Metabones Speed Booster

I wonder if this adapter also reduces the minimum focusing distance of the lenses? That would be really sweet.

Metabones is an INCREDIBLE company. I cannot believe the stuff they make. Metabones I was really good, but right after I got it, they came out with Metabones II (A lot better than Mark I), which I just bought about 3 days ago, and now this Speed Booster? I feel like I'm always about a day late with their products since they innovate so fast.

But I guess I'll live since I'm a long lens kind of guy as I love that compressed look and their 2 adapters somewhat compliment each other. But I might just have to get this at some point. Wait for some real world tests.

The mark II won't be wasted exactly. It's nice to have reach with the 1.5 crop when you need it, then scale back and brighten up with the speed booster when you need that. It's actually kind of perfect for many occasions switching between dark and tight indoors and bright and open outdoors shooting isn't it?

35mm T1.5 (F1.4) becomes ~25mm ~T1.1 (F1.0) Just divide focal length and Fstop/Tstop by 1.41x (or multiply by 0.71x)

I suppose you could use both adapters and carry half as many lenses, interesting idea. Problem is the "lens set" will have alternating optical characteristics, it might be a bit like carrying around a 5Dmk2 and 7D and alternately shooting on both to double your lens set. Half the time you're lenses will be 1stop faster and have better center and worse edge performance. In the end, the differences might not be noticeable if you aren't shooting wide open anyway and your style works with lenses that do not have a consistent wide open aperture.

But yes, I suppose you could basically carry a 24mm f1.4, 50 1.4, 85 f1.4 and they would double as 17mm f1.0, 35mm f1.0 and 60mm f1.0 with the speed booster on. 17, 24, 35, 50, 60, 85 is a solid lens set... and all T1.5 or faster. Might want to make the 85 f1.4 a 105 or 135 instead to cover a wider and more evenly spaced range, but I don't think there are many >85mm lenses that are f1.4 or faster. The nice thing about the 50mm and 85mm are they are the most common and usually best designs and are available as fast as F1.2 (speed booster wont go any faster anyway), which means you could use 50 1.2 and 85 1.2 lenses that would double as 35 f0.9 and 60mm f0.9 lenses!

I'm a bit mentally challenged...So a:

FS700
Speed Booster adapter:

24mm T1.5 = full frame 17 T1.1
35mm T1.5 = full frame 25 T1.1
50mm T1.5 = full frame 35 T1.1
85mm T1.5 = full frame 60 T1.1

FS700
MB EF-->E adapter

24mm = 36mm
35mm = 52.5mm
50mm = 75mm
85mm = 127.5mm

? LOL

I think it's more like this.

FS700
Speed Booster adapter:

24mm T1.5/36mm crop1.5 = full frame 24 T1.1
35mm T1.5/52.5mm crop1.5 = full frame 35 T1.1
50mm T1.5/75mm crop1.5 = full frame 50 T1.1
85mm T1.5/127.5mm crop1.5 = full frame 85 T1.1

FS700 crop 1.5
MB EF-->E adapter

24mm = 36mm
35mm = 52.5mm
50mm = 75mm
85mm = 127.5mm

I'm really confused now...on the fs700

Wouldn't a 24mm T1.5 w/ speed-booster adapter become 17mm @ 1.1? or would it simply (because of the crop factor) be 24mm @ T1.1

If this thing does give you full frame equivalent and 1 stop, I think I am going to permanently weld the canon 24-105 on my fs700 for doc work! LOL

Hah you seem confused, just look at the numbers I listed in the post you quoted :P

Forget about format sizes and crop factors, just remember a 0.71x focal reducer will change actual focal length and aperture by a factor of 0.71x, just multiply by that number, its much simpler than you think.

i wonder if it's possible to do an EF to EFS adapter. its apparent that the glass in the E mount version allowed them to shorten the flange distance, so it's certainly plausible that they could make a glass to lengthen the flange to work for EF to EFS

great piece of work. now imagine how incredible it would be if sony/canon/etc... put one of these elements into the ND rotation ;)

I see they've announced a bunch of other mounts, including CY which is fantastic news, must get on the list.

Now let me think, whilst this increases the speed of the lens it will actually increase the DOF amount visually won't it. So whilst a 50mm becomes a fast 35, the DOF characteristics are still of a 50mm but scaled down. So actually there would be more apparent DOF, not less because the fov is wider but the DOF characteristics are the same.

I'm pretty sure that's the case.

Even so, great tool. Very much looking forward to checking it out

thanks
Paul

That was quick, just got a notice that my adapter shipped! Maybe I'll have it for the job I doing on my FS700 next week.

Exciting news! So, a quick summary of the pros and cons? (as I understand them):

Pros: full-frame focal lengths on a Super 35 sensor, gaining an additional stop light, increased center sharpness

Cons: decreased edge sharpness , increase in apparent DOF may take some time to get used to.

Am I missing anything?

People are stating it in a very confusing way.

This adapter makes it so the lens is at its true focal length, aka full frame. So a 24mm with with adapter has the FOV of a 24mm on full frame but the speed is boosted to 1.1 from 1.5. People are saying "the 24mm turns into a 17mm" meaning if they put a 17mm on their camera without the speed booster, it would look the same as the 24mm with the speed booster.

So, the new adapter 24mm = 24mm and 50mm = 50mm. Hope that helped.

yes and yes :dankk2:

Yes.

Marketing puts it a different way, but this is the proper explanation.

The adapter most certainly changes the effective focal length of the system so this is incorrect. The lens FL actually is changed with it. So no- 50mm lens is not a 50mm on the adapter anymore...
