Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

The first video I made with ML raw I used an external monitor and exposed by the WFM on that monitor. I ended up with underexposed footage. The second time I used the built in histogram and exposed towards right and ended up with a much better exposed image. Both times I had very visible FPN but it was also tameable in Lightroom. I'll shoot some more this weekend and try to learn more on how to get the best out of the 5D3 and raw.

There's a bug that we just discovered in the build from the 18th of May that has "vertical stripes", it's not FPN. The builds from the 21st and 22nd are ok. FPN is normal Canon sensor behaviour.

For those with a 5DmkII and a VAF filter, I tested that the filter is essential at 1x resolution.

However, its mushed up soft when used at 5X crop mode.

Here is a new chart test at 1880 x 1080 & 1920 x 1078 comparing the DNGs with a still CR2 sraw2 frame and also with a chart at h264.

This is using NB May 22.

Thank you, I do not have it, for some reason, there I have test.c..
Ted, also, I have bunch of little ikons instead of the list as it used to be, any help how to change it?

could you post a screen shot of what you have? Maybe you pressed the canon menu instead of the trash bin? in ML mode when you press the canon menu it brings up small icons on your screen.

In the 5D mk II that screen appears when you press the trash bin (ML menu) then you press Canon Menu button.

So to make it go back to ML menu I press the canon menu button again.

hey Squig could you post a direct link to where you downloaded latest build? thanks!

My latest! Comparing H264 Technicolor Cinestyle to ML Raw. Highlight recovery, curves tweaked slightly in Adobe Camera Raw. No other correction applied, and no post sharpening applied. Didn't touch cinestyle H264 footage at all because frankly, it's no longer pleasurable to tweak compressed footage.

Shot on May 22nd build, on Komputerbay 1000x.

Vimeo is set to 1080p, so please give it a second to load and then hit fullscreen. The parrot shots and the clocktower shots are my favorites in terms of showing off the power of the extended DR and color corrective capabilities.

Hey gents I was wondering - what kinda stable recording times are you finding possible on your tests at RAW 1080 (or likely possible with a raw 1080 2:35 crop?)

A bit of naysaying that the feature will be of any practical use?

You can't really give a fair comparison of corrected footage vs uncorrected footage.

What is with all these skewed comparisons. How hard is it to shoot things the same to compare how something reacts under the same conditions. This test is as useless overall as the Moire test with the BMCC where the BMCC was twice as wide a shot.

@picture and color
What's with the blinking pixels in the clips shot on RAW? Easy to spot near most edges. Weird, I don't think I've seen that issue before.

I don't think it is useless. Sure the Cinestyle should have been graded to the best of its ability but it is obvious how much more the RAW has to offer. The detail level is like a different camera shot it. No more tests needed, RAW walks all over h.264 End of story. I hope this can be elevated to solid workflows with dependable, longer record times.

What about SDXC cards?

These are rated at 90MB/s.

Price seems better than CF cards and I have a feeling the speeds on the SDXC cards seem to be increasing quickder and with larger capacity with the new UHS-II rating

I believe the bottleneck for SD cards is actually before the card at the interface, so no matter how fast the card is it won't make any difference. It's kinda like having a super fast RAID connected by USB2.
