Microphones

Edit,

The purpose of my post was not to take offense at your questions. It's just that many of your questions have been answered many times, and yes there are conflicting answers throughout the posts here. And, as I read through this thread, the questions have been answered again, but even still, I will give it one more shot.

For the shotgun, first, the recommendation is not to go camera mounted. But, if you have to, then go with an Audio Technica 4073a. From a value perspective, which is the way I look at equipment, this will give you the best results (note I did not say good results, but the best results under the circumstances).

For wireless, the Sennheiser G2 series will probably be your best bet. You can get the ENG set, which includes both a standard Tx and and plug-on Tx (but, you will probably need to upgrade to the G2-500 series, since the less-expensive 100 series does not do phantom power). You will have to replace the stock lavaliere that comes with it. The best low-budget option for you is the Countryman EMW.

Please note that this post repeats information I posted earlier in this thread.

Hope this helps.

Phil

Way to be straight forward ptalsky! Editsuite, or whatever his name is, will love that. You know, if we made a general list of information about mics, people would be reading it all the time. That could help tons of filmmakers (heck, I was stuck on general questions like this before too). We should make a whole thread which gives you every bit of info your looking for:

1. If you film weddings and are a one man crew you need (insert mic name)
2. If you film movies in the dark with chinese people that have rough accents, you need (insert mic name)
3. If you film outdoors a lot but can only pay $500 for a mic (insert mic name)

That would be nice, eh? But there's no list like that, so people ask these "general questions" all the time. It's all good, I learned a bit from this thread, I like it.

There are three posts that do this already - they're the stickies at the top of the forum. Do they answer limited questions, no. They are general, but for the most part answer those questions and many more of the basic questions.

I win :)

Haha, I'm so stupid. I've read those sticky's at the top tons of times too. It just slipped my mind I guess. So wait...what is it? Why don't the new people that come here just click on those sticky's at the top? They're in BRIGHT YELLOW colors, and nothing's more attracting than yellow.

I think when people ask, "what's a good mic to get" they are really asking,
"I have only x-amount of dollars, what's the best mic that will get me."

After having read numerous post by Jeremy and Matt and by doing a little
correspondance of my own with a few audio experts, I came to the conclusion
audio is NOT the place for short cuts.

So I sold everything I wasn't using on Ebay and made $1k. I bought my
Oktava, windjammer, bbg, 4073a and softie without digging into my savings.

The question isn't what's a good mic, it's what I can afford. What I am saying,
it's not what you can afford right now, it's how industrious you will make
yourself to get the RIGHT product.

Bad audio will kill your production before the bad acting will.

Although, Ive been on some shows with acting so bad I wanted to record MOS to save the actors the humiliation of watching it. :)
