Blimp/Windscreen for CS-3 or MKH416?

What do you guys use for standard indoor & outdoor wind protection on the CS-3 (Oleg probably has good ideas here) and/or the MKH416?

Would the Rycote Softie do for indoor and low-wind outdoor environments? Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

I'm sure other guys have different views on this issue, but as far as what I've found to work is that the Softie is much more than necessary indoors (unless you have a significant amount of wind from a fan or something). I usually just use a foam screen to cut the wind from moving the pole around (the fur cuts your high frequency response so I don't like to use it I don't have to). Outdoors the K-Tek Zeppelin works great! It needs the fur on at all times to be effective, but most of the time it's necessary anyways. I've used a Rycote before and it's nice to have the extra protection using it indoors and it's still effective without the fur, but I couldn't justify spending the money....at least not yet.

foam only
this the privies model picture , ask coffey if they got anew ones
not abig different but they did improve few things on the way

this is funny, i was logging in to post almost the same question...

my problem is that i feel like sometimes i'm using too much windscreen/windblocking.

but my questions are about the entire system, starting with the shockmount.

i went to the rycote site to get some basic info on their system where they have a chart for almost all the common mics and you pick the right # shockmount and the right # connector box (to connect the boom's xlr to the xlr that goes to the mic) and then the right # for the windshield and then another # for the windscreen.

then they even have another # which is a high-wind layer.

what interested me about the rycote's initially was that they make a grayish screen that has no fake fur at all, not even any foam.

i have the ktek that was linked to at Coffey sound...which i hope is the current model because i bought it less than a year ago!

with most of the systems you have a shockmount and then a cage that has no windblocking properties at all and then a think cover of fake fur.

with the rycote you have the cage/basket that is NOT just a wide plastic cage but a basic windscreen.

so you can start out with the minimum and then throw on the fake fur thing.

with my ktek gps shockmount and the linked to windscreen if you want to take off the fake fur you would then have to either slip on the foam cover and leave it all in the plastic cage, or take the mic out and put it on an entirely different shockmount!

i am trying to simplify some of my setups and that process is anything but simple.

on the rycote page i noticed that amongst the list of mics (they even list the cmc6/mk41 and the cmc6/mk41/cut1 filter separately) that the schoeps cmit5u was consicuously absent...

then i found a page where they have a new system that is coming out in june!

all they really say it that it will be called the "S series suspension"

http://www.rycote.com/products/Newhandle.asp

i just want something where i can go from minimal wind protection to something with higher wind protection with a minimal amount of downtime!

i would also like to have a great support system for my three main mics without having to spend a fortune on each system.

Basically what Oleg said. That's the K-Tek Zeppelin, and indoors foam only. The Rycote does provide some wind protection without the fur, but indoors the foam is enough for basic movements of the boom. I have never been in a situation where I would use a zeppelin outdoors without the fur. The Rycote is pretty much industry-standard and costs over twice as much.

i think most people have progressed somewhere along the lines of...

me-66 or AT#### ->
me-66 or AT#### ext. & a hypercardioid (oktava mk012) ->
416 ext. / mk012 int ->
cs3e or cmit5u ext. & cmc6/mk41/cut1 int.

i'm at that stage where i sold my sennheiser wireless and got 2 identical setups of lectrosonics 411a 's rx/SM tx.

then i sold my 416 and 90% of the people said schoeps cmit5u but Oleg said sanken cs3e and Oleg is right 90% of the time.

i couldn't get my hands on a cmit5u to try out, much less to buy, so i got a cs3e last week and it is a nice mic.

but my wonderful sales buddy TinaG @ gotham called today and they had 3 cmit5u's come in and she snagged one for me!

so i have a fed-ex tracking number and tomorrow i'll be sitting around drooling on my cmc6/mk41/cut1 and the cmit5u as i do some comparisons to see how well the indoor/outdoor schoeps sound will blend, plus i will finally be able to do a side by side comparison on the cs3e and the schoeps shotgun.

but anyway, what i was talking about was having something where you could go easily from being outside with no wind to the wind picking up and being able to add something without having to stop and make people wait on you.

i can't think of much worse than hearing "we're waiting on sound..."

