T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

SvenL

Can you post screen shot of the split prism ?

I'm starting to get utterly frustrated from not being able to activate the feature that I initially requested for... :)

Furthermore, two things :

1) a1ex, I've noticed then Sven has his histogram off. should that effect the appearance of the Prism ?
2) the focus graph I talked about (appearing at all times) is exhibited in Sven's pictures (yellow rectangle)

Histogram does not affect the split screen (I have it on).

Focus graph is there because split screen is basically an alternate display of the same measurement (so whenever the focus graph indicates almost max value, there is no split). It will be removed when I'll make a fully fledged build (with docs, help text... etc).

Split effect is best noticed when focusing on some vertical objects (it's always horizontal).

And that is the answer to my problem... :)

Magic Zoom window was too small and somehow I aimed at horizontal surfaces instead of vertical and/or diagonal.... and wasn't paying attention to the detail (the splits).

AWESOME WORK...

BTW

Sometime it seems as if the splits are converging even though perfect focus was not entirely achieved.
Is this what you referred as :

The problem: this trick only works when you rotate the focus ring and cross the perfect focus point

Right, if you stop turning the ring, the split will go back to 0. In theory, it's only accurate a few seconds after you crossed the focus point.

OK

Let me throw another Sci-Fi idea that popped into my head and personally bothers me a bit lately :

Is there a way to choose one picture style for display but use another one for actual recording ?

This is on behalf all those (myself included) who wants to record footages using CineStyle but find it difficult to evaluate color\sharpness.

I don't shoot ultra flat, but for people with clients or who always need to have as much DR as possible, it could be awesome!
(not just for focusing, but for lighting too: shane hurlbut uses two different picture styles, neutral for lighting, then technicolor for shooting; he says trying to light with an ultra flat picture style leads to chronicly underexposing)

maybe using a completely different picture style is not possible, but even if that is the case, applying the technicolor LUT (or an equivalent s-curve) on the LCD should be feasible

Maybe the record button can be made to switch picture styles before actually starting the recording? You would still be looking at cinestyle while recording, but it would save you the step of going into the menu and selecting cinestyle after exposing for your other picture style. Maybe having a button on the camera to toggle between two picture styles whenever pressed would be a good idea too?

Sci-Fi indeed :)

No.
Hehe

I was thinking along the lines of simulating menu entries (upon record : simulating pressing trash can\navigate to "expo"\set picture style to X .... upon stop : simulating pressing trash can\navigate to "expo"\set picture style to Y).

In theory (well, at least in Sci-Fi theory :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)) in should work.

// Gene Roddenberry out :)

Hehe CF01... "great minds think alike" ?

You were 7 minutes faster then me :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Man, we transmit over the same BBB's (aka Brain Broad Band) :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I was always trying to figure out what does he mean by that...

Because if it means "toggling MANUALLY between PictureStyle"...well, it is a l-i-t-t-l-e cumbersome, to say the least...

What's the fastest speed that people have been able to write to their SD cards using the CBR encoding mode without it stopping? I just got a new class 10 card and it will only do CBR 1.3(about 60mbps average). My understanding is that class 10 should be able to do a sustained 80mbps.

I work @ 1.5 (roughly 55-56 avarage / 65 peaks). I don't know how do you get 60 with x1.3... (maybe PEAKS are @ 60)

My understanding is that class 10 should be able to do a sustained 80mbps.
I'm not sure if its up to the card or the camera has its own finite limit. I know that one guy that checked UHS (ultra high speed cards that rate at 45MB/s) said it is actually SLOWER then 30MB/s Sandisks.

What card do you have ?

I wouldn't think CBR would vary that much. I'm currently using the may 17th version of Magic Lantern. I'll have to run some more test with it in different conditions.

I'm using the cheap Wintec 16GB class 10. My class 6 A-Data 16GB card was doing 1.2 @ 54mbps for the same shot, although it would sometimes quit under certain conditions. It didn't like 2500 iso. The Wintec seemed solid @ 1.3 no matter what camera settings I used, although it always was showing the buffer display graphic. The A-Data never showed that, even when it quit recording.

This is possible. But it will bite you when you will want to record with another picture style (i.e. you will select Portrait, for example, and it will switch back to cinestyle).

Maybe a shortcut to toggle between last two picture styles would work best. But... which button? Maybe adding a menu which allows you to customize keyboard shortcuts... which isn't really straightforward.

Or maybe an option named "Picture style for preview". You set this picture style from ML menu, and the recording picture style from Canon menu. Which would be the most intuitive way?

I've used a custom picture style for preview only, but for stills. I've set one with high sharpness and high contrast, which was a pretty good alternative to focus peaking. But I was shooting RAW.

Not unless you are :
adding a menu which allows you to customize keyboard shortcuts
(which isn't , in your words "really straightforward")

IMO, there should be first a menu option to ENABLE AutoToggle.

ONLY after this option is enabled, you will be able to choose two PicStyles: one for preview (PS 1/2/3) and one for record (PS 1/2/3).

IMO its too convoluted. if you can, leave it as a last resort (setting PS in ML and in Canon Menu, separately)

So maybe its not so Sci-Fi as you thought... :)

When I said Sci-Fi, I understood one thing should be displayed and another thing should be recorded. That's not possible (i.e. only AJ can do this in ASM :P )

I'm having issues with ML, tonight I tried to shoot my first videos to use the better ISOs.
I'm using latest version and transcend 16gb class 10 card and i've never had a buffer problem before. I have set the bitrate to FW default that from my understanding should be the canon's standard (i'm fine with it) but for no reason it happens that when I start a recording at random the bitrate goes way high and the recording stops after 3 seconds. Then I think that its must be set a higher bitrate, but the setting it's still "fw default", so I try to change it and put it back to fw default but then I get a recording at about 12mbit. I have to restart ML to make it work. I don't understand why this happens

EDIT: i tried to update to magiclantern-2011May12.550d.fw109.CBR and FW default now seems to use the proper bitrate, i think, but still stops the recording, how can this be usable??
