Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Here is my test from the hot day shooting at a bday party. Just need the faster card now.
This is just white balanced and use of curves and exposure slider in LM to adjust contrast. Very minor minor adjustments so people can get a look at the image almost how it comes off the sensor.

Nice color tones. I hope one day that baby will realize the historic significance of the experiment being performed on his 1st birthday party! LOL!

* 5D3-RAW vs BMC: I think the 5D3 would be the winner for everything except maximum DR, where the BMC has at least one stop more. But I would call the 5D3 the winner in DR too, unless you're willing to go oldschool and use a light meter: the lack of exposure aids in the BMC (they have white zebras, but not histogram, waveform, or even spot meter) makes it very difficult to efficiently use all that DR. In my only BMC shoot so far, I ended up wasting most of it in A LOT of shots; my fault, yes, but it wouldn't have happened with a 5D3-RAW (thanks for the waveform, ML team!)

* BMC vs Scarlet: interesting comparison, Postmaster, but I hadn't realized your test was with same focal length on both cameras! Since I'm not designing sensors or OLPFs, that's not very useful to me. I would never work like that, the only comparison I would be interested in is one with great lenses in both cameras, but matched FoV. Could you post a side-by-side comparison of BMC-with-18mm vs Scarlet-with-25mm? Those should match FoV pretty well.

* RED vs 5D3-RAW: yes, that's the video that was posted yesterday, if they have changed something, I haven't noticed

I think the 5D3 has more usable DR in the shadows than the BMCC. Yet to do a proper test that is just my gut feeling having used them.

Agree Sam about the wasted DR on a BMCC shoot. Even with 13 stops it needs careful exposure to make the most of that DR, though you can save a shot that's off very well.

Scarlet test at 1080p and it is considered soft? Cannot agree with that. Yeah Scarlet is soft at 1:1 but it is a 4K image!! Even soft 4K resolves better than the sharpest 1080p so I don't think it is right to describe Scarlet or Epic that way.

Will test the Kineraw S35 next week and see how that compares.

I still don't see how this is any sharper than a gh2 hack or gh3 or even a d800? Will most clients, viewers? I'm wondering if the investment in storage and the time to process this will be worth it for anything over a 3 minute clip? How about shooting a 30 minute narrative, or an hour long documentary with tons of outtakes etc? I'm not sure this really has practical application.

In the shoot I did with the BMC, we had several shots that had to be somewhat underexposed (talent in a dark room, I wanted to bring more lights, then push it down in post, but the director didn't want that, he said it would kill the mood).

Well, that's no good, but it kind of sounds like you were working with the wrong tool to begin with. Or you should have shot ProRes? That's not the fault of the camera, you seemed to want to do what the camera wants you to do, but your shooting circumstances says no.

This is, however, one reason why I think there may be some rough starts to BV1's usage, people aren't used to how you're supposed to work with the camera. I've run into this before, where it's a mentality that "I want it to look like how I shoot it right now."

Well you chose the wrong camera, or shoot ProRes. Which in that case, yeah, Waveform would be helpful. When it comes down to that I use my TVLogic's waveform.

Let me ask you? Have you shot with the hacked MK3 yet? Seen it on your monitor from your footage? Trust most who report that it's sharp. Because it is. And moire free to boot. It's 14bit RAW and colors just such.

It's not hard to work with 1080p RAW. We just need the batch conversion and maybe a container to deal with it. But it' not like workflows that most are use too. Go and watch most TV commercials. Usually shots last about 2 or 3 seconds. This RAW hack has made the MK3 a potential player for high end budget commercials. As for narratives? If somebody wants the control of RAW on their feature, I'm sure they will jump through hoops to do it.

It's still a very young hack. More is to come judging by ML's past work. FOr those who already owned an MK3 before this, we welcome every advancement they make. ANd yes, it's far sharper of an image than the GH2 and GH3, both cameras of which I have had.

@Dusty great response thanks bud. I'm playing devil's advocate as I am the annoying guy interjecting as he decides which camera to buy. I'd love the 5D3 but for its Raw, without Raw it is just an amazing stills...for video gh3 wins hands down (for me) but the raw capability is pretty interesting. I'd like to do more "travel" videos and "interviews/documentary work" which may make raw workflow nearly impossibly for my little 2011 macbook pro. Plus it looks like $700 for just storage on top of a 3K body. You think ML will get the raw workflow to the point that it can compress raw?

I shot a scene like that with the MK3 (pre raw) https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzJ3L6nv6Fn0cG9oV09OYjF6MW8/edit?usp=sharing I had to expose in the middle and pull it back in post, it was a nightmare to light the set, I had to light, shoot, test grade, over and over again until I got what I wanted. The first test I did with the MK3 raw (the skeleton) proved I could shoot these dark moody scenes underexposed without a huge noise/detail penalty. Given that my feature is post apocalyptic and there's no electricity I want the lighting to reflect that.

There's every likelihood that someone will add compression to the raw to DNG conversion process, I think it's a matter of when not if. The Pocket BM compresses CinemaDNG in camera, I think my mac has a bit more capability to compress files than the pocket BM.

I think it would be nice to have a little compression for the RAW data or it would be great if an SSD/CF solution could be made. The card door might be an issue but if there was a way to have a CF interface feeding an SSD this would all get very much more affordable. The images are beautiful and look so much better than the GH2 imho. Should be interesting to see this unfold over the summer.

I had the Gh3. It's the aliasing (very bad aliasing) and the moire that killed it. The image is great in terms of tonality and the camera build is very nice. But the RAW hack still out resolves the Gh3 and is nearly artifact free. 1080/60 is nice to have but it's not the deal breaker (for me). For doc work and interview work, the C100 with a Bcam 5dmk3R is quite the combo. Or just spend it and get the C300. The almost perfect all around camera.

I'm really looking at the C100, as to me it seems to produce a great image with such little fuss and hassle of all these new options...I did a price breakdown of the C100 and an MK3 running ML, the C100 is cheaper....just with adding the cost of media on the MK3, a low cost VF, and a low cost audio solution. Of course the MK3 does great stills as well, but just talking about the video capability.

The C100 has been given a bad rap. After hearing Dusty and some others with glowing reviews, I dug deep into even more reviews, lots of footage...it's a stellar camera from what I have compiled.

It really is a underestimated camera thats been given a bad rap. It delivers an incredible image with all the tools built in to manage capturing them.

1066x CF card is in da house. :2vrolijk_08:

Here's the real world sustained test results with the 18/5 build. I got bored shooting my foot after 9Gb.

1928x1180 24p @ 90MB/s
1440x672 48p @ 77MB/s
1120x640 60p @70MB/s dropped frame @ 2300 frames.

So how is this hacking working with the Mark 2? Is it able to get the same or similar quality to the Mark 3 or not? I know the Mark 2 has an older processor but does that make a difference?

Also I guess time will tell but maybe we will see this working on the 7D? If so RAW video might be getting to a really affordable price.
