Magic Lantern firmware released

The Magic Lantern firmware for the 5D Mark II is available for public beta! There are still some very rough edges, but it should be usable for wide-spread testing. In this version there are:

- Onscreen stereo audio meters
- Full-time cropmarks
- Zebra stripes for overexposed regions
- Fixed audio gain (+10 dB analog, +12 dB digital) with -NO AGC-
- Live headphone monitoring on A/V jack (without disabling LCD)
- printf() to the bitmap display
- GUI event viewer (press Picture Style button)

The button remapping was having problems, so it has been pulled out for now.

I've posted a Magic Lantern firmware introduction on vimeo and the website for more info and downloads is Magic Lantern Firmware Wiki. See the FAQ for most questions regarding the software.

Keep in mind there are no warranties and no guarantees, and if it breaks your camera you get to keep both pieces.

Now all he has to do is re-enable the HDMI out, but I suppose I can use tape for crop marks. Anybody know why the outputs were disabled?

edit nm appears to be related to audio signal noise. I've put in a request for a HDMI on/off option for those of us with external LCD's and audio recorders.

Monitoring sound and image on the shoot via usual monitoring equipment would be great.
I mean even if composite video and line level out could be retained I could monitor via any AV-IN device that has possibly even a headphone output.

I think he knows whats what and will produce in time

I imagine he has reassigned the output to operate as headphone monitor

Confirmed but only concerning the composite video output. There are future plans for enabling them or at least one of them -- HDMI out.

Anthony, see posts from #20 to #25:

Well, I'm checking you are registered there, posting at the same page. But here is the link, anyway.

Giddyup - no shelling out 400 bucks for a zoom...for now.

Hopefully I'm assuming Canon gets wind of this and officially releases this and make sure it's bug free and adds 24p

the juicedlink option is tempting provided the HDMI out is enabled but the H4n still has 4 track recording. I'd love to see a shootout between the H4n and the juicedlink.

I just found a film school here in Sydney with a red one!

Myself and several others have been running very early pre-release versions for the last few days. I tried the latest one last night.

No damage to my camera, no problems at all. Everything works fine but I can only speak for myself.

Make sure you read the documentation.

Yeah just put it in your CF root and then use the update menu. When it runs it automatically activates LV. I can disable LV and go back into it without having to reload anything...

Without HDMI I can't really use this for production, which is a shame... Maybe in the next release :)

It makes no changes to your camera. Once you turn the camera off all traces of the firmware should be gone, and all you are left with is the videos.

You have to remove the battery to completely wipe everything. The "Off" switch is not really off, it's a power save mode so memory is still active.

The documentation recommends removing the battery after a run as a precaution.
