Mad Max: Trailer looks awesome!

You're right about that not being the Interceptor and being the rocket car, my mistake. And the kid does sneak onto the rig, you're right.

Wow, then that scene makes no sense to me. Why would Max and the convoy ever meet again after that? Maybe Max drives out to find them and return the kid? Geeze, I just watched the film two weeks ago and now I want to watch it again haha.

Yeah, and for the record I'm not trying to be a dick about this....I just love these movies! hahaha. (& I enjoyed your review)

I did do a quick run-thru of my Road Warrior blu-ray to watch the intro & end. (funny, my copy of the blu-ray has the original "Mad Max 2" in the opening credits)
Maybe Max drives out to find them and return the kid?
Well, upon viewing again, I see the Gyro Captain wheels up to the wreckage and they have a laugh. I think eventually the convoy found them & picked up the boy.

Come hell or high water, I'm watching Mad Max tonight, and then the hopefully the other 2 later this week. Then of course, doubling back to the theatre for another viewing of Fury Road!

I just watched all three yesterday!
And want to go back to the theatre to watch Fury Road again but in 2D if I can find it here not dubbed in German.

There's just something really mean & lean about Mel Gibson though that's just so fitting for the part. But as mentioned, any iconic role will be almost impossible to fill by a new actor. At least to those who grew up with the original.

Interesting comments ref Hardy's Mad Max .....I didn't mind his portrayl (but others have) . I put this down to 2 things

1) Max doesn't take out the villan , she does, which for some maybe doesn't cemment his role as the Hereo/ protagonist.

I think it goes even further than that in that there were no helpless women or men that needed a hero to save them. Furiosa can obviously hold her own as can Nux and the female biker gang. Eve the brides stepped up and tried to fight off Max and Nux (and later used themselves as human shields). Max wasn't a hero, reluctant or otherwise, he was just a dude fighting to survive just like everyone else on that War Rig.

2) The Mad Max character is so iconic and loaded with our own bias and memories it would be hard for any actor to fill the role, even an aged Gibson. Would anyone accept new actors for the roles of Luke Skywalker or a Ripley ?.

This probably played into it as well, but we've accepted a new cast of Star Trek, new X-men, new Joker... With so many reboots and sequels I think people are getting used to their favorite characters getting played by different actors.

I feel much, MUCH better knowing that I didn't mis-remember the ending to The Road Warrior!

Max stays and the others leave for a better life in both #2 and #3. I guess this is only a slight shift from Fury Road where Max must leave in order to go away from the better life that the others are going to try to start at the Citadel. Somehow it didn't ring true to me, especially after Max suggested they go back there. But hey, what the hell do I know?

As far as new actors in iconic roles, I give you James Bond (and on a smaller note Dr. Who). At a certain point the character grows to become this enigmatic mythic symbol, and as long as the actor works to the symbolism of the character we will accept it and go along for the ride. I don't mind that Hardy's Max is not Gibson's Max, I just mind that he just doesn't seem like "Mad Max".

When he was leaving the Citadel I found it fitting because if I was as screwed up in the head as him I'd want to be on my own too! haha. I think he found some redemption for past failures but I don't think it 'cured' him of his demons which I find believable than him hugging it out and suddenly becoming a people person.

It's a nice interview and his answer makes sense, but it just didn't quite work for me. I understood why, just didn't quite buy it.

I have to say that the nightmare/hallucinations of his family and others that he failed to save didn't work for me. There's a reason similar segments were cut from the previous films.

I think the movie was missing an important story beat at the end. We never finished up with Max's madness, his flashbacks. And he never had a chance to contemplate staying or leaving. That little bit of short changing weakened the film.

I agree, although it would have hurt the pacing to add much else at that point. I think the "ending" to the hallucinations was meant to be when he took the arrow to the hand. Shielding himself from his own nightmare he inadvertently saved his own life. It's kinda like a "Use the Force" moment, but accidental. Again, that stuff didn't really work for me, but then again it was just about all we had in the movie to hang our hats on for Max and his character.

The whole ghost girl visions part was distracting and should have been removed. The version of Chronicles of Riddick that uses the same device is an interesting variation but not as good. It loses focus by playing too many angles. I think the fact it wasn't removed in Fury Road was a poor editing decision. It should have been fully exploited or fully removed. At the end I felt it was unresolved, even if the final time he saw her was supposed to close the arc. The problem isn't that it was unresolved, rather that it wasn't explored. Unless it is a plant for resolution in the sequel.

Getting so deep into Max's head I think is also wrong. And to overplay and define the crazy is also a slant on the name Mad Max that doesn't really gel for me. I always felt the play on words to mean Mad (angry) Max in a mad (crazy) world. But that might just be me.

All my complaints about the film are minor quibbles though except for the casting of Tom Hardy. I honestly would have preferred to see Old Max. The character should develop, the world has changed, so should he. Not be stuck forever in youth. With Charlize around to do the arse-kicking he doesn't need to be in top shape. If they didn't have an eye on sequels I don't think age would have been an issue.

I think the beat you guys feel is missing is somewhat in line with the series. Max makes decisions to leave or "not join" and those reasons are not necessarily explained. And in this film, Max is more "mad" than ever before. He's downright feral at the beginning, and gradually becomes more human-like as he unwittingly fights for humanity alongside people who are not "mad" like him. But, as George said, the film takes place over three days. And even though he came quite far over that three day period, he's still not ready to integrate back into any form of society.

Also, Tom Hardy is attached to three more Mad Max films (one of which already has a script ready), so I'm sure there's plenty more to come.

Thanks for the warning. Just what we need - another plotless, candy coated, star vehicle popcorn franchise. I will be sure to be out fishing the day those come out. And even then, my day will still be more interesting than "Sad Max - Furry Toad".

What is the brilliant action film that Mad Max fell short of? I can't think of a single action movie in at least a decade where the action moved the plot or character development. I can't think of a single action scene at didn't bore me to tears within 2 minutes let alone sustain me for 90. Can you enlighten me?

What are you, just baiting here? If you at all like the Mad Max films then I cannot imagine you not enjoying this one. It's like watching three or four of them in one. It has just about everything that these films ever represented within it, mostly in abundance. And it is certainly executed with stunning technical craft and inventiveness. If you don't like the films then why bother to comment in the thread? Go do something you do like.

In the meantime, I will keep myself entertained with my kids' Legos.

(I had to swap in Lucy for the role of Furiosa)

Yes, you are absolutely right. Everyone should have the same opinion here, dissension or a differing point of view should not be tolerated. That way everyone can agree with each other and talk about what a masterpiece this film is.
