Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

why are everybody so much excited about this? ok its good that the camera's ability has been unlocked but is it viable to edit these big sized giants for normal people? will it not take a super computer to edit all this and great amount of hard disks?

I don't foresee a lot of folks editing/working with the native RAW files, but using a "processing" utility (like REDCINE-X) to do initial color correction before transcoding to ProRes/DNxHD for editing/finishing.

At least that would be my plan, as soon as that kind of utility is available.

There is no doubt that unlocking the RAW capability of the 5D is pretty huge for those that need it. A relatively cheap 5D could become a viable alternative to a RED or similar but how many 'normal' people need or want to deal with RED RAW footage. Very few.

It's still cool though.

Does anyone know if there are any sample dng files floating around that can be downloaded and played around with? I'm frustrated seeing already graded tests, most of which show underexposed images that are brought back up. I want to see overexposed scenes that are brought down!

See my example above. I literally blew the lid off the box in camera and got it back in Adobe raw. Only thing I did on that was recover the highlights and transcode to ProRes 4444 which you can download.

Still would rather wait for that camera as opposed to purchasing a 5D to use this...it seems that the detail still isn't quite there (the sensor is still line-skipping after all), which is something the BMPC4K doesn't do.

Yeah you're right, that Smith Rock footage is soft as shite.

It is a great achievement showing what the cameras are capable of, but I don't think it will be used all that much beyond the novelty stage, mostly due to how much of a pain in the ass working with raw is, and how it isn't supported by Canon whilst also pushing the cameras heavily.

One mans pain in the arse is another mans joy.

Squig... I haven't read if you have adressed this question, but do you think that ML would be able to enable a more resilient signal out through HDMi as well?

RAW out is highly unlikely but hey so was RAW in. Personally I'd much rather record internally and not have to walk around with a death star on my shoulder.

Any word on whether 60p will be possible on the Mark III?

It looks doable @ 720p with a fast card. When my 1066x card gets here I'll try to shoot some 720p 60p anamorphic. 48p should definitely work. 1080p slo mo is too much for the cards but who knows how fast they'll get in the future. ML have overcome the cpu/buffer bottleneck so it's all about card write speed now.

The raw2dng utility is already outputting to MJPEG, and CinemaDNG is on the drawing board. My plan so far for the feature is to transcode to a Prores proxy in AE then back to FCPX for cutting then probably a fine cut grade in AE with a film convert stock and out to a ProRes 4444 or JPEG2000 master. There's a lot of RAW workflow info @ bmcuser.

In reality the news may not be that significant right now - there is already BMCC.
The idea that a hacked dslr might best a $15k-$20k C300 in image quality is nice though - regardless.
In a price context it's a HUGE freebee I would think. And hacking stuff is novel. What's the future?
Storage and bandwidth bottlenecks diminish over time.

Squig,

Have they updated the raw2dng script utility to output mjpeg? Is there a new download link to that? I'm still using the old drag n drop method version.

I seam to have vertical lines in my footage.... any ideas. 1000x card 1920x1080

Here is a crop:

Macgregor seems to have been getting the same thing, I think it's the FPN of the 5D sensor, is this MKII or MKIII?

I did see some mention of MJPEG output working, checkout the ML forum RAW workflow thread.
