Matt Sconce- Stricken

Well, I receive the completed score in two days. This was my first time working with a composer and I have to say it has been awesome. I look forward to seeing what Leo puts together and I love that the score is timed to the action in the movie!

Just thought I would post grabs one more time as some might not have seen them and it is almost contest time.....Enjoy

Matt, Larry_R just pointed me to your thread, and I don't know quite how to say this, but the grabs suck.

HA! Just kidding, these are nothing short of incredible! I've not looked at any of the other pages other than the first & last, but I'm sure the feedback has got to have been fantastic ... if not, theyr'e just jealous. :)

Framing, lighting, quality of the images in general ... top rate stuff! Nice, NICE work my friend.

REALLY looking forward to seeing this one now ... among my top 5 of must see films.

First time?! Oh, you're going to be hooked now. :) It's amazing how much more a tailored score improves a project ... it can take what you like & make it bareable, or it can take what you already think is great & send it right through the roof.

Leo's a pro too ... I hope to use him eventually for one of our projects ... nothing short of professional to communicate with, and has does top quality work.

Thanks! That means alot as I respect the work you did on Sparrow so much. I hope to go down that road soon with this as a feature.

(Every one please enjoy the grabs above.)

Hey Matt, what do you cut with, and mind sharing how you achieved the look in that grab & others?

I probably should have read through the thread to find out, but why is this exhibition only? Looks like a DVX with possibly a letus Flip on it?

Sure, I am all about sharing the knowledge! Oh, and I cannot compete for two reasons. First, my movie is 10 minutes long (15 with credits) and I simply needed it to be that way, for film festivals and for the story, and secondly, i have been promoting like crazy from my website to build a following for its release after October 31st.

Okay, here it goes!!!!

First I shot with a DVX100b with a M2 adapter with one 50mm Nikon lens.
My camera setting were detail at +5, V detail at +5, Detail coring at +7, Color temp -3, Master Ped about -10 or -7 can't remember. Everything else was stock F5 scene setting.

I attempt to pump light into the scene first. This has the first ND filter on. Two 1000 watt lights are lighting Stephanie and one 1000 watt is in the hall lighting Ken. I import the footage with a 2:3 pulldown into Premiere Pro 2 into a 24fps timeline, take off Frame Blend and then flip the image.

Here is the raw grab:

I then applied Magic Bullet 2 Filter Coolish and adjusted it to my liking.

I also applied exposure and brightness and lowered them to create a dark atmosphere.

Adjusted Grab:

I then exported the file clip as an Uncompressed Filmstrip file and imported it to After Effects 7 Pro. I added a remove grain filter. Usually the removal number was set to 1, but in this case I turned on Temporal filtering since there was no large movement. I then exported the clip as an Uncompressed Avi.

See noise removal Tutorial on main page:

I imported it back into Premiere Pro 2 and set it above the original clip, so I could always go back to the original if need be.

Final Edited Grab:

My framing develops from storyboards, my creative eye, studying and what feels right.

I hope this helped!

Impressive post work. I will be playing with AE's remove grain filter asap. Looking forward to seeing your entry... looking great.

The filter definitely helps a ton, but make sure you do not use temporal filtering if the scene has movement. Just use normal noise reduction so things do not get crazy! Try the temporal on a moving shot and discover the craziness!

If you have not seen my visual walkthrough of my process from filming to final, scroll up.

WOW!!!! That noise removal from AE is INSANELY beautiful. Vegas (what I cut in) has a plug-in you can get called Dynamic Noise Removal, from a guy named Mike Crash ... but it doesn't perform NEARLY as well.

Also, perhaps I should see if there's an adjustment about the temporal thing you're mentioning, as I did notice that it would spontaniously create a crazy frame from time to time, as it looks like it picks up data from one frame & dumps it on the next, etc. ... but I swear I even noticed that if there wasn't a ton of movement too.

Could you post a grab, like the above, where there's a LOT of movement? I'd like to see the difference in grain.

Thanks for sharing that, Matt! Giving your thread a 5 star rating now, just because it's the helpful kind of thread, not just a "My film's going to be the best" kind of thread.

Sure! I am glad that this is helpful!

Here is another set. This scene had Actor motion and camera motion at the same time.

Raw:

Color CC with Magic Bullet 2 and tweaked to the way I liked it:

Exported as Uncompressed Filmstrip from Premiere Pro 2 and imported into AE Pro 7. Remove Grain, applied. Set at about 1. Exported as Uncompressed AVI and sent back to Premiere Pro 2:

Check out the amazing difference in the jacket!

Hope you like and I hope it helps......by the way...this is a grab DVXuser has never seen before.....this tutorial was its premiere!
