so...people here actually buy their software?

Let's put it this way -- any talk of piracy on this board will get you banned and your thread deleted.

There are a few things we simply do not put up with here on DVXUser, and those can be summed up by The Four P's:
Politics
Personal Attacks
Piracy
Pornography

It's more than two pounds heavier than a 17'' macbook pro, but if you're using it mostly as a desktop replacement it should be fine. For portability I'd look elsewhere. The price/performance ratio is much better on dells than on macs, though, and the latest generation of macs is a bit behind in terms of graphics cards, etc.

Yeah i was at a mall in So-Cal about 3 weeks ago, and they had set up a stand with Dell computers. I saw the M1710 sitting there and i just fell in love with it, Its was supr fast, they had set up a game on it (i think it was Quake 4) and i could not belive the graphics it was puttin out, it was insane. The screen was huge, like what "projX v2.0" said it would probably be great for editing with that 17 -inch screen, and yes i did pick it up... Yeah not the most portable notebook out there seemed to be around 8-9 pounds, but i am looking for a more on the road desktop replacement, i'm not a student at Davis anymore, i know it would not be the best laptop to have in your backpack while riding your bike, thats for sure..

Hello! I am in the market for a Notebook, and i need some help! I am going to be using it for mostley Editing. I have had my eye on the MacBook pro 17-inch, but before i go to the Apple and pick one up, i want to know what you guys think. Would that be a good choice for what i am going to be doing? Or should i look else where? I know it runs on Intel Core 2 Duo so it will run windows ,wich is what i am most familiar with. I was also looking at the XPS M1710. I heard that it was a great notebook. But, what do you guys think? Thanks in advance..

I worked with both - hands down mac is the easiest, not necessary the fastest - again both when mac was a mac and not a intel - lol - i can only imagine now...

Cheers to that.

I abide by whatever TOS are, that's only right - if you can't, don't post. And I also think this list is wise: these topics tend to be very disruptive, and we are not here for politics. I would add "religion" to this, since arguing religion is as unproductive as arguing politics, and also don't belong IMHO.

There's one thing that concerns me though. I'm hardcore opposed to copyright infringment - no ifs, buts or maybes (I'm probably more hardcore with this than even most here). What worries me though is if we can't discuss the issue at all - mind you, I'd never advocate in favor of it, obviously - however, shutting down all discussion may not be the best, as it's a reality we have to face here on DVXuser, as we come across this in our work all the time.

So, can someone clarify the lines here? To me, the obvious no-nos are: advocating in favor of CI (copyright infringement), giving tips on how to do it, giving urls to sites that do CI or facilitate CI. But what about the rest of the issues around CI?

Can someone - a moderator - please clarify for us, since I sure don't want to say, by accident, the wrong thing. TIA!

Trying to figure out how to work religion into the list too, but I'd have to come up with a "P" word. :) Prosletyzing? I dunno...

Piracy advocation is just plain not acceptable. People talk about copyright infringement here all the time, asking questions for clarification etc, asking about the rules of "fair use" and whatnot, and that's all fine and good (if a bit repetitive; this is one of the most-discussed subjects and has been covered repeatedly so a little searching will yield a treasure trove of info.)

But if someone comes on and starts asking about "warez" or "borrowing" someone else's software, or of "ripping DVDs" or whatnot, that's clearly a violation of the intent and spirit. We will not be a source for people to exchange information about how to steal or duplicate copyrighted material or for places to go to do so, or for ways to defeat legitimate registration etc. Discussion about the role of DRM in society is fine, but advocating or engaging in illegal behavior is not -- and frankly the whole subject is a real head-scratcher, because this is a society consisting almost exclusively of content producers! You'd think there'd be a general consensus of respect for the rights of content producers. And for the most part (the extremely most part, to judge by our posts in history) there is. It is very infrequent that we have someone coming on here and either blatantly attempting to engage in piracy, or advocating the same. And when they do, it's squelched immediately as soon as a moderator discovers it.

why compare a Dell XPS 1710 with an Apple MacBook pro?

Not even in the same category of machines.

The Dell blows away the Mac by a long distance. Plus, the top configuration has a 512MB Nvidia Geforce 7950 GTX video Card -- does any one here know what such a card can do?

I am so tired of Mac apologists who claim macs are better at everything.

Reality is PCs give you so much more for much less money and top end macs have yet to reach what top-end PCs can do. Support and choice of software for PCs is overwhelming... and for most power-hungry, heavy duty applications from CATIA engineering to 3D modelling, video editing and sfx compositing with, say Discreet non-turnkey software like TOXIC, etc... on to CAD Architectural drawing, etc... PCs running Windows or Linux is the only viable way to go.

Apple does have some great software: FCP, Shake, Pro Tools, Logic... but then what? For each of these great packages, PCs have many better alternatives.

The XPS 1710 is better suited for gamers though. Better here would be a Dell Precision M90,

which is an absolute beast as it has a 512MB Quadro FX 3500 OpenGL video card among other top of the line specs. The machine is workstation-class, which means it has been ISV-certified by software vendors to run their programs optimally, and is not to be confused with consumer-grade machines.

At $1600 base price, it's a bargain. Optimal configuration can reach upwards of $6000 though.

If you want a sleeker design, go with the HP nw9440 mobile workstation which, depending on configuration, has equivalent specs as above.

Either way, you can't really go wrong.

Is that an oxymoron?

Youll find that most of us mac users here are using that software listed or at least some of it. But to say PCs have many "better alternatives" is a bit odd. At present I cant confiigure a dell on line to have more than 4gb ram - i can get the mac pro with 16. But as we are a filmaking forum, I usually say to people to test NLE's before they make a purchase choice. Just so happens that I enjoy using FCS much more than the other apps available and so be it.

And then "I am so tired of Mac apologists who claim macs are better at everything." But arent you doing the same?

PCs do provide a multitude of choices when it comes to software.

And you may "only" be able to configure a Dell with 4GB of software, but a Dell Precision 690 is configured for up to 64GB or RAM, which blows MACs right out of the water -- not even the same ballpark.

Add to that 2 X768MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro FX4600 graphic cards in an SLI config and you got yourself a superb system with a base configuration price of only $1429.

Hard to beat.

No wonder macs are still only such a marginal percentage (6% I believe) of the computer sales market worldwide.

Dont forget mac use a PC CPU

No they use an x86 CPU, rather than a RISC (which is the old power pc architecture).

PC stands for personal computer.

Macs are Personal Computers; for some reason PC is used to indicate windows. Probably because the marketshare is heavily in windows' favor.

IBM coined the tern "Personal Computer" and and typically Macs have run on non-IBM compatible hardware like the PowerPc...and thus, no association to IBM nor the term "PC"

I want a 17" MBP, but I've been holding out.

Apple, get off your duffs and implement that Centrino Pro already, and allow me to use 2 memory modules of 2GB so I can have an even 4GB. New GPU would be nice also, but take care of the first two.

I find that Mac fanatics will rush to Apple's defense and say that it takes time to implement new processors -- not really. It's not like the processor hasn't been in R&D for at least a year, tested for OSX, Windows XP and Vista!

There's no, no, no excuse for Apple not to implement the processor off the bat.

Great. More iPhone hooplah. Give me Leopard and a new MBP already!

I think you misused some technical terms. As someone who works with computers, those specs make no sense to me. 4GB of software? 64GB of RAM? I was pretty sure Windows XP only effeciently utilized 1GB. Vista can go up to something like 18GB -- I think that was the original number put out by Microsoft, anyway...
