MacBook Pro? Or....

Or get the best of both worlds - get a MacBook Pro with all it's OSX goodies and FCP. Then use Bootcamp to run Vegas on XP. Both programs are great for the HD110. You'll never wonder anymore, especially with FCP6 and Vegas 64-bit looming ahead.

That’s the answer I was going to say

The fact that you can run Windows and OSX on the same computer is huge.

Excellent! I didn't even think of that!

You can also get the 15" with the same specs, if you want a smaller setup. I was gonna suggest to check it out in person at an Apple store before you buy it. (in case you order it online) It's always a good idea to check out new products you are going to buy, if you can.

yeah i am going to probably play with it a bit at the apple store before i buy it, but i'm pretty sure its what i am going to get.. thanks for all your help fellas/ladies..

I must be one of the few switchers from Mac to PC. I've always only owned Macs and loved them. I find lately that the build quality is lacking. I don't want a notebook that runs at 6,000 degrees and is paper thin! I'll take an extra half inch in thickness to have something useable.

I've had to buy a Dell M90 recently (great laptop) and as a back up I bought a gamer's PC tower. I can't believe that I've bought 2 PCs in a row. Am I the only one who isn't impressed by Apple lately? I'm not trying to start something here. I've not said anything for a long time now. But these stupid PCs work pretty well and are a lot cheaper.

By the way, I use Premiere (with Cineform RAW and Prospect 2K) and will be upgrading to the full CS3 suite....... I THINK! Man, part of me really wants to go back to Mac and FC Pro!

</nonsense rant>

DELL M1710 user/editor here running PPro 2.0 and CS3 beta on Vista with no issues.

Don't forget if you switch to Mac you also have to add in all the additional software costs + time spent learning a new NLE & OS which you may not even like.

This is very important. When I switched to Mac initially i lost some money due to "time to learn"

Id at least go to the store and see if you can demo FCS. Not trying to put you off either, Im a FCS user. But from a personal pespective you should see what fiits you best.

If you asked me what I like of course I will say FCS, but it does fit me best, and because it does, my editing has improved 10 fold - and I am no editor beleive me, but now I can get the job done and Im doing it much faster.

Finally, remember its not the NLE that makes the editor, but Im telling you now if you can get something that just fits you better it does make a difference. For some (me included) thats FCS and for others its something else.

One of the big pluses to this particular DVXuser community are there a hell of a lot of FC users here and many offer great advice in the NLE forums (Vegas isnt far behind).

Only one reason to get a mac: Final Cut Studio.

Without that software, the most of would be saving money on a cheaper, BETTER PC setup. S'a damned shame.

He doesn't really have to keep in mind the cost of switching platforms, because he can run Bootcamp 2 and Adobe. He DOES get the best of both worlds, but at a cost.

That MacBook is going to be expensive as hell to upgrade. Final Cut Studio 2 is going to be expensive.

It's just an overall more-expensive approach to the problem. Then again, you are basically buying two laptops. =)

So you like the M1710? How is it? Heavy? I heard it was a great desktop replacement, but when it came to portability it fell through (not a huge deal). I have never owned a Mac, so yeah i'm sure that making this switch is going to be hard, BUT at least i can still run windows when i feel like on the MacBook Pro. Thats one of the main reasons i am so quik to switch to Mac, because the MBP has the bootcamp.

Switching over isn't hard at all, as long as you are somewhat computer savy. I know of tons of people who barely use computers who use both Macs and PC's no problem. I think probably the weirdest thing or "hardest" thing is going from a 2 button mouse to a one button mouse. But they new macs have 2 buttons now anyways, and you can always buy a two button mouse. (I did the same time I bougth my G5)
But if you are getting a laptop, then it doesn't matter at all anyways.

It's great and just as heavy as any other 17" laptop. Portability is fine as it even comes with it's own backpack which is pretty solid and roomy for carrying around all your gear.

I think the issues you're hearing about with regards to portability are from people comparing a 13" or 15" Macbook to a 17" Dell.

17" whatever is going to be a little bigger no matter what platform but the bigger screen really comes in handy if you're an editor.

If you got the time and the extra cash to make the switch, then by all means. Just make sure you try it out and know it's right for you before you buy.

well.. I went to the Apple store in SF today, and... idk i guess i'm not really feelin the MBP for some reason.. Its nice and all, but.. idk maybe i'm just not a Mac person? it just didn't feel right. idk w/e i need a new notebook buy this saturday so i'm just gonna order myself a M1710 from Dell, can't go wrong with that right? so its done, thanks for all your help fellas/ladies.

It's more than two pounds heavier than a 17'' macbook pro, but if you're using it mostly as a desktop replacement it should be fine. For portability I'd look elsewhere. The price/performance ratio is much better on dells than on macs, though, and the latest generation of macs is a bit behind in terms of graphics cards, etc.

Seems so on laptops, but I just configured a dell to the same specs as my mac pro - actually couldnt because I have 8gb ram in my mac pro and the dell would only let me go to 4gb, basically everything else the same - video card options are different - I have the 512mb x1900 and the dell has a quadro fx f4350.

At the end of the day the mac pros was $240 more, now if you adjust to add another 4gb of ram and match the gfx cards a little more evenly youd end up about $200 less expense with a mac pro.

You don't have to convince me. While pcs trump macs for the money in terms of hardware, in terms of user experience I think a mac is an infinitely better deal. I have bootcamp installed on my MBP and the only time I use Windows is for 3D Studio Max...and Freecell.

But for someone who's operating system agnostic and just looking for the fastest machine, you can't do much better than a Dell. I have a 2405 and adore it; Dell's hardware is okay quality and very affordable. Nice machine, by the way...consider me jealous.

If you get a mac it's main asset is the operating system, get familar with OSX instead of dual booting and editing on windows.
