Matt Sconce- Stricken

Jack's the main man for this kind of thing. He's worked with adapters before too. I haven't... and I shoot with my Master Ped way high, not low, so don't listen to me :)

Do you have the Zombie Fest DVD?

Yeah I have the Zombie Fest DVD, but somebody has "borrowed it" which means I hope I get it back! I watched it all though. Thanks for the amazing tips! When you mean Master Ped way down, how far do you go without adding noise. I am shooting with mine at -7. Also, with the adapter in Bonehand, what were your detail levels, V detail, and Detail coring set at? Thanks so much Jack!

Do you shoot with it high to help CCing in AVID? Thanks for the help!

I suppose you could say that. I like to preserve as much detail in every part of the image (including dark spots) as possible, and then crush the blacks in post. Most of my definition work is in post... When looking at my raw footage it looks pretty flat (though the actors are generally standing out from the BG)

Here are some more filter tests. Which one do you think works for a horror short and why? They are some of the looks I am considering for several of the shots in Stricken. Thanks in advance!!!

well the second seems more blade runnerish...i like the last one as well but I think the third one works best..it also depends what kind of horror movie you re going to be using it in.....

It will be in a horror movie about a woman who thinks she is being haunted by her dead father...or is she losing her mind? That is the premise. I am starting to lean toward the third one as well, but I am torn. I really like the look of the second too. Hmmmm.

You know...filters and generally the colors you use...should (or so they say) portray certain things. Look 'eyes wide shut' for example. The blue and red are used so well to portray things like jealousy etc. You can also use different filters during the movie depending on what you want to show...for example...the character is living a dream..change the filter....or....the character is having a mental breakdown....So what I'm saying is that you can use a neutral filter for the whole movie and experiment with others in various places (but it's a 6' project so you might not have all that time to move from one filter to the other).

But as for the second one...it's very 'strong'. So if you use it then have in mind that a filter like that clearly puts the viewer in a certain kind of mood. While filters like the third...may put you in a certain mood but you are not hang up on the image but stay focused in the story (the image/filter works subconsciously).

I hope all of the above made some sense :)

Whew! Finally finished my shot list. I am concerned about two shots in particular. The mirror effects scene I have to do and the rain scene. We will see how they go. We shoot on the 18th.

I personally like the third one. But the second one gives more of that empty cold horror feel. It's starting to grow on me as well. Just my 2 cents.

Here is another test screenshot, attempting to get the right feel with lighting. I used more light in this test and clicked the ND filter on.
What do you think?

Gee, Matt. I appreciate what you're trying to do. But it's absolutely impossible to answer you question without the context in which the grabs are taken. And unfortunately that might go beyond the rules. And even if it didn't, I can't imagine someone wanting to "give away" that information. :undecided

But to answer which looks better, just on a visual level, regardless of intent, I'd have to say I like shot 1 and 4 about equally. Of course, those images may not gel with the mood you're trying to create.

Blaine, I am not in the competition. I am entering for fun and my project will probably be over 20 min. I will probably enter a short bit for people to watch. Thank you for letting my know which had the best value visually. That is what I am trying to figure out. As for people not wanting to "give away" info, I do not want to pressure anyone, I simply want to make my movie the best it can be for festivals and such and I really value all of your opinions. Since I am not in the contest, here is the context. (A little girl has just walked down the hall wondering where her daddy is. She opens the bathroom door to find him disposing of a body that is in the bath tub He is insane. He lunges at her. She is wearing a very innocent bright outfit. The father is in a black cloak and the scene is gory and juxtaposed to the sweet girl. It is the event that shapes the girls future.) I hope that helps a bit. Thanx everyone!

In that case, I think I'd definitely go for #4. I think the coloring that one will play better with her white dress and the red of the gore. Just my opinion, though. :)

Way to go. See the way the noise fell off when you get more information to the sensors ... Also there is just more dynamic range in these than the other shots which had kind of a middle to dark range.

that's also why I like #1 the best ... there's the most variation from the brightest bright to the darkest dark and eve some good chroma varation in the skin with the pink creeping in.

My second choice would be #4.

I love those two tests also. I guess it will depend on the scene. I want to make sure that I don't change so much that my CC becomes the focus. I want to be consistent in the feel of the movie....hmmm.... Now I am deciding on the knife for the killer. I like the reflection the Chef's knife gives me, but the raw, rough metal and shape of the handmade knife is pretty cool and original....Here are the knives up for the Killer's weapon.

I appreciate the support and insight you guys give me. I am nervous about the shooting dates, as I want everything to go perfect after this much preproduction and the actors being so excited. I will keep you updated.
