Microphones

My cat knows when I have done bad and more importantly knows the path from bedroom to bathroom is a perfect place to plant some regurgitated hair to be found late at night. Nothing sweeter then waking up to a nice cold squish under your foot.

So far no retaliation for my kitten comments of late but I see her with maps of Croatia and a big circle around the home of some guy named "Cash".

Off to my second favorite website now:http://kittenwar.com/

Wabbit, I heard you were talking about me. I'm really flattered, man, honestly. To tell you the truth, I don't like cats at all. So I'm posting stupid questions just to get rid of some of them. And you're the man for the job. Did your kitten found Croatia on the map?

She found it but don't worry she's got the whole thing is upside down. Cats are very bad with north and south.

So really it's just your karma at stake if you proceed with the on-camera mic/kitten killing plan.

Cheers  (and watch your feet at night, she might eventually figure out about the poles)

So the Rode NTG2 Condenser Mic will work fine mounted on the DVX100b? And the sound quality is good? Im also looking for a camera mounted mic because I do weddings and events by myself. What does eveyone think of this Mic?

its okay, maybe good, but not great. and these comments refer to boom use, not cam mounted.

cam mounting will only give you sparkly sound if you are a foot or two away from target and they are speaking roughly towards camera.

Hey Timapter,
Thanks for your reply....what would be one of the better Camera Mounted Mics Avialable within a good affordable price range?($199-299). I usually shoot events where I walk around, point and shoot, with random people at times talking to the camera, sporting events , and so on. But in all...what would be the best Camera Mounted mic?
Thanks

For sound quality and reach, what you really want is a long gun - but there is a problem. It is usually too long and ends up in the shot.

If you really insist on attempting a camera-mounted mic, try to find a used 4073a - you should be able to find one somewhere near your price range. But, understand that you will be hampered now with two problems. The first is trying to use a camera-mounted mic for your primary audio, and the second is you are going to try to do it with a cheap mic. In your price range, there is little that would sound good even if you mounted it on a boom. If you go with the 4073a, you have some hope.

What model is the 4073a? Do you have a link to the exact website where I can buy? And also...since im the one man crew, I cant hold a shotgun mike and a camera at the same time. I was also wonering if i could use my wireless mic to mic up the main person and use the camera mounted mic as well for other action thats going on as well.
Thanks for your time,

With the Audio Technica AT4073a will this get in the way of getting the Mic in the shot like you said would happen with a long mic?

NO! I have both the 4073a and the dvx100a...which of course is a wider lens than most prosumer cameras. With this mic camera mounted, one does not see the mic. And there are many ways to mount a mic depending on which mount you purchase, but I suggest using the shock mount, you would find in many of the previous audio threads [Stickies] You always feel better doing your homework!

Hey whats up.
I have been doing my homework and im torn. At first i was gonna go Azden 100ULT. But people say thats garbage. Then I was gonna go with Rode N2G but then some liked it some didnt.
So here's the deal. I would like to get a camera mounted Mic(and i thought brackets came with the DVX100B to mount) because im a one crew person. I would use this mic and also a Lav mic to wire the Groom so both the bride and groom will be heard when there vows are said.
With this in mind I heard that the Oktava mk012 Indoor Mic and the Lecto M150 wirless mic would be ideal because they get good sounc and mix well. I have shot footage where sound didnt matter...and I am a video editor by profession and never had to deal with mics. So with the two mics above do justice? Or is there any other way withing a tight budget...$200 for boom or mounted and $599 for wirless...please fill me in when you can. Thanks!

I will sell you a Lectro M152 for $200...four of them if you want.
..................the Lectro lav aint what you are looking for. If you got the money the Lectro wireless units are great, the lavs are decent but you are probably looking for the actual wireless packs. For $600 you are looking at the Sennheiser offering.

Oktava would probably not be a good choice for mounting on the camera (not that any mic is). It is sensitive to handling noise and has a very wide pattern. The 4073 is probably the best bargin choice for camera mounting (it hurts to even say that).

Cheers

Your challenge is: a cheap mic at 2' distance will kick butt over a v. expensive mic at 20'. Closer or closest is best when placing a mic.

Hey thanks for the offer with the mics. Im actually looking at a Wirless Lapel Mic and a Camera Mounted Mic The Oktava 4073...and im still in search for a Wireless Lapel Mic. Anyone have any suggestions?

Okay, enough. EditSuite, you need to do your homework - your questions show you clearly have not.

You keep talking about a "wireless lapel mic" - what wireless transmitter and receiver are you hooking it up to? A "wireless lapel mic" is worthless without the wireless packs to hook it up. Wabbit was not offering you wireless packs for $200 - he was offering you an inferior "lapel mic".

Before you do anything else, go to www.dplay.com and order Jay Rose's book on Audio. He covers most, if not all of the basics you need to understand before you take another step towards buying equipment. If you continue to buy equipment armed with the lack of knowledge you have - you will be taken for a ride. (And, I'm not saying Wabbit was taking you for a ride - as a matter of fact, I think his offer was a bit tongue-in-cheek.)

If you want to better understand the microphones that plug into wireless transmitters (also known as lavalieres, though my spelling may be wrong) search for Countryman, Sanken and Tram. (And, no, I'm not recommending any of those brands, though if you do your search properly you will immediately see which one I personally favor).

Hey PTalSky
That is exactly why im on these forums. To get some insight and help and understanding on what is the best way to go. I did a search and have looked at tons of topics on this. I could link everyone i did research on to this page.

Yes I do have lack of knowlege in this area, and this is a community to go to for help so I have been asking for advice. You don't have to anwser any of my questions if you dont want to and if you get annoyed by my questions...don't take offense to them. Im trying to get the best advice from the people kind enough to actually help me. So if anyone could shed some guidance and what they would highly recommend me to use for that I do, please do not hesitate. There is a bunch of conlficting reports on all the Audio equipment..some like this and that....others do not.

For my needs with my DVX100b which is a Camera Mounted Boom Mic and a Wireless lavalier/lapel system because i am a one person crew, what combination would work the best? And also on a tight budget to.
Sorry for anyone else who will get upset with these questions. Thats why I go to this site for expert opions and guidance on this topic.
Thank you sincerely everyone and anyone for there help.
