Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Cool!
For this, apart from the usual test which you already know how to do, I'd like to have a test for usable DR.
It's not easy to find a scene that will show heavy clipping on both ends when you have nearly 12 stops of DR at your disposal (think about that for a minute: awesome times!), so I would look for a moderately contrasty scene, and I would do this:
Put 3 or 4 steps of ND filtration, set up camera with correct exposure, shoot RAW still, record video and ML-RAW. Add another 3-4 steps of ND, shoot RAW still, record video and ML-RAW without changing anything else. Take all the filters out, shoot RAW still, record video and ML-RAW.

Eagerly awaiting :)

I've got it up and running continuously now but I can't do anything with the data until someone writes a mac debayer. The rolling shutter doesn't look any worse, if anything it's even better. I can do 1080p on my 600x Lexar card.

I spose I could send you the RAW data, you have a pc right?

Happy days! This really is amazing news and congrats/thanks goes out to the super talented ML team. I know its early days but is there any sort of proposed timescale for this to be released even in beta?

I'm in no huge rush, I already know it kicks arse, but we'll run the numbers just so we don't have to keep listening to the doubters.

There's no timeframe with ML development, the devs do what they can when they can, but the place is a hive of activity ATM and things are progressing at about warp 9.

It's like having a newborn, you can't sleep. My kid got sick, I barely slept for 6 weeks! Good practice for shooting a feature.

I just plunked down 2 caps dephenhydramine hcl so I could also get some! ...waiting to get wooozzyy.... I hope the 5d2 build is ready when I wake up...

This is incredible obviously. I've read that there's also a Motion .JPG option for (far) less disk space. I wonder if they can do high frame rates with the Motion .jpg. I'd probably buy a Mark III just for the RAW, but slow motion is a major bonus for me. I'm on an FS700 and I love it, but the whole RAW process for that camera is cumbersome and not nearly as practical as shooting to CF cards. CF cards? WTF? That sounds like crazy talk. Man.... those ML guys are talented.

To be honest, I can't find myself shooting RAW except for certain situations as the drive space and work flow is seriously impacted. But if they can get clean Motion .JPG, I would be over the moon.

Well, you will have the capability to get clean M JPEG. The rub is that you still need to record the raw data in camera, so you'd have to have a couple of fast cards at least.....but the converter that ML provides for dealing with the data can be output to M JPEG...so it would be very nice for faster and less intensive post workflow.

Mind you: not any CF card!!
Anybody going into this, better budget your cards too, they are not cheap. There's a Transcend 128GB 1000x card that runs around $350, one of those can hold around 25 minutes of 1920x1080 uncompressed RAW footage. I'd need at least two of these. If that one happens not to be fast enough and we have to go Sandisk or Lexar, we're talking $650 per 128GB card.

Cool! So it's at least a stop better than what we had in video mode. Awesome.
With this and with proper exposure aids (that lovely waveform that ML also gives you) I think I've covered my DR needs for 99.9% of shots. (on the BMC I lose a lot of the DR to the fact that I don't have the faintest idea of what I'm doing while I try to expose a shot)

Does anyone know if the bottleneck is the speed at which they can read out the buffer, or if it is the speed at which they can write to storage?

It used to be the camera's processing of the RAW stream for DNG encoding, now that they write their own RAW format I think the current bottleneck is how fast the camera can write to storage.

I've read some comments about them, but I guess it's too early to tell. I would be worried to use them for anything mildly important unless a lot of users posted positive reviews.

I would go with, at least, a Transcend: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...eASIN=B009S61AFQ&tag=similaar-20&linkCode=as2
(I've always had good experiences with Transcend cards, but I know some people have had issues with them and will only use Sandisk; those are really expensive, though!)

edit: mmmm... there are some positive reviews too, but...

The bottleneck is most likely to be the cards. Most can't maintain their maximum advertised data rates for continuous write to capacity and you will need sustained 90MB/sec or close at 24fps for 1920x1080 14bit raw.
