1DC: Magic Lantern

Who would be interested in the above collaboration?

I feel like Canon has given up on the camera so would be exciting to see what ML could unleash on it. 4k RAW anyone?

Magic Lantern on the 1DC would be a dream. Oh, well One of the best things Canon could have done for 1DC owners is to open up the firmware for outside development since Canon decided to stop supporting firmware development on their end. Even if the 1DC was an open platform, the Magic Lantern team would not have developed for it since it is too expensive and the user base is too small.

From my own perspective, I would loan out my camera and pay good money if I could end up with a working port of ML on the 1DC. 4K RAW I am pretty sure is impossible, but all of the rest of ML features would make the camera far more valuable for my work.

There's a way to hack the camera without a firmware file, it's just a matter of whether they are willing to do it or not.

Canon has not 'given up' per se, they know that the camera is defective (see the last post on my other thread) and they just try to push it under the carpet - something that is not really possible. The only thing ML needs to do is to make a firmware with a hot pixel remapping function - in order to save all the 1DC units out there and their unsuspecting owners from the problem which probably every 1DC unit has. So sad.

what about C100? its cheap now, especially version I , or what about C300? would be a blessing to get an extra features now!!!

4K Raw is over 1 TB/hr and 1D C would need CF 2.0 cards for that or some sort of a parallel recording to its two CF cards simultaneously. Or it'll need compressed Raw, which will probably be too taxing for its Digic5+ processors. It's very complicated and costly, so one might as well wait until some sort of a video geared 5D model is out.

current and older 5D does work with ML, u wanna say they have better processors then 1D C and or c100/300? i am not familiar with how does that ML work, and dont know anything about it. but at least C100/c300 have cooling, not sure if 1D C has it. all of them have 2 card slots, not sure about 4k, but would be great to get 1080p raw for example... or anything higher then 8bit, internal or external....

The bottleneck in RAW recording is write speed on writing to the cf cards. The 1DC is probably limited to the same framerate and resolution as the 5D if RAW video recording was ever added. As it is, the motion jpeg recording is pushing the ability of the CF card.

1080p Raw is one thing but 4K Raw requires much faster cards and card/media compatibility and I doubt that 1D C can handle it for the internal recording.

Plus, as has been mentioned, the number of 1D C units out in the wild must be minuscule visavis 5D MK III, which has been one of the most popular pro cameras ever.

In any case, cheers to Jurmala.

In 1080p, probably. In 4K, hard to tell.

It does record at 500 Mpbs for JPEG 2000 files. The question is, how much room is left for the ~ 3.3 Gbps 4K Raw? I doubt there's enough bandwidth for that.

PS. 5D MK III ML Raw 1080p takes up ~ 320 GB/hr, so 4K will require ~ 1.2 TB/Hr. That looks like too much data for the CF cards or the provided interface to handle.

The write buffer on 1D C/1D X is much bigger than 5D3 (more than double I believe), it handles full 5K 12fps burst for about 4-5 sec (with UDMA7 card), that's for stills with ~20MB a frame.

So my wild guess is 1D C totally can handle continuous full 4K raw (4096x2160) @24fps for a short but enough period of time. for longer takes maybe 2.8K.

Is purely a data rate problem, 1080 raw data rate is less than that of the 4k basic file size of 1DC. While the data file size of 4K basic have reached the limit of CF card already. Similarly 4K raw via the current HDMI port are also not possible for similar physical reason.

1080 raw is already available via the HDMI port but not internally, I agree is technically possible though.

Wish they can offer a $500-1000 pay upgrade to change the current HDMI to HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 so there can be external 4K raw. I guess asking them to update the CF card slots to CFast is not too feasible

Raw has never been available through HDMI, HDMI only carries a ''video'' debayered signal, you need HDSDI for raw, plus a raw recorder (only SDI too).

The 1DC HDMI signal is compressed, it has a bit depth of 8bit and 4:2:2 chroma subsampling, just like the internal compressed codec, while the raw signal would be 14bit 4:4:4 as on the 5D mk III raw hack.

Companies compress the the image before they go out of the HDMI port for some reason yet still call it uncompressed, if the sensor is 14bit 4:4:4, then an 8bit 4:2:2 signal is compressed and especially when it looks identical to the internal H.264 compressed images.

I think it's because sending a higher data rate to the HDMI that's different from the internal compression would take much more processing power, that's why the entire pipeline is in 8bit 4:2:2, if they create another 10-12bit pipe for HDMI alone it would need power.

For example, on the Panasonic GH4 (4 years later on from the 1DC), when you set the HDMI to output a 10bit signal, the camera locks up recording internally and gets pretty hot very shortly, so obviously it's not as easy as we think.

HDMI output from 5D3, 1DC IS uncompressed, it's debayered to 8bit 422, RAW from Magic Lantern is undebayered linear sensor data.

H264 codec has uncompressed (lossless) option, same for JPEG (lossless option). SDI port from Sony F35 outputs 12 bit Log uncompressed data (not linear raw).

so, uncompressed does not mean sensor linear RAW.

Canon has essentially signalled to the ML guys that they won't go after them for any DMCA-like bullshit, if they leave the upper level Pro-cameras alone, like the 1DC and 1DX, possibly the C100 and C300.

Pretty bad given they can't upgrade it themselves and seems like they are trying to forget it exists. It should be an open competition 'who can upgrade this camera?' have a go :)
