Magic Lantern progress on the Canon 7D

Once ML is up and running on your camera (5DII or 7D), feel free to thank Tramm by making a donation via the link on the Magic Lantern Wiki page.

It's just a good thing to do.

I don't have a clue what this video means. Can someone translate if Magic Lantern is close to being ready for the 7d.

It means that he passed the first step which he could load the software to boot in the 7D... there are more to come...

I was just wondering, if Magic Latern disables AGC, would it be somewhat unwise to drop a lot of cash on a Zoom H4N (guessing/estimating that Magic Latern is about 3 months away from being released)? I mean, I know the H4N is a good audio recorder regardless, but it seems like most people are using the Zoom H4N to get around the AGC problem. If AGC didn't exist, I wonder if people would be looking at the H4N as their external mic of choice...

I wouldn't say it's "unwise," it just depends on your needs. A separate audio recorder with XLR inputs will always give you better sound and more flexibility in microphone placement. For narrative work or interviews, this is key. For docu-style shooting, a separate recorder is nice, but may be less necessary thanks to ML.

Look at what you'll be shooting and choose accordingly.

Nah, I agree. I think a seperate recorder with XLR inputs is a wise choice - regardless of AGC being disabled by Magic Latern or not. I'm just being really tight with money, that's all hehe :)

If ML does come for the 7D, the Juicelinked pre-amp is the right device. It gives you the XLR's and 12db more range than the Beachtek for instance.

The H4N is however eminently useful. Many people just leave it rolling between takes because the audio file takes so little space. They use Pluraleyes for quick sync in post and just cut away the dead stuff. I think it is a really handy tool to have because even your lav's or an addittional off camera microphone can be pumped into it, leaving the camera to not be weighed down by a bunch of stuff hanging off of it. Again Pluraleyes then facilitates that. You won't stop using it when ML comes in my opinion. Then again a good sound man would make all of this stuff redundant...

This means that some of the most frustrating, cumbersome work of getting firmware to load on the 7D is now essentially done, and the faster, more interesting process of porting the magic lantern software and features to the camera can begin now.

THANK YOU Trammel, I can't tell you how excited I am for this.

No, not at all. Besides what everyone mentions above, it's massively useful to be able to just grab wild lines or foley noises after a shot or even during post. In production you want nice clean dialog that'll be easy to edit but afterwards you're always looking for little things to flesh out the soundtrack...clothing rustles, tiny creaks when someone sits in a chair or little creaks from door hinges, otherwise you end up with a TV feeling where the dialog just hangs in empty space instead of putting you 'in the world'.

I can't stress enough how handy it is to have a complete recorder that fits in your pocket - the compact size and the onboard microphones on the Zoom are pure win. I have several thousand dollar's worth of pro mics but I don't normally want to carry a boom pole, shock mount, expensive mic and 20 foot cable around, whereas the Zoom fits in a pocket and sounds fine for simple stuff.

The great thing is now people like me who hate syncing in post can run their H4n directly into the 7D with the pinknoise cable and not worry about the AGC messing it up... I can now have the H$n as a great onboard mic or use it as a way to patch my XLR mic's directly to the 7D

Wait..so what you're saying Perry is that with this pinknoise cable, you can essentially use the H4n as you would a beachtek or juicedlink in that you would be getting a balanced audio signal from your H4n and into your 7D, over riding the AGC?

The cable doesn't disable the AGC, only the forthcoming ML will do that.

The cable just drops the level by -25db with a resistor.
