Mac suddenly not recognizing the HVX200

I'm in a real bind. I've got a bunch of tapes to capture for a gig, and all of the sudden my editor's iMac stopped recognizing the HVX200. I brought over my MacBook Pro and it's not working either. Tried another cable, not working.

The port on the camera seems to be undamaged and making a solid connection. He had already captured four of the 12 tapes when it locked up and stopped reading the camera. Is there any setting that could have been changed on the camera that would prevent it from being recognized by the Macs?

Please help, our deadline's rapidly approaching and we've already lost three days to this problem.

Thanks!

if you want the quickest fix, go down to target, best buy, wal mart, whatever, and buy a dv cam. you shouldn't be burning up the heads on your hvx doing captures anyways.

Sounds like yet another case of blowing up a firewire port. If you can, get another DV camera and connect your HVX to it, to see if your port's working. But if you've tried it on twi different macs with two different cables, then I'd say your port's probably fried.

Macs are notorious for blowing up firewire ports because Macs use six-pin firewire ports, and those have power supplied. Most manufacturers now recommend turning off both the camera and the computer before plugging in or unplugging via firewire. The issue doesn't happen on Windows laptops because they usually have 4-pin (unpowered) firewire ports, but it can happen on Windows desktops when the desktop has a six-pin. It's not a Mac issue per se, but it happens more frequently to Mac users because Macs use the six-pin firewire port.

In the future, never hot-plug or hot-swap a 4-to-6 firewire cable. It blows up 4-pin firewire ports.

Barry,

If it is a blown port is that covered under warranty? I would have to act quick because I this was when I ordered the camera last year.

If not covered, where would I go to get that repaired? I just got HD Monitor Pro and was looking forward to trying it out, since the Macbook's always on set to dump cards anyway.

Thanks!

I don't think that's a warranty item, but you can ask 'em. You'd have to send it to a Panasonic service center; maybe ask Spec-Comm (they're an authorized repair facility and may be able to advise you best).

Help me understand the physics here. Isn't the power carried on the 2 wires that are not part of the 4 wires on the 4 wire side? If so, is this a capacitance issue? How are the port wires wired in a 4-6 port cable?
