Mac Pro 3k = hackintosh 1.2k + GH1 1.6k

apple is constantly over pricing all of their computers. you can get better quality computers for cheaper from other companies. of course building your own computer would be extremely cheaper. but it takes some sort of skill. i dont know why people are always going for mac osx when people can turn to windows. i know that windows has some reliability issues but if you can get a decent computer there are rarely any problems.

That's because Mac OS is just plain a better operating system. Look at just about any professional unbiased review comparing Mac OS to Windows. The results are always the same. I don't mean this to be a Mac vs. PC argument, but that's how it is.

There is zero reason why you would want to do this. If GH1 will be your primary camera, your probably not working for normal rate jobs and a new Imac, mac book pro or hell even the new mini would do everything you need. If you are doing real jobs and getting the at least bare bones average of $500/day for what you do... well time is money and to me anything that takes my time i look at as rate gone out the window and I GUARANTEE you will waste more than 6 days of your life over the course of owning a Hackintosh trying to get it work properly each and every time new updates come out, video cards, etc.

Hobbist - Mac Pro completely unnecessary
Pro - Pays for itself in under 2 weeks of work, will be useable for the next 5 years.

Well said.

Wow thanks for everyone giving there input. I want to make it clear that I would not be building the Hackintosh but buying it prebuild on craigslist.

I run an iPhone development business in LA and I have bought 2 macs in the past month. This new mac won't be for work but for my side projects that I work on regarding video. This is a youtube video for one of the computers for sale http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xOYB-fYcZM.
The one I am looking at is $1200 but they have faster like below for more money. But I don't really need that for a hobby computer. Maybe if I was editing Red footage.
NEW MAC PRO CLONE / 3.8 GHz Core i7 NEHALEM / 12 GB RAM / GTS 250 - $2300

I think I have made my decision to go with the hackintosh but I will wait for snow leopard to come out because it is so close to being released. If the hackintosh still works with that new OS then I think I will go that route.

well this has been interesting.

I didnt think you wanted to build. I advised against it cause I thought
they were referring to the software hack : OSX project I think its called.

I mean its a hassle enough to get the hardware running, then to try and
do that too- LOL. doesnt look like anyone here is running that anyway.

Anyone- Which is the best approach here for MULTI BOOT you think:

windows 7 + snow leoapard? { also, I dont really want to run a raid }

Complaints? Those are the only native editing systems that can edit ACHD. And edius.

from posts i read,

the pro users are really upset with vegas 9 right now.

And CS4 isnt much better. about all that runs well is AE, apparently.

I kind of liked CS3, and thought adobe was finally getting it together. But
im afraid to upgrade!

forget Edius, its just too clunky and they dont listen to users at all!

But you just did.

Nik, at 3.8GHz, that's definitely an overclocked CPU. Not sure if the guy will have properly set it up to give it that big a boost; at $1200, there's a good chance it's the i7 920, which has a stock clock of just 2.66 GHz.

Yep but both of those OS's are just about to come out so they'll be presumably a bit buggy.

Also, I'd run each OS on a different HD... pretty sure you can do this and I don't think that OSX and Windows use the same file format system. (NTFS vs FAT I believe... actually not exactly sure :P )

They're claiming 3.8GHz? wtf... I'd be weary of this company. That's a pretty steep overclock to sell to a consumer who probably knows very little of overclocking/what to do if something goes wrong.

okay different hardrives.

but is there a LINK to a good system that will do this? I dont mind building
if its a tested design. I dont want to **** with conflicts though.

Or which VENDOR has a prebuilt system, that does this?

I want i7, maximum power, and ram.

I understand windows 7 is pretty well the best microsoft yet, and should
run good from the start.

thanks!

There's a Hackintosh with a core i7 for $1500. It certainly looks nice. Do your research though, I have very little expertise when it comes to this stuff. Again, check out my previous posts, where I link to Anandtech and some Hackintosh related threads. It's a great great computer forum with lots of help to be found and provided

edit: oh yea stick with the i7 920, 920 denoting a 2.66ghz clockspeed. you can get a 2.93ghz chip but it's $350 more (at least on the psystar site) and completely not worth that price at all.

