How stable is final cut pro anyway?
All I read is unhappy complaints about vegas 9 AND CS4.
Its like were running out of options!
Complaints? Those are the only native editing systems that can edit ACHD. And edius.

apple is constantly over pricing all of their computers. you can get better quality computers for cheaper from other companies. of course building your own computer would be extremely cheaper. but it takes some sort of skill. i dont know why people are always going for mac osx when people can turn to windows. i know that windows has some reliability issues but if you can get a decent computer there are rarely any problems.
There is zero reason why you would want to do this. If GH1 will be your primary camera, your probably not working for normal rate jobs and a new Imac, mac book pro or hell even the new mini would do everything you need. If you are doing real jobs and getting the at least bare bones average of $500/day for what you do... well time is money and to me anything that takes my time i look at as rate gone out the window and I GUARANTEE you will waste more than 6 days of your life over the course of owning a Hackintosh trying to get it work properly each and every time new updates come out, video cards, etc.
Hobbist - Mac Pro completely unnecessary
Pro - Pays for itself in under 2 weeks of work, will be useable for the next 5 years.

But you just did. That's because Mac OS is just plain a better operating system. Look at just about any professional unbiased review comparing Mac OS to Windows. The results are always the same. I don't mean this to be a Mac vs. PC argument, but that's how it is.
Nik, at 3.8GHz, that's definitely an overclocked CPU. Not sure if the guy will have properly set it up to give it that big a boost; at $1200, there's a good chance it's the i7 920, which has a stock clock of just 2.66 GHz.Wow thanks for everyone giving there input. I want to make it clear that I would not be building the Hackintosh but buying it prebuild on craigslist.
I run an iPhone development business in LA and I have bought 2 macs in the past month. This new mac won't be for work but for my side projects that I work on regarding video. This is a youtube video for one of the computers for sale http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xOYB-fYcZM.
The one I am looking at is $1200 but they have faster like below for more money. But I don't really need that for a hobby computer. Maybe if I was editing Red footage.
NEW MAC PRO CLONE / 3.8 GHz Core i7 NEHALEM / 12 GB RAM / GTS 250 - $2300
I think I have made my decision to go with the hackintosh but I will wait for snow leopard to come out because it is so close to being released. If the hackintosh still works with that new OS then I think I will go that route.
well this has been interesting.
I didnt think you wanted to build. I advised against it cause I thought
they were referring to the software hack : OSX project I think its called.
I mean its a hassle enough to get the hardware running, then to try and
do that too- LOL. doesnt look like anyone here is running that anyway.

Anyone- Which is the best approach here for MULTI BOOT you think:
windows 7 + snow leoapard? { also, I dont really want to run a raid }

...
Yep but both of those OS's are just about to come out so they'll be presumably a bit buggy.
Also, I'd run each OS on a different HD... pretty sure you can do this and I don't think that OSX and Windows use the same file format system. (NTFS vs FAT I believe)
From a link a poster above provided:

There's a Hackintosh with a core i7 for $1500. It certainly looks nice. Do your research though, I have very little expertise when it comes to this stuff. Again, check out my previous posts, where I link to Anandtech and some Hackintosh related threads. It's a great great computer forum with lots of help to be found and provided
edit: oh yea stick with the i7 920, 920 denoting a 2.66ghz clockspeed. you can get a 2.93ghz chip but it's $350 more (at least on the psystar site) and completely not worth that price at all.

from posts i read,
the pro users are really upset with vegas 9 right now.
And CS4 isnt much better. about all that runs well is AE, apparently.
I kind of liked CS3, and thought adobe was finally getting it together. But
im afraid to upgrade!
forget Edius, its just too clunky and they dont listen to users at all!
This just smacks of a bad idea. You don't need a top of the line machine for video editing...buy the cheapest 13" Macbook Pro.
You can log and transfer your footage to AIC, edit it, and relog and reconnect to ProRes. I've been editing this stuff with no problems on mid-range white macbook and iMacs from years ago.
Hackintosh you're dealing with a lack of driver support, potentially unstable platform, and apple trying to break your computer everytime they release a software update. Hackintosh works great for netbooks and other simple machines but I would not use it for a high end editing computer.
