Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

thanks for shariing your workflow.
Do you set the ACR values like contrast and saturation all the way down to get the maximum amount of info for grading later or play with them directly?
I am a little fearful doing the latter on a non grading monitor, but if I had some scopes other than histograms I could imagine doing that part of the process then.
I think any ACR application would definitely need scopes and even better if it could somehow access an SDI out to video monitor as well, but I suppose that is probably asking too much and not realistic....

I'm still fiddling with my workflow, with the test shoots of the kids I was just going to filmconvert in AE and then cutting the pre-graded prores4444 files in FCPX and then making minor colour and exposure changes. With this narrative scene I'm going to try importing flat prores4444 files into FCPX and then grade. I'm already cutting pre-graded files in FCPX but I don't like the grade so I can just replace the graded files with the flat files. The other way to do it is just cut proxy files and then grade wherever you like. Adding a quick pre-grade or LUT to your AE transcode doesn't add much time to the transcode and I prefer to cut something that looks closer to the final look rather than something flat.

You guys have seen that you can edit the raw files natively now right?

Its still early stages and my mbp is struggling now.... But the Ginger HDR plugin will allow the Canon Raw filrs to be dragged into premiere and after effects without transcoding.

I edited my previous post http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?306673-Magic-Lantern-enables-14-bit-RAW-CinemaDNG-on-5D&p=1986330833&viewfull=1#post1986330833, and I'll also add my test results on the recent builds jun 13 and 14.

I'd like to correct my results on 1728 x 972 since i ran a couple of tests today and try to make long recordings to try and fill up the cf card. 32gig 1000x Lexar.

1880x1058 -- 16:9 -- 400 frames approx.

1880x940 -- 2:1 -- 1,900-2,400 frames approx.

1880x854 -- 2.20:1 -- stable/continuous til card full

1728x972 -- 16:9 -- 10,000 frames approx. ( 7min ) This is already near 32gig card capacity.

1728x864 -- 2:1 -- stable/continuous til card full

I was able to push 1728x972 to go that far by having GD=off / FPS override=23.976 / preview=Hacked mode. Otherwise it will be 7,150 - 6,550 ish.

I confirmed that 1880 x 854 is stable till it fills up card. In my tests it goes up to a 29.7 Gig (31,930,872,768 bytes) file on a 32 Gig card.

It takes me 15 minutes approx to transfer that from CF to Hard drive via usb 2.

Using RAWanizer to merge and extract to DNG it takes 34 min approx.

This is on my Quad core i7 64 bit win 7 system.

Just tried to edit raw native in PP. Able to run real time in ½ resolution but I don't think you'll yield the best quality by doing this. It looks better to use ACR or LR.

Sorry, I'm late to the party and I've been trying to read through the earlier pages, but I just tried shooting my first raw clips hoping to use Hunter's workflow with his LUT in Resolve, and I just realized that rawmagic is mac-only at this point. Is there a PC equivalent? Thanks.

When i connect a EVF or monitor to the camera, the ML overlays and crop marks are off center... is there a setting to fix this... basically it does not work as when you are using a cropped 1880x854 -- 2.20:1 you cant judge where the edge of the frame is. Am i doing something wrong?

Ted, what are the improvements with build 14 v.s 13?

Anyone know if other overcrank frame rates besides 60p are available and if so at what resolutions?

For narratife work I really find 48fps more useful. Is that currently an option in the current ML firlmware?

Steve,

Are you using mkIII? If so, I think (needs confirmation) you can achieve that by activating 60p via canon menu then in ML menu go to FPS over ride and dial in 48fps, or any in between and below.

I'm loving where Magic Lantern is going. A very fast test for myself to see how the highs and lows like grading. Filming my daughter between surfing session in Tofino. Its up there with my BMCC cameras, and not a cropped sensor!

Converted to CineDNG with RAWMagic then Resolve to ProRes444 to FCPX for colour.

(I should note the colour is shot on my laptop so I was flying a bit blind and the last 2 shots are way to hot for me.)

Thanks Ted. Actually buying a 5Dmk3 this week and just was wondering about 48p as only 60p has been spoken about thus far. Looking forward to it!

I am shooting a little project his weekend and wanted to try to shoot some Raw stuff... will it cut together with the 264 and can i mix 24p and 23.9... in the same timeline? What build is the most stable for now? Is there a place where i can keep track of the latest builds? Thanks

Replied to your PM. also, if you are using mkII, note the stable and continuous resolutions for now are:

1880x854 -- 2.20:1 -- stable/continuous til card full

1728x972 -- 16:9 -- 10,000 frames approx. ( 7min ) This is already near 32gig card capacity.

1728x864 -- 2:1 -- stable/continuous til card full

If you are going to crop the h264 and go for 2:1 or 2.20:1 aspect then the wide aspects would be ok.

If your editing 16:9 then I suggest 1728 x 972 since you can scale thgis 111.1% and its already 1920x 1080 and its still sharp and detailed as h264.

If your using the MKIII, it can shoot continuously at 1920 x 1080 for 16:9 and even at 1920 x 1152.

Squig can chime in for more info on mkIII nightly builds.

Yes. I am really hoping for an SSD solution because I am prepared to extend the workflow for the improved images. Lets face it, the 5DMKIII with it native recording is a camera we all wished could have been more up to its potential.

did a test 5mk3RAW vs C100 H264, my conclusions, C100 better in terms of resolution and latitude, by.. hard to say how much, but its easy to spot, notice..
the sources, raw footage will post later today. 5dmk3 RAW is great, much better than H264. But for serious for not as good as C100, and makes more noise than C100 at iso 2500 and above!
