Matting for 235:1

Hi all,

just wondering if there is a way to set up the viewfinder for this aspect ratio?

{ I guess a matte box does that right? Well I dont really want to go to
that extent. Just keep the camera light and run and gun. }

I know one can crop in post, obviously, but semi transparent bars in shooting
would be great.

Apologies if it's obvious, or already been gone over, I'm still a beginner with this
cam.

thanks

You measure the area and use tape to letterbox the LCD.

BTW, I can't even imagine how wide 235:1 is... :)

Actually the best way is to make a test chart large enough to shoot on a flat blank wall at a distance that is far back enough to cover minimum focus on your chosen lens. Then mark your monitors accordingly, and also frame carefully so that you leave room for some margin of error. It's not a perfect system, but you will be grateful for the ability to make slight adjustments in post anyway.

thanks. I guess you mean some sort of tape marks on a monitor? okay

I guess theres no way to mark the camera lcd readout? Maybe in magic lantern I hope.

Yeah, I think latitude to adjust in post really helps.

a screen 25 feet tall and about 1 mile wide. i bet that's one crazy expensive anamorphic lens!

yeah, but maybe congress will pay for it. Ill shoot a documentary on
health care! " a line of 1 million people east - to west, as far as the eye
can see are now covered! "

thanks, i guess your serious here.

How do you measure the area exactly?

What type of tape on the lcd? I would prefer semi transparent, { so you can see mic booms, etc }

and a type of tape that wouldnt make a permanent mess!

you can pretty much calculate it if you think about it.

The LCD is exactly 6cm wide thus

2.35/1 = 6/x

x is roughly 2.55. The screen is 4.5 cm tall, 4.5-2.55 = 1.95cm ( divide by 2 = .975 )

so measure roughly 1 cm from the top and bottom of the screen, matte off that section and you're done.

MIND YOU

2.35:1 has been dead for some time and has been replaced, i believe, by 2.40:1

with 2.40, it's exactly 1cm from top and bottom ( of black lcd screen border )

k, thanks.

but in the end, that's still roughly 1cm. give it a shot and see what happens.

I did this once with my HV20 but:

I shot my computer screen. I made sure the camera lined up perfectly with my monitor and had a window in Sony Vegas opened. In Vegas I had a perfect 1920x800 screen in view on my monitor. I took a snapshot of it. I then had the snapshot on my camera's screen and put black tape on the top and bottom of the LCD (where it was letter boxed. Then WALA...I had the correct aspect ratio to shoot with. This is just a quick and dirty way of doing it.

thanks Ian-t.

SOUNDS like you used electrical tape. I never tried this on my hv20.

I really prefer a semi transparent tape though.
