Manual Control firmware Updates: An Email over at ProLost

Nearly everything wrong with the D90 can be fixed by firmware. Jello wobble, skew, and the overheating issues are about the only things that can't be fixed by software. Manual controls over everything within D-movie mode, including compression and ISO, can be enabled only if Nikon allows it.

even making the d90 1080p? It would not make any sense to make any changes to the camera via firmware if they planning to come out with a d400 or what have you...but then again, i don't know how Nikon has been in the past with firmwares.....

The lack of 1080P isn't necessarily a flaw. However, yes, I do think Nikon could get rid of the stairstepping issue in-camera but the post fixes that are out now do that pretty well now with a one-click fix usually. Right now, I would rather have the D90 give me consistently perfect looking images that I can adjust myself. 1080P can come with the next camera.

Guys,

This morning I woke up, like every morning
I checked the firmware page of Nikon, like every morning
There was no update, like every morning.

I just… want to cry all the time
I can’t eat or sleep… When I take my D90 with me and we go for having some fun,
I take some videos and he’s like:
“Why did you adopt me? I don’t deserve you”

And he’s right. My friend adopted a Canon EOS, the last one, kind of cheap stuff, well compared to the D90, the pictures are not as good.
But the videos… Man the videos… OK in 720p it is 30fps but man, it looks great, beautiful.
I am so depressed. Why did I choose NIKON? Now I have 8 lens from NIKON, I can’t move to CANON.
I want to, but I can’t. It’s like if I got married with the wrong girl. The girl who promised me a lot of things before the wedding, and the ugly girl I didn’t want to go with, now she’s doing all those stuffs with my friends.

I AM JEALOUS !!
WHY? WHY IS LIFE SO UNFAIR???

Do you really think a firmware is coming up?? I think it is all a big joke, organized by stupid people who just want to live through their lies!
NIKON launched this D5000 for nothing. No improvement in video. I think they just don’t care.
I think they just have a team of people in Japan who just suck. Sorry guys.

Personnaly, I live in Tokyo.
Is there something I can do ? Is there a way to ask them any questions? (I speak Japanese)

GUYS !! HELP ME!

Do you think the D400 with 1080p videos will ever come out?
Do you think NIKON is going to stick with this UGLY MJPEG CODEC?
WHY ??

WHY NIKON SUCKS ???

my usual response to this is that if you don't get fantastic results with the d90 you simply haven't got what it takes. lack of talent is hardly nikon's fault. blame your parents. :-)

Actually, you are perfectly right. I might not have your talent.
But look at my friend who has the canon, he doesn't have talent either, but his videos look better than mine. Do you really think Nikon will do something about the video or they will stick with this technology...

I wonder...

i didn't say that. sorry if that's how it came across. for all i know you could be extremely talented. what i mean is i think you should focus on what you can do with the camera instead. it has beautilful dof, it lets you use your nikkor lenses, and so on. if you had the canon you would probably be just as frustrated by other things. great cameras will come, for now all of them have plenty of problems that we just learn to live with.

I'm with Matt on this. I had a realization about the D90 this weekend. A friend of mine has an Arriflex 16S late 60's vintage. For a long time I've been trying to buy it from him but he won't give it up. There's not much different in the footage from the Arri 16S and a D90 and they both have no sound and a limited time for shooting. One runs out of film and the other over heats. So I've starting looking at my D90 as my Arri I never had and it cost a lot less to operate.

If Nikon fixed the D90 image with a firmware update it might lose the "Special feel" that it has now.

You should protest out in front of Nikon HQ. :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

But for real, don't feel bad investing in Nikon. They are a good camera company with good resell value, if you ever had to turn everything around. Give it some time, if they don't release anything progressive in video in a 3 year time span, then start to panic.

But as of right now, just give it till the next generation.

But, I do think manual controls is not alot to ask for. :) That's the only thing I really care about. As I'm trying to learn and better understand exposure when it relates to moving images, thus exposure lock does not really allow me to practice theory in the way that I would like to.

Thank you all for your answer.

You might be right.

I am waiting for the D400. The real one. The real... Please god. Help us.

Actually I don't really have my hopes up for the D400.

I think the generation after that will be the true indicator of where Nikon places video in their future.

You can use your nikon lenses on the 5D or the GH1 with an adapter. The 5D causes the same headaches as the D90 though.

I sold my D90, now it's a toss up between the GH1 the D400 and maybe even the pentax k-7. some guy is even hacking the 5DMKII firmware.

Oh and Matt I got an isco-54 :2vrolijk_08:

Nikonslave, your post made me laugh. Not at you, but at me because I quite often feel the same way. I, too, check the stupid Nikon firmware page every day in hopes that there will be a new update that will give the D90 a better picture or some manual controls.

But I'm trying to accept the camera for what it is. It does make for some nice home movies of my kids, and I can't complain about that.

Feeling your pain,

joel

nice. i've been looking for one for my beaulieu super 8 camera but never thought of using one with video. sounds like a great plan. 2.66:1, right? nice ratio. you have to constantly focus both lenses though, don't you?

oh, and i'm quite seriously thinking of moving to australia in january, for six months or so then we'll see, a good idea? where do i go if i want a nice but not too hot climate, maybe some film industry, and surf? my wife has a bunch of cousins in queensland but that sounds too hot and humid for a yeti like myself.

I found you mentioning one on a film forum years ago. you just set your prime to infinity focus and focus with the isco. I've been doing my homework and the 54 appears to be the best. yeah something like 2.66 but I'll crop to 2.39:1.

sydney is where the action is, fox studios, good surf, plenty of sharks, not as hot as queensland. keep me posted. I don't surf but I snowboard. I'm spending most of my time in the GH1 dungeon.

cool. i would be careful because of the short dof. in super 8 it's usually not a problem.

Yo Matt, come to Melbourne. I'm here for a semester of video art, loving it!
Melbourne is like the art capital of Australia. Lots of cool places to film around here too.
