Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Toshiba just announced a 1066x CF card that does minimum sustained 65MB/s..

The key word here is JUST.

Yet you think Canon are holding out on you, for not including a feature that wouldn't be able to be used until the technology is ready? That's without even taking into account if the buffer is big enough or if the camera will melt, if used for a long duration.

I'm really rooting for ML, great feature, even if they could only get it up to about 6 seconds at 24p...... But this constant "Canon are holding back on us" stuff is annoying.... It's a mid budget stills camera with a video feature. Why should they spend time and money adding 2K raw frame burst that 1% of their target market might use?

You're joking right.

Of-course they're holding out on us. If they built the cameras we wanted it would hurt their profit margins.

I just wish someone would hack the D4.

It's not going to work over the HDMI out. HDMI only records 8bit, the DNGs are 14bit RAW.

The ML site is down, maybe Canon sent in the Ninjas.

hehe, I think we are the ninjas bringing the site down :)

* They could send the 14-bit image out through HDMI, disguised as something else, record that without compression, then undo the disguise on the PC and write beautiful DNG files that you can work with (anti-disguise could be done on the fly while copying the files to the PC)

* I've played with several of the DNG files they're capturing from the liveview stream of a 5D3. They have nearly the same sharpness and detail of a downsized RAW still image, and they have nearly the same DR too (just a bit more noise in the shadows). (Yes, I've done side-by-side comparisons of LV-RAW vs Sills-RAW, not just against recorded video)

If they get this working, it would be HUGE. But yes, they must be living in fear of Canon ninjas...

Not true, in this case.... With the 5DII, they were not holding uncompressed 24p/2K raw to CF cards from you to force you to buy a higher priced model.... it was not practical or possible, at the time (and still might not be).

Do you think a Canon 7D might be a good camera for these ML raw experiments? It already has a great buffer performance with the last official Canon firmware upgrade (full res jpegs at 8 fps for long burst duration) and, unlike the other crop Canons, uses Compact Flash cards for high speed writing.

IF they can get it working then we have to figure out how to handle all these DNGs in post.

Looks like I'll be holding on to the MK3 for a bit longer.

^ Well, just as we do with the BMC files, I guess. It's an issue, but the price is good enough so we'll all jump through all the hoops, if it works. We did it with DSLRs.

Comparisons of RAW stills (downsampled using bicubic) and the live view RAWs that ML is recording (two shots, one at ISO 800 and another at ISO 3200):

Graded to match, and expanding the DR as much as possible (bringing up the shadows and bringing down the highlights).
As I said, not quite the same, but a lot closer than what we had previously.

I love the stuff magic lantern is doing, but even so, odds are they won't have a working version of the this before the black magic pocket camera comes out, which is a $1k camera designed to shoot what this is hacking. Idk, it's just not that exciting to me. I agree with whoever called it gimicky.

I highly doubt this hack will turn into a consistent 24fps RAW video mode, but if by some miracle is does it's SUPER exciting! We'd have full frame RAW 2k. No more having to worry about crop factor and not having a fast wide angle lenses. No more worrying about low light sensitivity. We'd have it all. You forget the costs associated with the pocket camera. First off, the hard part will be finding a fast wide angle lens that doesn't break the bank and covers the sensor. Secondly, while low light is decent it's nowhere near that of the Mark III. Thirdly, DOF isn't it's strong suit, not that you can't achieve some shallow depth...you can, but will probably need NDs and such as well as a very fast lens.

If they get a Mark III working at 24fps 2k RAW this will be me. lol:

$100 says it won't.

Reading through the threads at magic lantern Gary, they might. BUT not at full frame. More like in a "crop mode". AND it might not even be raw but in yuv 422. Right now they are able to run a test in YUV 422 continuously but only in "crop".

If it's crop mode YUV 4:2:2, then they haven't succeeded at anything. Remember, kiddos, it wasn't ML that gave you clean 4:2:2 HDMI out...it was Canon.

It's no more useful than a burst of raw photos at the moment.... That video made me laugh "See, I have information in the highlights now!" Yep, you will get that shooting a raw photograph. 10 frames a second for 28 frames max is not spectacular. lol.

I know, I know...they are at the first stages, but I have a feeling there will be many many many hurdles to get this to a point of being useful.

Even when I was a betting man I wouldn't take that bet. lol. It seems way too good to be true. I have low expectations, but high hopes. We shall seem. I'm very curious to see what progress they continue to make, if any.

I'm personally going Black Magic Pocket Cam at $995 and putting that extra money to get fast lenses to compensate for the smaller sensor. It won't be RAW out of the box, but clean Pro Res 4:2:2 directly to the cards is ideal for me anyway.
Someone talked about low light with the 5DMk3, take a look at this video at the 4:24 mark compared to the Black Magic Cinema Cam. The whole video is actually very interesting and well done, shot by a guy who has been shooting HDSLRs since they arrived.

How about books on all those people who thought big and failed miserably? Oh yeah, we just conveniently forget those people. Those stories don't sell books about "thinking big".

I'm kind of new to the forums, but isn't "thinking big" the whole point of filmmaking?
