ask me.

I assume you mean the "IS" capability of the lens, in which case the 18-135 also has this and it works exceptionally well, aside from a faint sound of the motors which if you're recording sound with the on-board mic, you'll definitely pick it up in post.

Surprised more people haven't mentioned tripods, Paul Jay nailed it! :-)

Anything else depends on what you shoot, how you intend to do it, and your own opinions of what makes a quality image. Some examples:

Outdoors? .3, .6 ND filters and a circular polarizer.
Indoors? How about a modest light or two? Or at least a collapsing bounce disc?
Love wide angle? A lens that is at least 28mm wide to get full-room shots (remember that pesky small-sensor crop factor)
Macro? Maybe extension tubes would help.
Anything "run and gun"? Maybe a shoulder stabilizer is for you after all.
Do you care at ALL about audio? You'll need an external recorder for usable sound.
Just farting around? (and that's ok, that's not a criticism or judgement call) Then stick with the basics you mentioned, get out there, shoot like a madperson, and THEN start to assess how you shoot and what accessories might really improve your work.

Come on guys! Share all the info with one guy but not the next?!

BE FAIR!!! Help everyone or don't post! An admin has been notified.

You'll need one of these too, don't listen to everyone on public forums. Half of these bozos just wanna show off their kits.

That's a good deal- where did you buy that kit? B&H offers a bare bones 18-135mm kit for 2129.95 but w/no extra batt or UV filter.