Oh okay thanks. yeah i just looked at psystar. I know that site. they
went BANKRUPT IN JUNE ! lol.

I guess there okay to order now.

I wonder could CUSTOMERS of theirs be prosecuted if apple is successful suing them?

heres the dual boot

http://store.psystar.com/dualboot.html

dont know how SMOOTH they have it configured though. plus,

you probably would have to buy BOTH operating systems from them
for this system.

You can always wait a bit; i5s and new i7s on the 1156 socket is coming out not too soon and could well offer equal performance at the same price as the i7 920.

Bootcamp (comes with Mac OS X Leopard) will let you boot between Mac and Windows. Not sure if bootcamp will work with a hackintosh, but if not there might be other solutions.

Mac uses HPFS, and is called Mac OS Extended (normal, case-sensitive, and journaled options available) in Mac OS. Mac OS can read and right FAT32 drives, but can only read NTFS drives. I think there's a utility you can install to allow writing to NTFS drives.

Windows: you'll probably use NTFS, but FAT32 is an option. I believe there's software you can install in Windows to allow it to read and write HPFS.

OC(over clocking) is not that scary when it comes to certain brand Intel's and mobo's. Certain chips run EXTREMELY cool. For instance, I have a 1.8ghz Intel allendale OC'd to 3.04ghz. Huge stretch, but the chip, on stock fan no less, runs at 48c idle. That's why I put a Mac OS on another HDD, just to try it out. I work with Macs all day at work and play around with them at home, but I mainly operate through Windows. But it gave me the option to work between the two without having to buy a sub $2000 machine to do it. Sorry, their operating system isn't THAT great.

When it comes to you building/buying a hackintosh, put your OS's on different HD's. It's simpler and easier to boot between the two. No need for additional software in bios to boot up OS's.

What are you referring to? AVCHD footage? Editing native AVCHD footage is a breeze. AE is no different than Premiere in that respect. You're probably hearing all the complaints about removing pulldown. Nothing really besides 3rd party applications take care of that. Secondly, if you're editing on Final Cut, you have to take all you existing footage and convert it to ProRes just to edit. Not fun from what I've heard. CS4 is a definitely worth upgrade. Read some people's experience with AVCHD on the forums.

Yeah I think when I get the hackintosh I will also get windows 7 on a separate hardrive. I don't have any functioning windows machines so it will be good to have one. Also the machine I am referencing for $1150 has

Specs:
- Intel Q9400 3.2 GHz Core 2 Quad Processor (4 cores! Overclocked to 3.2 Ghz each!)
- 4 GB Dual Channel RAM (expandable up to 16 GB)
- 750 GB 7200.11 RPM Western Digital Caviar Black SATA Hard Drive (add in another hard drive with Windows Vista for $120 extra)
- 22X Dual Layer SuperDrive
- 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 GeForce 9600 GT Video Card w/ Dual DVI Outputs
- 10 USB Ports
- 2 Firewire 400 Ports
- 2 eSATA Ports
- 6 Available SATA ports (for expansion)
- 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports
In an Antec Three Hundred case (pic below), with a 680 Watt Power Supply.

This just smacks of a bad idea. You don't need a top of the line machine for video editing...buy the cheapest 13" Macbook Pro.

You can log and transfer your footage to AIC, edit it, and relog and reconnect to ProRes. I've been editing this stuff with no problems on mid-range white macbook and iMacs from years ago.

Hackintosh you're dealing with a lack of driver support, potentially unstable platform, and apple trying to break your computer everytime they release a software update. Hackintosh works great for netbooks and other simple machines but I would not use it for a high end editing computer.

Have you dealt with a hackintosh? Probably not because you're listing a plethora of things that aren't true. I get updates just like any Joe who bought a Mac and have driver support just like Joe who bought a Mac. Hackintosh's do not work great for netbooks, or at all. I have to see if anyone is even bothering with netbook hackintosh's. due to the atom intel chips and mobo's not being compatible.
