Microphone for Canon HF200

Right, first post here.

I own a Canon HF200 and I keep having problems finding microphones that works with it. It seems like you need to use powered microphones if you want to do down the lavalier route, but where I live it seems like my only option is a selection of models from Audio Technica.

Most of the content I've done so far is web only, but I've now had a couple of requests to do product training videos and need to get myself a decent mic. I'm a one man band, so it needs to be something that's simple to use and preferably something I can also use with a computer in case I need to do voice overs at a later stage.

Sorry for sounding like a noob, but I don't have a lot of experience with video making as I only started making videos last year.

Cheers

This works well with an HF200. Leave the gain at factory default on the receiver, then use manual mic level to turn down the gain on the camera, to a peak level of around -12dB. This will result in less hiss from the camera's pre-amps.

Well, that's all nice gear, a bit outside of my budget though and not available in my corner of the world as it happens.

I have considered a separate voice recorder, although I don't have any experience using one. The best stuff on sale here is gear from Sony or Olympus, all of which is insanely overpriced. As an example, the Sony PCM-M10 is selling for US$100 more here than in the states.

I was really hoping for something affordable that would do the trick. Audio Technica has a good range of stuff here for acceptable prices, but it also seems to be the only brand on sale here that offers powered mics.

Starting at the simple... Your headset mic, does it share the headphone plug or is it separate (do you have one plug, or two)?
If it's one then I do not think it will work. It will cut out the on board mic as it will open that part of the circuit to disable it. It will also, most likely, have 4 or 5 contacts on the plug (tip, usually ground, 2 or 3 bands, one for mic and others for left and right headphone, and the part that enters the "handle").
If it has 2 separate plugs, are you sure you are not plugging in the headphone instead of the mic?

Look, I'm not retarded, I know what goes in where and what type of plugs are what.

I got myself an Audio Technica mic with a power module and it works just fine. It's not the ideal solution, but it does the job I need it to do for now.
