T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

I'll try that next time I fire it up. I'm on the 3/13/11 build. Is there a new one? They've been coming out so fast!

Here's what the manual for the March 13 build says: "Monitoring-USB: ON/OFF Audio monitoring with headphones, via USB port. To use this feature, you may use a modified USB - RCA cable or a USB - jack adapter. See here for details. You have to plug the USB cable after ML is loaded. When audio monitor is enabled, it will disable USB, HDMI and maybe other functions, so if you don’t use this feature, leave it OFF."

Your situation is odd because the manual says that when you use the audio monitoring feature it disables the HDMI out. But I believe you're saying the HDMI out is working for you but the camera's LCD display does not work. Well, perhaps plugging in the USB cable after ML loads will solve the problem.

Well I'm not using HDMI, just the USB. I'm using an old IKan monitor that takes an RCA feed off of the supplied USB cable from the camera. So I'll try the unplugging / plugging technique. Thanks

Chadfish -- if you aren't running ML and you plug the USB A/V cable in, does the camera's LCD display stay on?

What are you talking about ? Most "I BROKE MY T2i BEWARE <crycry>" topics come from bitbucket anonymous posts, people dont check their cams and dont read manuals and mistakes happen, they arent even coming back if camera is working again normally but post about "bricked cam" stays.I dont know about bricked cam,so far all mistakes are on sides of lazy users who not bother to read manuals before installing and they delete magic lantern from card without removing bootflag.
To brick the cam you would need to write its startup sequence permanently which ML doesnt do,you remove card and there is not ML on cam. There is a way to lock the camera (if wrong addresses are set through firmware tho,but Alex keeps eye on this so suspicious and untested code isnt released, he knows what he's doing.
Biggest risk is for Alex, his camera is first one in line most of the time when testing new stuff.

Awesome! I figured it was something like that but 2 different stories hit around the same time and even though I love ML and have used it on many personal projects in the last month I have not used on paying gig yet. My plan so far is to leave 2 of my 10 cards stock and if I have any issues I can load them in. Wish me luck and thanks goes to Alex, you do great work man.

I'm not sure. I have ML and one card. I'd rather not take it off to check. But I did just try plugging in the USB after turning on the camera, and I do have audio, and I do have my LCD. So I'm stoked! If I choose to I can just put my Rode VideoMic Pro set to +20db boost, T2i analogue gain set to 10DB, and I have great sounding, very clean audio recording / monitoring. Pretty sweet.

If you have issues, you can just hold the shutter button half-pressed at startup, and the camera will load the stock firmware ;)

(it only works for March11 build and later)

Concerning preparing multiple cards: After having installed ML on one card, to get it on a 2nd card do I need to do something with the camera beyond just formatting? I've formatted the new card, made bootable, then copied the files from one card to the 2nd card.

What am I doing wrong?

Alex - Is there any way you could make a setting to allow exposure times over 30 seconds? I know there is bulb mode, but it would be cool to have a setting instead of using a watch to calculate the time to leave it open. Thanks!

That's exactly what you have to do. Sometimes the card tools may not give the confirmation correctly (especially older versions). I always format the card from the camera before making it bootable.

a1ex, do you reformat the card every time you finished working with it (and then making it bootable and copying the required files onto it) or you just erase the files and format the card every now and then ?

I only reformat the card when ML screws up the filesystem (it happens during experiments). I usually erase the files.

I'll try the process again. I did it, but then the camera just started up as if there was no ML. So I'll format in the camera, make bootable, and copy the contents from one card to the new card and hope.

I created a shell script which makes the card bootable, copies ML over onto it, copies my current config setup onto it and ejects the card. I'll gladly share it if anyone's interested. It will work under OSX and *nix (possibly requiring a small change to the mount/unmount command.)

You could add formatting of the card to the script too, I just tend to always do that in-camera to be safe.

Indeed, I like adapter cables too. But this one foot usb to 1/8" trs female cable is going for $40! The other cables are going for $20 to $30, which IMHO is already expensive. It seems to me the only reason that this is $40 is because it's new -- and there's no one else making them. I'll stick to the original USB cable and a $3 adapter at this point -- at least until the price on these comes down substantially. Any other opinions on the price of this cable?

I think we should instead send a small contribution to the ML development team in appreciation for their hard work and for further development on an initial final version of ML.

An informed comment (not an opinion) on the price of the cable. The reason this cable is relatively high priced is simply because of the cost to build the cable. The Canon USB AV out cable is a 6 pin proprietary cable. This 6 pin USB mini connector is not available from any other vendor. To build this cable the manufacturer has to first purchase the cables from Canon and then modify them.

I disagree. While this IS a proprietary connector, remember that Canon is NOT the only source of proprietary connectors in the world, and it never stopped cheap Chinese knockoff connectors on ebay in the past. If you look at the cell phone industry from a few years back (before everything was standardized ports like they are now) you had weird headphone ports from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, heck even Motorola and HTC had variations of USB plugs to allow their own headphones (not the same shape as Canons, but wider to allow more pins usually).
Yes, it meant they needed to create a special plug just for the adapter which adds to the cost, but it didn't keep cheap Chinese "HTC to 3.5mm" adapters on ebay going for a few bucks. They clearly copied the pin out and made a plug of their own. It is simply not cost effective to be buying them from Canon to modify, and I truly hope that's not what they are doing.

No my friends, this is expensive because it is EXCLUSIVE. No one else makes them yet, and they are new. The question is, will it get popular enough to warrant some cheap facility to start mass producing them?

Thanks but I'm on Win7

I'm interested.. :)

I too am interested!

Also, maybe this has been covered in the 99 pages previous, but is there a way to have the lcd on as normal but also have a monitor connected as well?

I can settle for whatever resolution the lcd is being mirrored on the monitor, its purely so on a shoot the director and crew can see what I'm filming without having to look over my shoulder at a tiny screen..

Lastly I just wanted to say cheers for this amazing firmware!