Great post! Be sure to give us your opinion on the Schoeps CMIT5U vs Sanken CS-3e.

Nice. That's what I was looking for (and thanks to Oleg too). Since 90% of my work is indoors, I'll look to just pick up the foam first. Looks like B&H has the foam windscreen for about $25.

The K-Tek Zeppelin looks great for outdoor work. I'll add that as I need to.

sorry i dont work on these kind of productions that cant wait i will take the zeppeline out .
for the extara 600 you throw on the schops you can pick up another nice hyper for 2 boom indor boom situation ( not schoeps , something that will be the same as noone will ever know :-)
i just got aditional set for my renting s of mbhos with 5 capsules ( 2 hyper , 2 cards and fig of 8 )for less then what 2 641 cost , people who dont worry about brand name had no problem to use them in any normal production .

if you hear someone say "we are waiting on sound" tell them to f*** off and go tweak a light...again(10 minutes), check for flare...again(5 minutes), touch up makeup...again(3 minutes), adjust a flag...again(12 minutes), go over production notes and have a meating that resolves nothing...again(15 -45 minutes), or just let that 22 year old producer know that it takes a minute to set things up.

As for schoeps, I know Oleg thinks they are over kill and a waste of $$
Its a mixers way of saying "i got a big penis"
hrmm... on second thought, maybe thats why he doesn't like them

No one has ever asked "what mic are you using on this?" As for matching indoors with outdoors, it really doesn't matter. you are in 2 separate settings with different acoustic characteristics. You would expect them to sound different.

This is not a flame or an attack. Use whatever you think is best for you.

Tina is nice. I used to deal with Nick(bye bye) and now mostly Peter :)

T V- Check your email keep the answer privet this time .

for dialog , especially for low budgets , its waist of money , even for not low budgets it even more waist of money

This may be a stupid question, but does the foam come with the CS-3e? If not, where can I pick it up (it's Out of Stock at B&H)? Most of my work is indoors and judging from your experiences collectively, I can add a Softie or a Zeppelin later as I need it.

I have the foam cell for the ME66 and although the ME66 is 2" longer than the CS-3e, I was wondering if it might work? See here:

Thanks guys. This is really a great site.

it's interesting, the cs3e came with no foam, just the plastic box with the mic.

the schoeps came in a wood box with the foam windscreen and a basic mic holder.

i mean the schoeps cmit5u cost more than the sanken cs3e, but the sennheiser 416 i bought a year or two ago came with the foam.

matthew

the box is a japanese jester to the 70s design cheap plastic boxes :-)

yep - the cs-3 comes without foam , aditional 20 us :-(

That's pretty funny and also right on. If the Schoeps performed better than the Sanken, then maybe it might be worth it. But if they perform the same with the schoeps having "better" sound to the mixer's ears, it's a complete "waist" of money. I'd take the Sanken any day over the Schoeps.

However, no one on set knows or even cares what mics you carry. Post doesn't even know. Performance should be taken into consideration more than what "sounds" better or matches as long as you keep the same mic throughout the scene.

i want to do a definitive comparison test...

i figure i have three great mics + a great wireless tx/rx and lav

does anyone have a suggestion on what to have her read? usually i just have her read a story out of the paper or a magazine but if there is anything that is better for doing an A/B (A/B/C/D & maybe E) test of a mic?

my wife has a great voice and she has her "public speaking voice" as she has to od a lot of public speaking and has even been interviewed on national news stuff so i always have her help out when i need any good voice for mic testing or any voiceover stuff...

so i have the gear to record, i will use the 744t to record, if i want to add a hardwired cos-11s to compare it to the cos-11 over the lectro i can use the deva V but i hate the deva V and it sits in a box on the self ! :)

here are the mics...

schoeps cmc6/mk41/cut1
schoeps cmit5u
sanken cs3e

lectrosonic wireless
-receiver ucr 411a
-transmitter SM (+10 model)
-lav mic sanken cos-11s wired for lectro

i'm going to do the test moday (memorial day) so any feedback would be welcomed...if i use the deva V i can use the hardwired cos-11 + i could even throw in a sanken cub-01!
