Magic Lantern for 60D In Progress

Ok Im Pissed now.. If they get the 60d done and not the 7d Im going to Hire my own Sofware Guru.. naw Better yet Just get 5d.. man..... is it because the 7d has dual processors????

No.

It's because Canon has managed to block Tram from continuing development using his own 7D. In a firmware update they included an upgrade "counter" and a top limit on the number of times firmware can be upgraded. Since each time Tram would make a programming change he would have to update the firmware to try it out and after a while he hit the maximum limit.

The camera still functions, I've heard, he just cannot update it anymore nor can he go back so his camera is essentially stuck with the last modification he made.

I don't think there is any sending it to Canon for "repair", they'll know pretty quick what is wrong and why and I imagine they will be rather unsympathetic.

This is one reason I've been reluctant to try ML on my T2i so far because I'm sure Canon has done something similar with the last firmware update for it. Panasonic stopped shipment of GH1's long enough to insure the firmware on that model included code to prevent "unauthorized" changes and I'm sure the GH2 didn't even begin to ship without the same protection.

None of the major manufacturers want anyone "monkeying" with their firmware codes.

As I understand from what I've read ML for the T2i only requires a one time modification to the firmware code and most of us should not run up against any upgrade counter problem, since subsequent ML updates only require replacing a file or two on the SDHC card.

So I may give it a try on my T2i (if I get "brave" enough).

So he would need a donation of 7d's constantly to keep the project going? What's the deal? If they can't do it with the 7d can we put out an official thread stating that? I have a 7d and I am waiting for ML on it. If I would have known they were to fail I would have never purchased it. Now I feel like a dumb#ss for buying one. If they could get ML on it to work then it would be worth it. I'm literally about to give up on them though and sell the darn thing for a T2i. Seriously, if they can't do it can DVX just announce it officially so people like me don't waste their money on the 7d for false hope of one day having ML?

draven4, you sound impolite. People like Tram and Alex spend their time, risk to break their cameras and moreover, they share their findings with the rest of us. It would be better to thank them. They owe us nothing, neither software updates nor explanations of any sort. I also bought 60D with a hope, that one day maybe ML will be ported to it. However, I was aware that there is a big chance that it will never happen. We'd better encourage all the developers and support them the way we can.

+1 Buying a piece of gear for a potential hack isn't the developer's fault, the 7d is capable without that hack. I don't think anyone is in any position to expect anything, the developers are not obliged to you or to canon.

Meant no disrespect to the developers. All I'm saying is if they can't do it can we just officially announce it? If I would have saw a thread post on top that said "7d not ML hackable" I would not have bought it. Money saved.

I do thank their efforts though and appreciate it big time. I'm about to sell my 7d after a year for a T2i. My frustration is with Canon. In my opinion they do not listen to their customers very well. They seem to scatter what everybody wants over multiple versions of a camera giving us some of the goodness here and there.

They just need to combine
1) full frame
2) manual audio levels
3) add the magic lantern abilities
4) nice build on the body
5) swingable LCD monitor

We've seen that is all possible, just give us that Canon.

Lastly I know that my 7d is still capable of so much, I was not debating that.

I think that having Magic Lantern on the 60D would be great- I'd love an articulating screen, but rely too much on the feature set of ML to upgrade my 550D.

The thing is, as far as swivel screens go, I think the t3i with its video crop mode would make a far more interesting tool to have ML on. I understand that a lot of people already own 60Ds and have been waiting for this, but I really hope there is enough community interest to also warrant a T3i edition in the works as well!

The t3i would also benefit more from ML's features, also- Some of the features ML offers on the T2i already exists on the 60D (manual Kelvin, etc). The t3i has the potential to be the best option currently out of all the Canon DSLRs for video, but without ML it is missing some core functionality. I'd also think that the t3i is closer hardware and software-wise to the T2i, would would make porting it over simpler. But I'm just speculating and thinking out loud here.

Yes, if the T3i is the same as T2i/60D regarding firmware protection, ML should be ported with a minimal set of changes. Another possible problem is the amount of RAM available (which is also a problem on 60D). CHDK has the same problems with new cameras from the same series (more megapixels/features = less free RAM for third party software).

Some juicy details are here: http://groups.google.com/group/ml-devel/browse_thread/thread/3ff0c64174587800/

Right now I can't say if it can be ported or not, but we hope so.

So did I. Can't wait to see ML functional on the 60D.

@a1ex: Will development on the 60D ML continue no earlier than when the funding goal is reached?

This is awesome news! I recently upgraded to official Canon 1.0.9 - should I revert, or is that okay to proceed?

I had to revert to 1.0.8 and back, but a new installer for 1.0.9 should be available soon. Be very careful and don't run ML for another firmware version, you may brick the camera if you do!

I have a shooting tomorrow and seeing the audio levels would be very helpful!
i guess i should rather wait. what are your experiences with stability of 1.0.9, a1lex?
