T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

i agree, dishe, you can get decent audio with ml and the onboard mic. i also plug a sony stereo mic into the camera and get excellent audio. i do use a zoom h4, this gives me the most flexibility in post, i can use both tracks if i want, maybe just to add ambience...

Well, I don't actually use the onboard mic ever (when would you use that?), but I use a mic into the camera's jack all the time. I like to keep my setups as simple as possible to minimize setup and take down, so I was very thankful not to need an external recorder.

But... there was one shoot recently where I wasn't monitoring the audio and accidentally had the gain in camera set too high, resulting in overblown bits of talking.

The client didn't notice or care, so we went with it, but having a backup source of audio can be a good idea at times. Also, I'm not so sure that I'd fault the camera for that, since I very well could have made the same mistake with any sound recorder!

But this discussion is off topic, better suited for the Audio Thread:

Soren, Dishe,

I have tested out the audio in the T2i with ML, and it sounds good to me. I have not done extensive testing, but I have done the Rode VideoMic pro going through a JuicedLnk, as well as going straight into the camera and they sound pretty good. Also tested with an AT4053b going through the JL-DT454 and it sounds pretty good from my quick down and dirty test. The test was mostly just to make sure everything worked. I'l be switching out mics and mixers and putting up comparisons eventually.

One thing I HATE, and hopefully will change on the build soren has just posted, is that my audio settings in ML do not stay when I turn off the camera. Over and over I kept recording using the camera's internal mics because I turned off the camera to save battery. Ans since you can't monitor the camera, you can't tell. You see that there is signal now tithe the lovely level monitoring, but unless you touch the tip of the mic / and/or verify in the menu, you can easily make this mistake. Not cool.

Questions
• Anyone know if the new ML build holds your setting through a power down?
• How do I install a new build? Just replace the files on the card?

I didn't notice it. In my quick tests, setting mic to "int Left ext Right" or "ext stereo" is remembered between restarts (and audio meters confirm it's working).

is auto focus via shutter button during movie recording capable?
Yes, but it's not perfect. I prefer follow focus or manual focus.

Install new build... Copy all the new files over the old ones, that's it.

Don't erase your CFG file, that is the file that retains your settings upon power down.

You should be able to go to the appropriate tab under the ML menu screen and choose, "save config". That should save everything if I am not mistaken. It always has for me.

@Chadfish -- The older builds (I'm using Jan 30) require you to go to Debug and select Save Config to save the settings. The latest builds save the configuration settings automatically.

I have the latest build.
•*Just take everything in the folder and drop it on my card?

• I see that they have made a folder to hold the cropmark files rather than just having them at the root level. OK to just delete those i suppose?

The cropmarks need to be in the cropmarks folder on the newer builds. Yes, just delete the cropmarks in the root directory of the card. Actually, you only need to copy over the autoexec.bin file, as the only items needed in the root are that file and the magic.cfg file.

I actually don't think this discussion is off topic because it concerns ML. Some potentially new canon dslr owners will find themselves debating the audio merits of the t2i with ML verses the t3i or even 60d. If the simplicity of very acceptable in-camera audio is of importance, then a t2i with ML should not be overlooked, as even after a kind donation, one would still be saving over the other options.

Yes, that's why I started this thread:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?240822-The-Canon-DSLR-Audio-thread

At 87 pages and still counting, I don't expect any new potential canon DSLR owners to read this entire thread!

Alex -- The March 3 build appears to have a bug. When you turn off the histogram, part of the histogram and the prior reading stay on the screen. It won't clear using any methods I've found. Have you noticed this?

Actually, all ML builds have this bug. Until it's fixed, press MENU twice to force a redraw.

Cool. Got in in - works fine. And it keeps the settings! Right on! However, I have noticed that since I put in ML, the t2i, when starting a shooting session, the first movie I make automatically shuts off after 3 or 4 seconds, then subsequent movies work fine. Odd.

I now ordered my class 10 card and tried how much can it handle. With QScale -16, it stopped pretty much instantly. Same with -15, and then on -14 it kinda worked. But I guess it all depends on what you're shooting at, too.

Anyway, my question is, did I most likely buy a crappy card? Class 10 technically should handle -16, right? I ordered it off from ebay, an 8GB class 10 Transcend card. From what I heard, Transcend should be quite ok.

And I know, it's a small card for any decent shooting to begin with but I just wanted to try it out before investing more and buying a bigger card.

Hi Ragunaru, I myself use a Transcend class 10 Card (16 GB) and I was surprised, too, that its not possible to record with high qscale.

Then I disabled audio recording in the canon menu and it works just fine now. Without audio I can shoot at -15, with audio at max. -13

Best regards,
Dorian

Ah, this is genius! Thanks for that, Dorian, gonna try it out. I'm not gonna need audio for what I'm recording anyway, so it'll do for now. But I guess I have to get a better quality card at some point to be able to record audio, too.

I've been using the latedt Build (Mar 10) and it works pretty smooth. I'm loving the audio. Here's a test with my Rode VideoMic Pro, AGC defeated.
