Mac Users: Stop Deleting The Contents Directory

In addition to the empty directories, did you place a LASTCLIP.TXT file back onto the card, and if so, what did it contain?

Oops, forgot to mention that. Yes, I did copy the lastclip.txt file, totally unaltered from when I shot the first 10 second clip. The camera was able to properly name the new files created (despite the directory error), and updated the lastclip.txt file with the appropriate new info once I was done.

If you placed empty directory structures and a non-empty LASTCLIP.TXT file on the card, that may have been what upset the camera.

The LASTCLIP.TXT file is used for spanning clips, and if the most recent file that was recorded doesn't exist, that may elicit the error message. I would try formatting a card in the camera, grab the LASTCLIP.TXT file from the card, and repeat your test.

Looks like you were 100% right! I redid the test this time with these steps:

1) Formatted the card in camera

2) Copied the CONTENTS directory and untouched LASTCLIP.txt file to my hard drive

3) Went back into camera mode, and filmed a clip

4) Changed to MCR mode, and offloaded everything to the hard drive

5) Changed the permissions of the CONTENTS directory and LASTCLIP.txt to allow them to be altered.

6) Deleted everything from the P2 card

7) Copied the CONTENTS directory and the LASTCLIP.txt file that I had saved from the freshly formatted card

8) Turned the camera off, then on again to re-enter camera mode

9) The camera recognized the card with no errors, and I was able to record a clip. To verify, I went to MCR mode and played it back, and then into USB device mode and offloaded the card. Everything continued to work without errors!

So it would seem that there is in fact a way to offload using GNU/Linux and the camera's built-in USB Device mode, even with the newest firmware.

I hope this info helps someone.

Again, thanks THoff for the help!

Excellent -- I love it when a hunch (a.k.a. WAG or "Wild A** Guess") pans out! Cheers!
