Microphones

What is a good (yet not too expensive) external microphone for the DVX? Also, where is a good place to get this kind of mic?

Again, I will rush to the aid of a vauge question before the admins see it and John Hudson shows up at your house with a bat. Go with the Oktava MK012 for indoor stuff. The sennheiser ME66 for outdoor. Also, invest in a brinks home security if you plan to ask questions this general in the future.

I use a Rode NTG2 shotgun for my outdoor shoots. For about $270 you can get this kit from B&H. It includes the mic, windscreen ( I suggest picking up a "deadcat" as well), shockmount, and 1 ft. XLR cable. Not a bad deal considering it's about half the price of a ME66.

Do a search on the Rode, you'll find a lot of folks using this mic.

I would never pollute my drink in that fashion.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

It does bring a whole new meaning to dirty martini though... although it would have to be a thin drink with that mic.

AAAAAAHHHHH!!!! Deja vu thread!!! I've been here before... Quick! Someone give me that drink! I'll stir it with a Schoeps if I have to... :)

Okay - here's the deal. Go ahead and buy an ME66 - you'll love it. It will be the best sounding mic you've ever heard. Please, buy it as soon as you can, and be sure to buy it from someone that doesn't allow returns. Please, please, please buy an ME66 - oh how it is my favorite mic ever made. Makes my 416 sound terrible, tinny and thin...and I don't even want to tell you how bad it makes my 4073a and my Octava sound. (Oh, and btw, why bother buying any other mic? All you need is an ME66 for both your interiors and exteriors - awww heck, why not use it for your stereo special effects - hey, speaking of which, why not buy two, so you can do true stereo dialogue recording. Why would you ever want to have to worry about remixing things in post - just get it all the first time and you'll be set. Oh, and be sure to mount the ME66 on your camera - you'll get the best audio that way. And don't worry about cables, the cheap ones from Guitar Center are great. No problems with them, even running them over large power lines. Oh, and if you need a boom - I'm not sure why since you will have your mic camera-mounted - just pick up a cheap painter's pole. They work great, nice and stable and quiet. Let's see, what else....oh, when you set the audio levels on the camera, make sure you take them all the way up to the top of the red bars...you want to make sure you can hear every nuance from these incredible microphones.)

I think that just about covers everything you would ever need to know about capturing great audio. No need to buy Jay Rose's book or even bother to read the sticky posts at the top of the forum. Hey, can we make my post a sticky too?

All really good advice...but remember it is Phil's goal to see how many kittens you can dump into the Amazon before it fills up http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=68164

productive thread. I am glad i haven't asked a dumb question in the audio section, but give me some time.
No one here cares about a dumb question. There are really no dumb questions but there is a bit of leg work to be done before "calling tech support". In school, did you raise your hand to ask what time it is or did you look at the clock on the wall?

Also extremely general questions are pretty hard to give a usefull answer to, ie:
Q: What is a good mic?
A: One that translates sound waves into an electrical signal. :undecided

It's August 25, we shall call this general mic question number ONE. Each time one of these "what is a good mic questions" comes up, we shall give it a successive number. Any bets as to how long it will take to get to 20?

The goal here is to not belittle or scare off noobie questions but to encourage the use of the search function and checking out stickies before posting. I don't think you find anyone frustrated when someone ressurrects an old thread on cheap mics to clarify how it might apply to them. The audio forum has 2,289 topics. Any bets on how many are "best cheap mic" threads?

It is the "what is that clunk" question for the audio section.

Cheers

Agreed, There are about 7 of you who really know your stuff and have been very generous in sharing it. I have learned a ton so I feel fortunate to have come across your posts. I know brands, concepts and words that were not in my universe a few months ago so thank you. I am sure the same questions become tiring. On the HVX side in addition to the "clunk" "click" ""cluck" threads, there is a "why is this camera $3000 in brooklyn" question at least every 2 days.

When Hans recommended the ME66 (AT4073A for a few bucks more is the general consensus for outdoor here), I knew he was getting hammered. It was like watching national geographic and the seal pup goes too far off of shore and the killer whales are waiting. They don't eat him right away, they knock him around in the water first, even play for awhile. I wasn't commenting on the original question but more so that. No one wants to be that seal. :-)

Hey Wabbit, you'd better watch yourself - my cat read your post and was sending you the evil eye...and let me tell you...a firball in my shoe is the easiest I've ever gotten off when I've gotten that evil eye...

Be forewarned. ;-)
