Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

So any idea when the 10fps version will be released?

And what about the full 24fps one? (if it'll even happen)

Some things to clear up:

- It doesn't save CinemaDNG, but just plain DNG, copied from CHDK.
They have been doing this for years.

- This will not improve rolling shutter at all.

- Don't hold your breath for raw video. 24fps at 1080p is unlikely IMO, even on 1000x cards.

- HDMI out doesn't help. Here's why:
raw image buffer vs recorded with hyperdeck shuttle uncompressed. Ignore the overlays.

- In continuous mode I've got 4fps of raw data (not DNG, just the raw image buffer) on a 266x card. G3gg0 got
12.5fps of YUV422 video on the Lexar 1000x card.

- I was able to record around 30 frames in burst mode, at LiveView FPS (24, 25, 30, 50, whatever). It takes roughly 1 second of "recording" to RAM and then half a minute of saving the DNGs to card.

Nevertheless, I find this very useful as a fast burst mode for stills, or when you want to save shutter clicks or just avoid noise.

Please, do not shoot the messenger. xP

So Kholi, I see why Alex said the cards aren't fast enough for 24p and why you can't go 24p out HDMI. Now I wonder if they will ever be able to manage a stable 12fps on a fast card AND the other stable 12fps out the HDMI, and the combine in post to achive 24p. MagicLantern is known for thinking outside of the box to make things happen.

The best prospect is an uncompressed YUV422 24p 1902x720 crop writing to a 1000x card with a nice boost in resolution and dynamic range. The 2.65:1 crop shouldn't be an issue for filmmakers.

If they can tweak or bypass the buffer RAW should be doable too. The fact is it's there! They've managed to tap into the 14bit RAW sensor data, now it's just a matter of taming it. This didn't happen overnight, they've been working on this for a longtime, but huge breakthroughs like this create momentum.

Remember to donate.

There won't be dynamic range boost if it's 8bit YUV422, it's baked in with Canon's own gamma curve.

Bummer dude. And no way to apply picture profiles either, correct?

What about 1280x720p 24p RAW and shooting anamorphic, would there still be a gain in resolution over 1080p H.264? All the MK3 really needs to make it shine is another 150 lines of resolution to put it on par with the GH2.

Picture profile is also baked in I believe. for example, everytime you change picture profile, you can see what it looks like in the liveview.

Down res from the original resolution takes more computing power, I think it's not feasible.

Alex once mentioned 1080p 8bit 422 MJPEG from liveview, don't know if it's still being developed.

Ok that's cool we'd still be able to shoot flat.

Yeah and there's been some talk over the last couple of days about figuring out a way to compress the DNGs with a 1-2Mb per frame target for 24p. If the BM pocket camera can write compressed RAW to an SD card you would think that Digic IV could do it to CF.

"Does this mean we’ll never see RAW video or higher-quality video thanks to Magic Lantern? Not necessarily, and I was also told privately that some were confident that they could get this to work at full-frame rates — we’re just not there yet. This is just the beginning for this particular hack, and there very well may be more locked away in the code that the team hasn’t yet discovered or been able to utilize yet. If you’re a Canon user, don’t expect this tomorrow, and just like with other Magic Lantern developments, these things take time."

^ That

And they're looking at the SNR, not just if there's anything there (as I do when I measure, since I don't have the means to measure SNR). So that should be "11.7 usable", against "11.3 absolute and you get to decide what's usable and what's not" in video mode. Clear improvement if you ask me.

Yeah there's a lot more usable DR RAW compared to prolost, flat, or cinestyle. When I get continuous RAW up and running I'll shoot some DR tests and send them to Samuel to analyse. I reckon there's something like an extra 1-2 stops in highlight recovery and there's more shadow detail too. Denoising in Adobe RAW kills trying to denoise H.264 footage. I don't think there's much in it DR wise between the RAW MK3, the BMCC, the 1DC, and the C300. The MK3 could even come out on top!
