Hey guys!

need an advice - what kind of mic would you suggest for c300 run and gun shooting? i was thinking about rode ntg 3, have heard its a good one, but its kind of long......

maybe i should get 2 mics ( 1 for tight/small places)

Looking forward for your suggestions!

regards

The NTG-3 is a really phenomenal mic, and IMO is the best mic you can get under $1000. I use it as my C300's on-cam mic when I need to get the best on-cam sound possible, and I wouldn't trust anything else on-cam if the audio is critical and I don't have a dedicated sound op. Plus, it can really withstand the elements; I've had mine out in dusty, wet, humid, rainy, cold, & hot environments, and it always works perfect and sounds great. However, it is relatively long (10") and heavy (nearly 6 ounces).

When I just need basic on-cam audio or a scratch track, I use an Audio-Technica AT875, which is just 6.9" and weighs only 2.8 ounces. It's so small, you probably won't even realize when it's attached.

I'm also planning on picking up a Rode Videomic Pro or Stereomic Pro for when I need sound and I'm not using the LCD/XLR unit. That combo of mics should have me covered for any situation.

When I do have a sound person, I use the NTG-2 for on camera ambient sound. It is small and light and does a good job.

thank u for the info! 1 thing - does the c300 give power to xlr? i mean, its seems like ntg3 is Phantom Powered only ..... i kind of confused....

yes, the c300 does have p48 phantom power from it's XLR. Bothe the ntg-3 and at875 are phantom powered only.

Rode Video Mic Pro is fantastic...WAY better then I ever thought. Definitely a budget option but the performance is good and shockmounted, etc.

An issue I have with my Sony NXCAM is using the Rode NTG-2/3 with a fluffy windscreen the mic can be just in shot and needs to be groomed or adjusted slightly out of shot, on the C300/C100 the mic holder looks like it is quite a bit higher and well out of shot?

BTW @anatusa the NTG-2 has a single AA battery compartment so can power itself as well as externally via XLR, whereas the NTG-3 can only be powered via XLR. The NTG-2 is a good mic and half the price of the NTG-3, but is slightly longer (23mm). Though as cowpunk52 said the NTG-3 is awesome.

oh great! thanks for helping me out with that! seems the info i read before was wrong!

phantom power makes the chose a little easier!

the ntg3 was my main chose,- for out side filming .....

what would you get for on cam mic if u film inside the house/room? as i understand the shotgun mic is not the best chose?

Schoeps CMITU5 or Schoeps collette depending on the situation. With the proper windscreen the CMITU5 is great in exterior situations with wind, the Colette is more of a close range indoor mic in situations with multiple characters in close proximity.

from time to time i ll strip down the cam , meaning will take off that monitor unit...... it means no xlr....... so instead of getting an extra mic for 3.5mm input i am thinking about buying an XLR to 3.5mm adopter! has anyone tried it yet? any suggestions? and 1 more thing - if i ll plug my phantom powered only mic in to the 3.5mm hole - will i get the power or in that case i need a self powered mic?

For interiors and places with high-reflectance, I like the Audio-Technica 4053b. Great value for a hyper and sounds really nice and full. I've never used it on-camera, though.

How are the preamps on the C300? I imagine the C100 audio unit will be the same so I'm curious. With the NTG3, lavs, etc, can you get nice clean audio, no noise, no hiss, etc, using on-camera audio processing?

Thats the case with the C300, yes. Id assume the C100 may be similar or same components so, should be good to go, though it's untested.

The Videomic Pro is great for what it is, but the upcoming Videomic HD appears be a more versatile choice. It has a built-in recorder, which might be a great backup in case there's an issue with the minijack connection, & when not on-camera could possibly be hid on set.

I´ve been waiting for ages for the VMHD and had to buy sth, so I went with the new Sennheiser MKE600. I´m planning to do a comparison with my 416, but so far, as an onboard mic, it sounds great!

My on camera mic of choice for the C300 is Sennheiser MKH 60P 48, just an amazing mic and worth every penny. This is a super cardioid which I prefer on a camera. Even though on camera mic audio is only used about 5% of the time in our productions.
