Manual Control firmware Updates: An Email over at ProLost

Yo kholi, clear this up for me pls. U mention cams like the d90 and 5dmkII don't support HDMI live but papa just asked if u could monitor via hdmi while filming and you say it could (at least on your d90). I'm obviously missing something here. Do u simply mean it can but not without OSD off? Clue me in!

So ur guess is the 5dmkII would follow suit with such a firmware update? That would make my gh1 decision tougher. Ooohhh the tradeoffs...... Whatever, I'll wait to see what happens..... And wait your footage Monday.

I played with the 5D Mark II at NAB. It certainly was a leap ahead of the D90 to say the least. Less noise, incredibly sharper images, and much more aesthetically pleasing bokeh performance (ie. full frame). It certainly had a lot going for it, that is until the Canon reps started making fun of me or something because I asked about 24p. "We talked to a lot of people and asked them why they wanted 24p. Turns out most of them DIDN'T EVEN NEED 24P! In fact, 24p caused a lot of problems for them. But hey, I want 78p on my Mark II.-- (Other guy) 'How about 90p?'-- Yeah!"........ Really what the two Canon reps said to me and I don't know if they were jerks, idiots, or both! >=(

probably trying to cover their products faults as if canon purposely left out 24p cause it was unnecessary instead of just a mistake?

Wow, that's pretty audacious of them as reps.... You should have said "How about 20p? Oh wait, you already did that..."

But yeah, jerk reps or not, if the 5d gets manual controls (and god forbid 24p which causes lots of problems) then the 5dmkII would be a no brainer. Wishful thinking til it happens.

Live HDMI is referring to a signal output directly from the sensor, uncompressed. HDMI works on all of the cameras, whether or not it's uncompressed on the GH-1 is what we're all waiting to see. If it's an uncompressed HDMI signal (1080/24 4:4:4 or 720/60 4:4:4 ) then we can start concocting ways to acquire in other codecs.

Also, Canon DOES have a Firmware update. It's just a matter of when they'll release it. Then it's up to the user to decide, because every single iteration of the VDSLR that we have available is different. Don't think that Sony isn't watching, either.

As far as I know, Sony's DSLR is the only one with an Image Stabilization built into the actual body. And they gave you Live HDMI out of the SR11 Camcorder, whether by accident or not we don't know. Food for thought.

it'a almost identical. the lcd is smaller 2.7" but swivels. there are less external knobs and displays but other than that it is essentially a D90 brain.

no the 4/3 and micro 4/3 design allows you to connect almost any lens with a suitable adapter. you won't get any auto controls though

you can't mount a canon lens to a nikon for example

But don't you then run into all sorts of curious field-of-view dilemmas?

I mean, I guess the statement makes sense if you're talking about the ratio of Nikon Lenses to All Lenses In The Universe. But it's pretty hard to imagine the customer who's not satisfied by some lens in the vast, 20+ year Nikon line. Whereas the spread of native Micro 4/3 lenses is extremely limited.

However, I do get excited when I see stuff like an adapter to mount Leica M lenses on Micro 4/3.

sure there's plenty of great lenses for nikon f mount. but here's an example- I've been looking for a 15/16mm full frame fisheye. The sigma 15mm sells for between 700-900. The nikon 16mm for not much less. I picked up a sigma 15mm on ebay yesterday with a minolta mount for $130. I can get a cheap 4/3 adapter for it. So the beauty of the GH1 is there is a world of lenses for it and a lot of them can be had really cheap unlike most nikon f mount lenses.

the field of view of the GH1 is 1.17x horizontal crop compared to a 35mm motion picture camera

What's a "curious field of view problem"? It will be narrower and while that can be a problem i wouldn't consider it curious. It's like using an fx lens on a dx camera.

I don't know, the GH1 footage so far makes me wanna sell my D90 this May, along with my Canon Xti, and my Sony HC1... Gonna sell all my lenses too and just get 1 or 2 wide bright lenses.

Unless of course, this firmware update comes sooner than I expect.
Besides manual control of ISO and shutter, I really want that GH1's 720/60p for slow motion shots.

Nikon, if you're listening, you gotta hurry up.

Nikon, if you're listening, you gotta hurry up.

LOL. Keep in mind that Nikon's market is 99.9% Journalism and video was intended for this market, not Indie film makers who demand more critical features. It will come in time, but not anytime soon. Cheers
